Many of Bollywood's much loved playback singers seem to have surprisingly disappeared into the shadows

GAURAV DUBEY

IT IS difficult to have a conversation about ' 90s Bollywood music without mentioning songs such as Tujhe dekha toh yeh jaana sanam, sung by Kumar Sanu, and Pehla Nasha, sung by Udit Narayan. Sanu and Narayan belonged to a breed of playback singers who made ' 90s music what it was: a bag of melodies that sent their respective film's box office collections soaring.

Which brings us to the question: where have these singers gone now? One reason behind their disappearance is the fact that today's music directors prefer working with a new bunch of singers culled from various talent shows.

Not only do these youngsters charge lower fees but their voices can also be worked upon using a slew of audio softwares.

hitlist catches up with these singers to give you the lowdown on what's keeping them busy now...

My God...Alka ji & Udit ji were the king and queen of singing for me. I simply adored their voices.

In addition I loved Kavita ji, Shaan, & Sonu.

What soulful music they all used to sing.

I agree, each singer has their own prime. Sonu and Shaan's era was the best and gave us some of the most amazingest songs ever. Esp. Sonu was a heartthrob in his time, still he is. He's so entertaining and witty, whenever he comes on a award show ..😆 😳

And this Arijit's season (Now) is NOT so cool like those of Sonu and Shaan's ...😕 🥱

That's true. Sometimes the singer can't even sing the song live properly.

kinda sad. all these singers sing beautifully. i agree that there should be new talent brought forward but that doesnt mean kick the old singers to the curb. this is mainly the influence of the production houses because the music directors have to use singers that the production house thinks are good. shreya and sunidhi are the only singers who have been in the indsutry for almost 15 years and are still on top and i hope they stay on top for a while. really miss the melodious songs of the 90's and before.

India should have a strong music industry of their own. Now most musicians are film dependent. Even ARR hasn't broken that trend after Vande Matharam.

YO YO SINGH is terrible ..🤢 You like him? I can't stand him ..He ruined the Chaar Bottle Vodka for me, i was so excited to watch Sunny Leone .. but his singing ''Na mujhko koi roke, na kisine roka' was totally terrible and trash ..🥱
