1995 - 2009? Oh please. In the 90s, it was mainly Salman and SRK swapping places. Salman was top from 1995 - 1999. SRK really took the mantle from 2002 onwards and was comfortably top, until 2008. After Aamir's Ghajini came out, it moved towards Aamir and 3I cemented it. Then Dabbang shifted it to Salman, with Bodyguard making the gap huge.

The thing is, if some actor arrived with a thunder like Salman in the late 80s and HR in 2000, then we could say that, but with the lack of stars in Bollywood today, SRK will be a top-tier superstar for the next many years. In the 90s, the top stars were the Khans, Sunny, Govinda, Akshay, and Ajay. In the next decade, it was the Khans, a new sensation HR, and Akshay. Presently, it's the Khans, Akshay, and HR. So for the past three decades the same stars have ruled, with the only new star in between being HR. Frankly, there aren't many stars emerging into Bollywood these days. If we look at the younger lot, it's Ranbir and Emraan, but they haven't reached the craze of the ones I mentioned before.

For this reason alone, SRK's star power won't wane. Unless we get the next generation of Salman, Aamir, and SRK, the Khans will remain there. SRK just needs to reinvent himself. His CE will work, but is that enough? We'll see. The problem with SRK is that he doesn't do movies with the "good" filmmakers. He sticks with his buddies. Star power isn't an issue. It's just this phase and with Bollywood at an all time low--as far as star power is concerned--not only SRK but most of the stars ruling for the past three decades are safe!

Films make stars, stars don't make films. You look at any time in history and its the popular genre of that time that dictates the star, not the other way.

In the 70's and 80's Masala ruled, Bachchan and Dharmendra were the genre's top star. Romantic heroes of that time took a back seat.
90's Action and Romance took over. Srk, Salman and Sunny ruled this era.
00's Romance and Comedy. Srk, Aamir, Akshay were most consistent
10's Masala is back and so is Salman, Ajay and Akshay.

My whole point is that unless Romance makes a speedy recovery, SRK will never reach those dizzying heights again. It will always exist, so will SRK but the top genre will always decide the top star. Case in point being Sunny, once multiplexes took over and the action genre died, so did Sunny's career. You can only reinvent yourself so much, your image of 25 years is always going to stay with you. Even if romance becomes the top genre again, there are younger actors to took over the reigns like Ranbir. Its going to be a gradual fall for SRK, from here on out.

Is there a lot of excitement about Chennai Express? I remember the madness surrounding MNIK before it opened and the anticipation for Ra.One but I'm a little out of the loop on CE anticipation.
