Raja Sen's review

Review: Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express

Kings, they are a-changin.

Six years ago, Deepika Padukone made a celebrated debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in a rollicking entertainer that marvellously spoofed his stardom. At the time, her acting inabilities were cannily masked by the director giving her little to do except look staggering, and by Khan himself, carrying the film on the muscles of his tremendous charisma. Chennai Express is, in a way, full circle for that very lady as she ' enervated by box-office success and increasingly self-aware as an actress ' holds up her end of the film far better, and more consistently than her leading man. She makes an effort; he makes faces. And he's never seemed more at sea.

Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express is a curious beast, a film it seemed would lampoon the South Indian blockbuster ' those films we claim are cheesier and sillier than our own (and then remake with much fanfare) ' but happens to be, in fact, the diametric opposite. This is, in many ways, a full-throated tribute, a Sun TV Strikes Back statement of a film, where a typically cliched example of Southern style masala chugs along normally (and unironically) but is disrupted by a Bollywood actor who has no business there. Khan's Rahul plays the freak while the locals around him look at him dazed, befuddled by his buffoonery.

All the other actors in this enterprise, despite their one-note roles, conform to the universe of this film, to its reality, but Khan's having nothing of it. He performs in an inexplicably bizarre pitch, as if the filmmakers (and himself, the producer) decided that he should play it like a rejected 40s cartoon, like Daffy Duck gone awry. Khan yelps and squeaks and shrieks and bares fangs and pouts and, well, exhausts himself overcompensating at every step, despite nobody else in the film following this template so inanely animated it'd make Jim Carrey think twice. A looney out of tune, then.

It's a shame because Chennai Express is built on a simple enough bit of fluff, something that would truly have sparkled brightly in the hands of, say, an Imtiaz Ali, but something that would itself have been inherently more entertaining had Khan not been intent on looking an imbecile. In sum: Rahul, entrusted with his grandfather's ashes to be immersed down south, decides instead to hotfoot it to Goa and party with friends who have "arranged" NRI girls. He gets on to a train to throw his sweet, unsuspecting grandmother off his scent, and it is here he runs into Padukone's Meena, a pretty girl with an accent thicker than Mehmood. She's being kidnapped, he tries to speak up, and they're both frogmarched down to her village where her gangster father is told that our hero is her daughter's suitor. There, see? Simple, fun and the ensuing hijinks pretty much write themselves. Even with a few too many airborne jeeps, this could have been a daftly enjoyable lark. (But alas, we underestimate the power of a common Khan.)

Padukone, as said, pulls off her bit with panache. So confident is she that even her outlandish accent seems normal after a bit, and she commits to the role most enthusiastically. I'd comment on her comic timing if this film had any well-written gags, but by herself (and especially in comparison to her hero here) Padukone is a delight. She's visibly having a blast and her glee is infectious. She delivers a Bachchan line with lan, and is particularly awesome in a scene where ' in a nod to the southern horror clich ' she's casually possessed by a ghost. This may not be the most demanding of roles, but the actress revels in the madness around her and shines through like a bonafide star.

The first half of the film, with Khan monkeying about unfettered, is relentlessly awful. (Somebody confiscate his Steve McQueen t-shirt.) It is also ear-splittingly loud, with everyone seemingly yelling and the background score choosing not to background itself very much after all. The writing is bad enough to make a Priyadarshan film look subtle. In the second half, things get less asinine ' this is directly in proportion to Khan shutting up for a stretch ' but then the film takes turns rolling through many a overused filmi clich without ever managing to spoof them. Shah Rukh goes from being Daffy Duck to Ram Jaane, suddenly all melodramatic and quivery-voiced and so damned earnest that his character forgets that he doesn't know a word of Tamil, climactically rattling off complicated lines in the language.

There is one genuinely clever moment. It is the one bit of self-referencing that works, when Shah Rukh ' with the Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge music playing ' stretches out his arm and yanks Deepika onto a moving train, before doing the same, complete with music, for each of the gigantic kidnappers chasing her. Super. For the rest of the film, Rohit Shetty made me feel more like a lovelorn Kajol than anybody should, and it had nothing to do with Simran: but damn, I missed Ajay Devgn.

