Rajini had flops as well. Kuselan(Billu barber Tamil version) flopped badly and he had to cover the loss of distributors. kochadiyaan was always going to be a makeshift project as they had to cancel Rana due to his poor health.

One can't compare this with Aishwarya's Robot. She had a prominent role in the movie and was there from the beginning till the final scene. She was even given great importance in the trailers compared to most of Rajni's previous heroines who were more like non-entities. Deepika was just like that, a non-entity.

She added nothing - she isn't a big star for the exclusive South Indian movie watching audience. It was all about Rajni. It was in the north that she could've made a difference. But the less than one crore opening says it all.

And you'd be kidding yourself if you think Robot did nothing for Aishwarya - the South audience hadn't seen her for over ten years on the big screen after Kandukondain Kandukondain. She got good exposure thanks to this film and could sustain her popularity further. Raavanan, which released the same year, helped too. And in Hindi too, Robot did the best business for a dubbed film.
