aaanyways, shocked to see just 13 pages out here and almost nobody who has actually watched it themselves... saw some negative reviews and a LOT of positives...many wrong assumptions and biased praises 😆

I watched the movie today - after a very long wait...and i loved it!!

Before i tell you all about it, let me warn you about probable tiny spoilers and clarify that i had read the book before watching the movie.

For those who have read the book and love bollywood, they would be overjoyed watching this cz the casting, cinematography, locations, costume is spot on!

Aalia has done an amazing job in the movie! she is so natural, minimal make up...and omg her clothes! not only are they beautiful but she makes it look better! Her small cute expressions, the way she cried...it was all Ananya all through.. (Seeing all this i felt like cursing the SOTY makers for making her look like a plastic model when she can look so beautiful without it!)

Arjun was perfect for the role... and you can see that in some scenes he plays himself! I dont know why some reviews have said that theres been a miscast, i thought he was rather good! :D

The parents!! Godd they are ditto how i imagined them while reading the book...ananya's tamilian parents...revathy was superb and her father perfect! 👏 The punjabi mother was SO real and ronit roy the BEST! I dint know he could act so well!! :o

Ohh btww that mickey mouse underwear scene which was released online was not there in the movie...but just the marriage scene was shot beautifully...with voiceover and bg music.. The Punjabi madness before the wedding and breakfast confusions were also cut out...so were the krishh's hostel in chennai scene and scenes with his boss..

But all this you will not realise during the movie...cz its got a good flow and what there has been wonderfully done!

I would happily give it 4.5 stars :D

Thank you for this review. Nice to hear a real person review than critics 🤔

Two States Hindi Movie Reviews

Ratings:4.5/5 Review By: Taran Adarsh Site:Bollywood Hungama
2 STATES is based on Chetan Bhagat's bestseller '2 States: The Story Of My Marriage' Director Abhishek Varman stays faithful to Chetan Bhagat's bestseller, adapting it delightfully on the big screen. The diverse cultures, the discomfort and the pressures when people talk of inter-caste liaison, the unyielding love and the resolve to win the parents' trust... each and every aspect -- the emotions included -- are captured meticulously by the storyteller On the whole, 2 STATES is one of the finest movies to come out of the Hindi film industry of late. This is one of those rare Hindi movies that commands a repeat viewing. Strongly recommended!

All in all, the second half of the drama definitely scores over the first half and completely entertains the audience. The look and feel of the film is very city-centric which is why it would appeal more to the audience in the big cities and those frequenting multiplexes. On the whole, 2 States is an entertaining love story which will definitely work at the box-office - more in the cities and with the multiplex audience. The film's distributors and exhibitors will all make decent profits in the film.

The unabashed shallowness of a Chetan Bhagat book meets the inane glitter of a Karan Johar-Sajid Nadiadwala production in 2 States. The result is the creation of a third state - the state of overpowering indolence. If the inordinate length of 2 States isn't bad enough, its soporific tempo certainly is. 2 States is a cross-culture love story that strives to be sweet, funny and emotionally wrenching all at once. It is occasionally funny and sweet in parts all right, but the family drama at the film's core has a severely stultified feel.2 States is good for a one-time watch.

2 States' romantic angle is a little difficult to connect given the way it is moved along in such a hurry in order to incorporate everything, but the family side of the bargain is truly touching. I ended up crying at least thrice in the film. Nevertheless, there's nothing that should keep you from watching 2 States. If you're as desi as I am and get senti about maa, there's no way you won't run home after watching this film and give your mother a big hug.

2 States is a happy film (with measured anguish). Romance in cross-cultural or even cross-border situations isn't new to Bollywood. What makes 2 States work is the simple narrative told humorously. Adapted as it is, from one of author Chetan Bhagat's best-selling works, the film, just like the book before it, is light-hearted. Chetan's funny one-liners and life-view are studiously borrowed by the director for his screen outing. And though there is a sense of deja-vu, for those who have read the book, the movie still manages to charm and surprise.