Rating: One star

Deepika has successfully made Raja Sen praise her twice in a row...and over two leading actors that Sen actually generally likes Ranbir and SRK 👏

While talking about a film like Chennai Express, it's important to first get the bothersome bits out of the way, before moving onto the fun parts. So here goes: Chennai Express is a boring, humourless, stereotype-driven, infuriating film, featuring an actor desperately trying to get back on top of his game. Now for the fun parts: there are none.

Yes, Chennai Express, the love child of Rohit Shetty and Shah Rukh Khan and this year's Eid offering, has no redeeming quality. Except, may be, Deepika Padukone when she isn't talking. The most annoying thing about Chennai Express, however, is not that it lives up to what its trailers promised - senseless comedy and an unimaginative screenplay – but that it's not even unintentionally fun. You don't laugh with the film, you don't even laugh at the film. You just weep into your seat, waiting for the misery to end.

The setup is intriguing. Padukone plays Meena, a girl who has run away from her village in Chennai, and so – like any sensible girl running away from a place – gets on the Chennai Express in Mumbai, which takes her straight to her village. You do wish she had used better judgement and escaped in another direction, the north may be. But then it would have been called Bhatinda Express, and would have had Khan standing with his arms stretched in the mustard fields of Punjab – a scenario best left in the '90s. We settle for Chennai then.

As you may have watched in the promo, Meena meets the 40-year-old Rahul (Khan) on the train, who unsuspectingly becomes part of the drama. He's supposed to be going to Goa (and is mighty excited about it too, jumping like a 15-year-old at the prospect), but ends up being taken hostage by the four men escorting Meena back to her village. There, he meets Meena's gangster daddy (Satyaraj) who, in an innovative plot twist, wants to get her forcefully married off.

The production design is extremely detailed here – almost every frame has coconuts, with a sickle dug deep into one of them. It's a prop that keeps reappearing, just like a humourless gag involving Rahul and Meena talking to each other via Hindi film songs, so the Tamil folk around don't get what they are saying. In one scene, the joke goes on for so long, you wish you'd choke on your popcorn instead of listening to the actors sing tunelessly any further. Dialogues largely include Hindi translations of Tamil lines, and the occasional "illai", "appa", "amma", "poda".

The big talking point before Chennai Express released – because such films encourage debate – was whether it will be a "Rohit Shetty film" or a "Shah Rukh Khan film". The result is a combination of the worst of both worlds: Shetty's trademark narrative technique – a pumped-up background score – complementing Shah Rukh Khan's facial contortions and hyperactive body language to create a surreal film viewing experience. Surreal, because you get a walk down memory lane, with Shetty paying tribute to Khan's entire filmography in less than 150 minutes – with references to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil Se, My Name is Khan, even Ra.One – while all the time you keep expecting Ajay Devgn to appear in a white ganji and go all "Aata majhi satakli".

However, this is supposed to be a mindless entertainer (whatever that means) and hence it would be wise to not nitpick, I am told. Shetty has said repeatedly in the past that his films aren't for "critics". Chennai Express surely isn't. For critics, or for anything that breathes and has a brain.

Chennai Express review: Deepika and her 'bokwas' dialogues are the best part of the ride

by Mihir Fadnavis 19 mins ago

Mai bachpan me Baazigar dekhi. Shah Rukh ka eyes color change dekh ke, anarkali ko ice cream khila ke suitcase me fit karte dekh ke mai full SRK fan ho gayi. Phir mai Darr dekhi. Shah Rukh Sunny Deol ko pundai bana ke Juhi Chawla ko Ray Ban glasses me romance kari. Life mey first time mai negative role ko support kari.

Phir mai Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa dekhi, usme Shah Rukh jo cap pehni, mai dhoond dhoond ke khareedi aur mere neighborhood girl ko motorcycle me ghuma ke 'Deewaana Dil Deewana' gaane ka sochi. Life mey first time mai 'hero who doesn't get the girl' irony samjhi. Romba powerful cinema experience lagi.

Phir mai Ram Jaane dekhi, aur life me first time brain aneurism feeling lagi. Mai sochi, bade bade industry me aisi choti choti galatiyan hoti rehti. Lekin Shah Rukh ek ke baad ek, saalon tak romba ketta commercialised 'easy' fillims karne lagi aur mera fandom poora erumai malam ho gayi. Mai ab sochi, Shah Rukh risk kabhi nahi leti, sirf ham acting karti aur consistently disappoint karti. Aisa disappointment aur aneurism mujhe Chennai Express me waapis lagi. Kashtam.

