True! And hence in IMO even Dabangg and Sholay should have been there. Critically acclaimed films are not neccessarily the most impactful among the masses.Another film that should be there is DCH. Honestly singling out only 10 films is unfair.

^Yep Dabangg should have been there, as should DCH. That one definitely made a huge impact.

To judge if a film is path breaking you need to judge its impact on cinema, on audiences. Its not just about the content. There are many films which may not be the bestest films ever in terms of content or even storytelling but made a huge impact.
Sholay is one. Bachcha bachcha aaj bhi dialogues jaanta hai, knows the characters, the scenes. It's been like 40-50 years or something now. How can you say a film didn't stand the test of time if people still remember the film, it's dialogues, scenes, and ape it till this day even? Watch a popular desi TV show, I guarantee at some point Dharmendra's chakki peesing scene will be aped. Just recently Katrina did the scene in some film of hers. If not that scene, then some other will for sure be aped at some point. Overrated is one thing, but impact is another. Like the film or not, there has clearly not been a bigger phenomenon in Indian cinema...and it's unlikely there will be one.
DDLJ was a path-breaking love story for its time. First, NRI characters. Then, prior to that there hadn't been a love story where the guy and girl did not a) run away to be together b) sacrifice their love for the good of the family and wait for some miracle aka the dog/destiny to save their love story. Plus, it opened up international markets for Indian cinema. Today these films may not seem "different' but that's because we have seen so many versions of it by now.
Not sure what LSD is doing there honestly. Perhaps Khosla Ka Ghosla would be better, though not really.
very well said. choco. i wasn't born watching hindi movies. i wasn't even born when sholay released. when i began watching hindi movies and visiting forums, this sholay name was constantly thrown at me. i was so much in love with these DDLJ, HAHK, that hardly bothered to take a peak at sholay. but one day i did. now i am ready to fight all, that indeed sholay is the greatest movie ever.as for path breaking..yes definitely DDLJ, i also like they have HAHK, imagine a movie with so many songs, i heard some labelled this one marriage video songs😆.
