I have never been intrigued by Rohit Shetty's humor. I liked Golmaal , the first one obviously but even then he managed to bring smiles in his movies at some point or the other. He falls flat on the face this time. Instead of bringing smiles or laughs you just frown in sadness at the deteriorated humor level.
Coming to the point, I went into the movie with no expectations (READ : ZERO) and I thought to myself I might just enjoy it for that reason. It proved me right for the initial 15 minutes were the premise actually made it look okay. But then , To call actors singing songs to convey messages and other goons just watching them, sometimes even joining them is OK for a couple of seconds, but over doing it and doing it again later just irritates.
Chennai Express is the story of Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) who is given a task to take his grandfather's ashes to Rameshwaram. Over high on his new found freedom he tries to dodge the trip and plans a trip to Goa with his friends. Fate plays its game and he ends up with Meena (Deepika Padukone) boarding Chennai Express to some place in south against his will. And then the over-boring cheesiness ensue's.
Somehow in their trip and all running away from the gundaz. Meena gets attracted to Rahul but he is only interested in getting out of the mess somehow. Until very late in the movie we find him confessing his love for her which never made any connection or sense to me.
The film somehow felt like a over-sized trying to be humors version of Chetan Bhagat's 2 states. Bhagat are you listening ? Its your time to sue the producers yet again . But falls flat most of the times. Its not humors nor is its dramatic. And falls in between the hybrid of a badly done comedy and a b grade drama.
Shah Rukh Khan has potential and wasting it on such scummy ways of entertaining is overly ridiculous. While I hated Deepika Padukone's accent in the trailer she wasn't that bad in the movie. Both the actors over-act but I think that's the director's fault at some point or the other. The screenplay is sloppy and the songs felt forced. Neither are the songs good. Except for the melodious 'Titly' track and Jonita Gandhi singing 'Chenaaiii Yaii Yaii Yaii' the music was mediocre.
Final Verdict : Chennai Express is not worth wasting you precious money. It might be tolerable for the SRK fans. But I would recommend you to wait for the Television premier.
