^^^^ I think contribution of hit movies to industry far out weigh his crappy ones...

how cares..even his flop films...he tries something new...be it in concept or in execution..

more than 90% of directors can say...for me he is one of the most important directors of bollywood...in top 10 atleast...

Watched Nishabd a week back...only he can make those kind of movies in BW...and sensitivity with which eh dealt the whole subject is amazing...

people are just so incredibly narrow minded in teh cinema they watch...for it to fail...few user reviews for IMDB are worth a read...I hope people watch it...

And I actually think many people getting turned off from the movie was his victory...it was shown so convincing that people became very uncomfortable...

and isn't DDLJ overrated ? 😛😆

the reasons u r giving here for DDLJ ...sholay has much much more reasons to be the best , path breaking and epic movie of the BOLLYWOOD

and its not about anyone's personal liking or disliking

if current generation won't like mother india or Guide , if they will find these movies boring , it does not mean these movies were not path breaking or bad movies or overrated

Debang was pathbreaking and set the the trend for other actors. So akshay kumar (rowdy rah tore) ajay devgan (singham) and some others started putting on that mustache and playing cop left right and center.

Of course it is...that's why the reason that I gave for DDLJ to be a pathbreaking movie...is not the movie itself ...but the business it created for the BW movies...out of India...in USA, Canada and the European countries..

To judge if a film is path breaking you need to judge its impact on cinema, on audiences. Its not just about the content. There are many films which may not be the bestest films ever in terms of content or even storytelling but made a huge impact.

Sholay is one. Bachcha bachcha aaj bhi dialogues jaanta hai, knows the characters, the scenes. It's been like 40-50 years or something now. How can you say a film didn't stand the test of time if people still remember the film, it's dialogues, scenes, and ape it till this day even? Watch a popular desi TV show, I guarantee at some point Dharmendra's chakki peesing scene will be aped. Just recently Katrina did the scene in some film of hers. If not that scene, then some other will for sure be aped at some point. Overrated is one thing, but impact is another. Like the film or not, there has clearly not been a bigger phenomenon in Indian cinema...and it's unlikely there will be one.

DDLJ was a path-breaking love story for its time. First, NRI characters. Then, prior to that there hadn't been a love story where the guy and girl did not a) run away to be together b) sacrifice their love for the good of the family and wait for some miracle aka the dog/destiny to save their love story. Plus, it opened up international markets for Indian cinema. Today these films may not seem "different' but that's because we have seen so many versions of it by now.

Not sure what LSD is doing there honestly. Perhaps Khosla Ka Ghosla would be better, though not really.

True! And hence in IMO even Dabangg and Sholay should have been there. Critically acclaimed films are not neccessarily the most impactful among the masses.
Another film that should be there is DCH. Honestly singling out only 10 films is unfair.
