Rhea Pillai's ongoing tussle with Leander Paes over the custody of their eight-yearold daughter Aiyana is far from over. The socialite, who has been in a relationship with the tennis ace for nearly a decade, is getting ready to file her petition in court. Last week, when Rhea allegedly found herself locked out of her own home, she felt completely helpless. It was at this juncture that her close friend Gauri Khan stepped in to help. Rhea admitted to us that had Gauri not come, she may never have found her voice in public. Or for that matter, with the cops. After lodging a complaint at the Bandra police station, Mrs Shah Rukh Khan went home with her and made sure she was ensconced safely. Says Rhea, "I called up my friend Kajal (Anand), who contacted another mutual close friend Avanti. Both of them live in town and it would have taken them at least 45 minutes to reach me. Gauri said she is coming right away and was at the police station, along with her bodyguards, within five minutes. Later, when she walked into the house, Leander got a little nervous because he is very particular about his image. He got affected because Gauri would see what is going on in the house."

The personal battle between Leander Paes and Rhea Pillai got worse on Thursday night when Rhea returned home, to allegedly find herself locked out. Sitting in her daughter's room, dressed in her night suit, Rhea broke down intermittently as she spoke about the "ordeal" of living with the tennis player. Some of her personal belongings could be seen stacked in cardboard boxes, in the drawing room of her Carter Road apartment in Bandra.

Rhea accused Leander of cheating on her. She said, "Our relationship did not work out the way I wanted it to. He was very happy when I conceived, but post that, his behaviour changed dramatically. He must have felt, 'Where can she go now?' He would not show up for many days. Even while going on professional tours, no phone numbers were given to me. And then, women's clothing started coming out of his suitcases."

Rhea says when their daughter turned a little over seven, she told Leander that she wanted to separate. "I decided to walk out of his immediate space. I shifted to the other side of the apartment and he could not take out his anger on me. He then started venting out his anger at my daughter, who used to stay with him at night at that point of time," she says. Rhea says Leander and she have not had any kind of relationship since Aiyana was conceived. "He has not even held my hand since then. Then I decided to live my life because he was living his life. The day I decided to do so, he didn't like it. If I dress up, I am encouraging men to look at me and if I don't, I am lazy," she says. Leander was unavailable for comment till the time of going to press.

The other day, while reading Malavika's column, i was wondering kaun hai. Now i know she was referring to Rhea's buddies... Gauri, Putlu, etc...

On court heat and dust

And after we carried an item about Rhea Pillai's high-profile friends springing to her defence post her media dissing by Leander Paes, we were sent feelers from the tennis champs' well-wishers. Did we know that Paes was one of the truly nicest guys in town? Had we been unaware of not only Pillai's, but also the materialistic and hedonistic ways of the gang she moved with? Did we really believe that the usually reserved and well-brought-up Paes would ever resort to such hostility, if he were not very very disillusioned with his live-in partner? And so on.

To which we say: We wrote about Pillai's friends defending her and Leander's prior favourable pronouncements in the press without taking sides. We have been too long in the business to not know that in personal battles like this, there are always two sides of the story, and the saddest thing is actually that both sides have a point. Observers, friends, well-wishers can only allow the heat and dust to settle and tempers to cool, so that further collateral damage to the young and innocent is prevented.

It's called private life' for a reason. It is not supposed to be for public consumption. Because while people may express faux sympathy for you, once your back is turned they will be pointing and laughing. Can't these adults think about their kids? Stop making a drama out of your private lives.