The film sets out to be a solid, emotionally satisfying rom com, and goes well for a bit but then turns into a too-stretched-out jhagda' between the two sets of North-South parents. And the romance gets short shrift. The smooth, engaging first half descends, post-interval, into mopey melodrama, and I got impatient waiting for the inevitable resolution. Get the outdated folks out of the way, make it crisper, and show us what Krish and Ananya did next. I'm waiting.

The film is based on Chetan Bhagat's novel 2 States. In the story, Chetan Bhagat has successfully shown the forever prevailing differences over caste and religion. The film also reflects upon the classic issue of a youngster-the dilemma over choice of career and parental expectations. 2 States can be a good mirror for parents to understand their children. So take along your parents and enjoy the film.

The best thing about Two States is that it is fresh -- in the casting, the approach, and the language. It's the kind of romcom that makes you go 'hmmm' rather than 'awww.' The language spoken by all the characters is no different from one used by everyday people, and it's not like actors saying lines. From the make-out scenes to the fights between the couple, it's all very life-like and non-filmi. The first half is light and breezy and the second dramatic and emotional, perhaps a better balance would have helped the post interval portion which seems heavy. Watch it with friends.

Designed as an autobiographical tale of North Indian author Chetan Bhagat's love story with his Tamilian wife, this film is a bafflingly superficial adaptation of a book that should have remained a book. One of the less dated facts this film gets right is that a writer often gets inspired by pain. 'Two States', the book, was a result of momentary heartbreak too. As is this review.

Dharma's trademark visual style and a few moments of comedy aside, 2 States is mostly a chore and periodically infuriating. The filmmakers had a chance to go against all odds and make a classic and they blew it. Critical appreciation might not be the film's target anyway, because it's been marketed well enough to make a truckload of money.

With 2 States', both Varman and writer Bhagat himself, have proven that a good film in Bollywood does not have to be loud and slapstick with stellar music and A-list stars, but that script and good direction is still king at the movies. For the duo, the foot tapping music and a cast of actors that know their job, are simply the added bonus to watch 2 States' in a happy state of mind.

2 States is a feel good, romantic comedy which scores for being earthly and grounded. It is never too candyfloss but even with a known, loved and inevitable climax, Abhishek Varman spins an engaging story. Alia and Arjun's unfeigned and spunky chemistry is winsome but mostly the film is watchable because of its ability to portray known dynamics of culture divide without many glitches. It is easy, breezy and good fun!

2 States' review: It's a long, indulgent film that wears you out

Rajeev Masand,CNN-IBN

Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt

Director: Abhishek Varman

Madrasis are dark, Punjabis are cash-obsessed, and never the twain shall meet. Those familiar prejudices make for a legitimate movie pitch, but '2 States', directed by first-timer Abhishek Varman, is a frustrating case of a promising premise that doesn't fully fructify into a compelling film.

Not surprisingly, it's Alia Bhatt who is the best thing in the film, sliding into the part with complete ease.

Adapted from Chetan Bhagat's autobiographical novel, the film coasts along nicely while focusing on Krish (Arjun Kapoor) and Ananya (Alia Bhatt), who meet on campus at IIM Ahmedabad and quickly fall in love. These portions are handled with appropriate lightness, and the actors share a comfortable chemistry as they sing songs, make gooey eyes at each other across the classroom, and slip under the sheets without much fuss. Speed bumps arise when the couple gets ready to step out of campus and into the real world to pursue jobs and a shared future. A shrewdly orchestrated Graduation Day meet-and-greet between the Malhotras and the Swaminathans goes badly. The Tam-Brahms (Revathy and Shiv Subramaniam) immediately label Krish's Punjabi side "uncultured", even as his overbearing mum (Amrita Singh) goes on and on about their daughter having "phansaoed" her "gora chitta" son.

It's funny at first, the film's politically incorrect humor, because it feels all too familiar. But joke after joke, stereotype after stereotype, what becomes evident is the absence of any real dramatic conflict. You're tired and bored, and you really wish they'd get on with it, when the parents clash again, even after Krish has won over Ananya's family (in a charming scene where he proposes marriage to the whole lot of them), and despite his mother having finally warmed up to his girl (after Ananya saves the day in a sticky dowry-demand situation).