Rohit Shetty car po*n karti aur sab A list hero log 'Simbly South' style fillims karke nuru crore kamaati. So Shah Rukh sochti, mai bhi Madonna. Results: romba payankaramana.

Chennai Express bahoot schizophrenic film. Kabhi homage, kabhi self-reference masturbatory exercise, kabhi OTT action drama, kabhi slapstick comedy. Film bahut kuch karti, lekin sab kuch bokwas karti. Homage elements tacky banati, self-referencing poora grating banati, action aur drama boring banati, comedy mind numbingly unfunny banati. Itna bada budget and cinematic resources sab kalutai apanam me daal deti.

Fillim 'Rohit Shetty style' present hoti aur Deepika ka name before Shah Rukh name aati. Shah Rukh romba sweetu. No wonder sab wimmen usko like karti. Lekin sirf star power fillim nahi banati. Hum fillim buff budget nahi, balki accha story appreciate karti. Sadly Chennai Expressstory bahoot stupid story. Iska story Jab Tak Hai Jaan ko Citizen Kanejaisa dikhaati. Fillim me Deepika uske periyathalai (fother) ke darr se ghar se bhaag jaati. Isliye Periyathalai se chupne ke liye, Deepika Chennai train pakadti. Logic train window ke bahar girti. Aiyyo aise fillim mey mai logic to nahi chhati, lekin interesting story maangti. Aajkal movie ticket price tum dekhi? 500 rubees ho gayi. Family ko leke gayi to ticket khareedne ke liye lungi bechni padti.

Fillim mey ek silver lining dikhti ' Deepika Padukone bahoot lively and entertaining hoti. Comedy me Sharukh ko mokkai bana deti. Also, woh bahoot cute dikhti. Mai poochti, poora film Deepika jaise lively and entertaining kyun nahi hoti? First of all fillim ka running time Rameswaram to Goa train time se zyada lamba hoti. Plus wo tulai songs sunke mai SOOTHE MOODU chillati.

Kabhi kabhi filmmakers periya shameless ban jaati. Chennai Express me five minute long Nokia ad hoti. Product placement happens everywhere, but iss fillim mey Shah Rukh camera ko dekh ke teen baar Nokia phone model number aur price bolti. Hamara patience test karti. Isliye jab wo phone gaadi ke bahar keechad me girti, hum happy hoti. Waise bhi wo bokwas Windows Mobile phone kaun mollamari mai ka laal leti. Sab Android phone leti.

And self-referencing sab fillimmakers karti. Martin Scorsese bhi karti. Lekin acchi karti. Chennai Express me har two minutes ko Shah Rukh aur Deepika, Shah Rukh ke old songs gaati. Romba bore maarti. Old songs sunne ke liye mai 500 rubees nahi deti. Free mey iPod pe sunti. Shah Rukh ek self-referencing scene mey camera ko dekh ke fourth wall tod ke eyes wink karti. Hum eyes roll karti. Ye fillim nahi balki ek romba ego ko Thai massage lagti.

Fillim ke sab shortcomings mai ignore karti agar comedy funny hoti. Ye film comedy lagti jaise lingam gonorrhea comedy lagti. Shah Rukh ek scene me "nature's call" bolke sussu finger dikhaati, fir nature ko phone se call karne ki acting karti. Mai facepalm karti. Shah Rukh Rajini aur Balaiyya jaise comedy stunts try karti, lekin execution me embarrassing belly flop karti.

On top of that, Sharukh laugh mining ke liye cringe inducing overacting aur ham karti. Itna ham hoti, mai Shah Rukh ko Babe the pig bulati. Ek scene mey Shah Rukh uska chewing gum gunda ke face se bounce karke chew karti, phir tongue bahar nikalti. Mera lunch pet se bahar nikalti. Poora jokes fillim me funny facial expressions and gimmicky noises se juxtapose hoti. Shah Rukh real life mey bahoot smart, witty and funny hoti. Sharukh ko ye sab bokwas backround noise aur facial exaggeration zaroorat nahi lagti. Audience muttaitanam loosu koodhi nahi hoti, joke understanding ke liye indicator nahi lagti.

Fillim se mera ek hi takeaway hui. Hero-heroine against 80s' style small town don Himmatwala me bokwas hui, Chennai Express me bhi bokwas hui. Ada chi.
