MAY HAVE SPOILERS. BUT NOT REALLY.
What an experience man! From the songs to the performances to the acting to the entertainment quotient...I simply loved the experience of watching Chennai Express with the fambam. I was a bit hesitant taking in the fam with me, knowing how uncomfortable JTHJ got at some parts..but then it was a Rohit Shetty film so I knew ahead of time I would not be dealing with any pretend-to-shut-your-eyes scenes. Anyway, let me start by iterating how I've not been an excited fan of SRK ever since Chak De, which almost seems ages ago. Deepika ka naam kaafi tha to make me skip a film...so this movie basically must have been THAT good to make me fall in love with both of these actors individually and together all over again.
I had from the trailers grasped the story plus I have seen enough South Indian movies (no I can't speak Tamil or Telugu...subtitles zindabaad) to know how the story usually unfolds. The story as usual was very basic, very simple but the treatment from Rohit Shetty is what that made it so entertaining, so funny, so lovable, so endearing. The very first train scene made me reminisce of the old SRK and got me back into the DDJL mode (aww!)..so that was a good sign b/c I could instantly relate to Rahul, the character. Deepika urf Meenamma just lit up the screen from the get go and matched SRK neck to neck with dialogues, action, expressions. SRK and her also looked great together, which is not an easy feat considering the age difference between the two. There were so many funny, poignant, fun sequences that I've lost count, hence I've to watch the movie again to live them again. But from what I recall...the entire singing-songs sequence was freaking of-the-chain. Deepika's witch act along with SRK in it had me in splits. The mandir act was funny, and touching. The titli song, Kashmir main Kanyakumari tu song were my favs; the SRK talli scene honestly had me shit my pants; the halwai scene (Deepika was awesome there) was adorable...the midget scene was so pointless yet so funny. Toward the end, the fighting dragged for me(my mom that it was crucial for some reason lol) but the message was well put and delivered by Rahul.
Oh..and that pachaas saal scene...LMFAO. Oh Meenamma.😆
Do y'all recall Aish from Dhoom2? Yea, I do unfortunately, remember her "Check me out" accent? Deepika's voiceover/accent could have gone that route but she managed it well..so well that not once was I irritated...it fit in perfectly. Of course it made no sense how she would all of a sudden sing in perfect accented Hindi, but that's one blooper I am ready to overlook hehe.
Performance wise, as mentioned before, Deepika fit her part to the T. I as a "non fan" am saying that this girl is here to stay and she will stay for long if she keeps working on her voice modulation. Expression wise, she has improved a lot! I've always been irritated with her so much off screen that I never gave her a chance on screen but this movie has turned me into her fan. I wish her well. She comes off as a very sensible, mature, level headed lady off screen (minus a few RanKat instances...but lets not bring in those two into this haha)...and off late her script choices have worked well. I am only afraid that her pairing may get repetitive with SRK/Ranbir etc...but nonetheless you go girl. What a stunning beauty she is!
SRK...YOU DA MAN! It's only cuz of you I enjoyed a movie which was practically half in Tamil. I obviously related to the movie and scenarios because he was the narrator. Honestly it may take a whole night for me to list all of the scenes that he brilliantly enacted but all Imma say is please do not disappoint your fans aage se with your movie choices. You don't need to do "Artsy" movies, just please, do movies that you would want us to watch. Do entertaining movies and then no one will "underestimate the power of SRK". Haha. His Tamil in bits and pieces was hilarious. The cell phone scene, the midget scene, the talli scene to name a few when he was freaking awesome. Oh, and he looked great too. Them dimples tho.😳
Overall: 4/5
ps- great one to two time repeat value.
GO SRK, DEEPIKA. I still wish OUAT well b/c I like Akki, Sonakshi. I love 3 Idiots too, but records are meant to be broken and I cannot underestimate the power of Chennai Express.