What works are stray moments of wit that the film needed more of. Varman scripts a clever in-joke into a scene where Ananya's mother is coerced by Krish to sing at his office event. In an earlier scene, while describing Ananya's vast but sparsely furnitured home, Krish says: "Jaise kisi Punjabi ke ghar mein chori hui ho. Choron ko sofa acha nahin laga toh chhod gaye."

Despite the stereotypical characterization, Revathy and Shiv Subramaniam nicely fill out their parts, although they have far less to do than Amrita Singh, who is deliciously rude as Krish's obnoxious mum. Ronit Roy as his alcoholic, abusive father appears to have stepped straight out of 'Udaan', but he brings with him a half-baked, unconvincing subplot that comes off as a last-ditch effort to infuse dramatic tension.

Stuck holding up the film's muddled framing device - he narrates the entire story in flashback while on a shrink's couch - Arjun Kapoor gets a few endearing moments when he's playing off his leading lady. For the rest of the film, he wears a puppy dog look, trapped between the girl he loves and the mother who's dead against her. Not surprisingly, it's Alia Bhatt who is the best thing in the film, sliding into the part with complete ease. She's natural and charming without having to try too hard.😛

Parental opposition is one of the oldest conflicts as far as love stories go. Sure, the culture clash here gives us some genuine laughs. But at 2 hours and 30 minutes, this is a long, indulgent film that wears you out. I'm going with two-and-a-half out of five for 2 States. I've never rooted so hard for a couple to get married. If only so I could go home.

Rating: 2.5 / 5

2 STATES Scores Huge Day One

''2 States'' was expected to take box office by storm as we mentioned in our preview 2 days back and in our review yesterday night. But film crossed all expectations and capitalised heavily on Good Fridayadvantage.

Film has recorded occupancy of 45-55% on Friday morning in multiplexes andlater on it rose to 75-80% especially in urban cinemas and multiplexes. Film running to housefull shows in evening and night shows in almost all high end properties.

Film should collect close to 12.75 cr nett on day one and Mumbai alone will contribute in excess of 4.5-5 cr nett. This is phenomenal beginning for the film and now Saturday and Monday will decide trending of the film in long run.

Though single screens were not upto the mark especially outside metros which can hold it back on weekdays. From here on 35 cr nett weekend is possible and decent growth can take it close to 40 cr nett. Overall this is 3rd best opening day after ''Jai Ho'' and ''Gunday''. Superb start!

The Front Row review by Anupama Chopra

Early on in 2 States, Krish, a young IIM-Ahmedabad student played by Arjun Kapoor tells his girlfriend Ananya played by Alia Bhatt, that actually he wants to be a writer. He wants to write good stories. Story mein hero ho na ho,' Krish says, story hero honi chaiye.' The irony is that in 2 States, the story is the weakest link. The film is bolstered by talented actors, gorgeous songs by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, nice styling and production design and a few sparkling moments. And yet it is a slog.

Based on Chetan Bhagat's bestselling novel, 2 States is about a Punjabi boy and a Tamilian girl who love each other but they decide that they will only marry with the approval of their parents. So like Raj in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, they set out to win over each other's families. Ananya's parents are conservative, straight-laced and simple. Krish is saddled with a loving but drama queen mom who insists on calling Ananya's family Madrasis' and an alcoholic father with serious anger management issues. It is, as you can imagine, a real mess.

In the first half, debutant director Abhishek Varman gives us a sweet, unassuming love story. It's slow and in places stilted but there is a warm sense of companionship between Krish and Ananya. Arjun, departing from his earlier violent roles, makes a nicely goofy lover boy but it's Alia who lights up the screen. She is pure magic. Their parents - played by terrific actors like Revathy and Amrita Singh - present interesting oppositions. But I'm tired of watching Ronit Roy be a drunken bully. Can directors please give this talented actor something more than variations of his role in Udaan?

In the second half, 2 States falls apart. It becomes more contrived and unconvincingly twisted. At almost two and a half hours, it's also stretched so thin that by the time Krish and Ananya walk into the sunset, you are long past caring. The story is narrated by Krish to a psychiatrist but at some point the lady disappears. What exactly happened here? I'm still trying to figure it out.

Ultimately 2 States is unwieldy and disappointing. I'm going with two and a half stars.
