people on this thread are making a term for something thats not even defined. She's calling out Indians, yet the people on here are trying to frame a term "colorist." What exactly does that even mean?

Nandita Das is calling Indians racists because they can't accept the fact that dark people are treated differently, or unequally in India by Indians.

Indians are Racists. As blunt as it might sound, but she's using the correct term.

^How exactly are you "racist" towards your own race? And treated differently? Not considered "good-looking" isn't being "treated differently". Like I keep saying, people need to know what a word means before throwing it around.
Racism is treating another race as inferior human beings with inferior ability or intellect. Denying them human rights. What the Americans used to do to Blacks or Europeans to their colonies. Its a serious and institutionialised term, Racism. Not liking dark skin within your OWN f**kING race ain't, ain't racism. Whew!

Vik : Some Indians are not too fond of black people that is not the issue we are discussing here. Now that is obviously racist.

Fair Indians v/s dark Indians. Same race.

Racism is a subjective term, in more essence of discrimenatory. Indians with a lighter tone discriminate against the ones with darker tone. "Fair and Lovely" and using such products tend to give a message out to the rest of the citizens that, you won't get married into a wealthy family if you're not lighter. I don't need to dumb this down anymore, but "racism" is a subjective term and it can be used as a convincing term in this case. Even in the article, it clearly points out, "Shah Rukh Khan is saying that to be successful you have to be fair."

p.s. the states are a complete different factor. Racism here is in every other form. I don't think we need to bring the States down to make India look like a better place.

No, but the term she used is clearly stated that racism(discrimination) can exists in same race.

There is a discrimination. Nobody is denying that.

Fair and lovely or Doodh besan for light skin, race is still gonna be Indian by the end of the day.

I am out too. This is a deeply ingrained shit which at least the younger generation seems to be coming out of.

This thread is displaying the scenario faced by our society...no one wants to admit that they're prejudiced, that they discriminate, and that they prefer one race or one color over another. 😆 That exactly mirrors the world we live in. The issues lie in front of us...yet no one wants to acknowledge that they may be at fault...no one wants to be blamed...no one wants to think they may have wronged. Of course Nandita has generalized; she may have chosen better words and a better sentence structure, but I see nothing wrong with her statement. There exists a problem in the Southeast Asian community which must be addressed...the solution is obviously not Fair & Lovely.
