They are very much a team. All that so called rivalry and fights are also a cheeky way to remain in limelight.
They have been clever enough to make use of trends set by Amitabh to expand stardom (doing stage shows, engaging with fans and media, Promoting self and films, building connections with other dignatories and going beyond movies). This clubbing as a trinity helped keep stars like Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Akshay, Ajay and later Hrithik away. Success of every other actor was treated as anomaly and era was called only Khan era.
I agree peddling self as trinity helped cover each others' flaws.
I disagree that newcomers need to be given time. Salman gave massive hits like MPK and HAHK so early in his career. SRK has been consistent since debut. Aamir's debut shifted focus to more youthful cinema. They made older stars seem irrelevant in changing times. Today's newcomers lack that. They are too busy copying older stars.
Nobody needs to be given 20 years to prove themselves. 3 or 4 years at most. Even Amitabh made all previous stars look irrelevant after initial struggle.
(Hrithik has better filmography and hits but he has less connect. He is slotted in those distant superhero and historical character image. You need to connect with ordinary people to be superstar.)
