Why the f**k would you sign a petition? Because he's a changed man? So what? People change every day. If the criminals were let free of charge, I doubt this world would remain safe for even a day. He commited a CRIME. He deserved punishment just like any ordinary criminal does. Just because he's a star doesn't mean he can get away with everything. The people who support him are all messed up IMO. Family or close friends put aside, everyone else who doesn't want him to go to jail get a reality check. What if someone from your family was a victim? What if you yourself were a victim? This is equal to saying sign a petition for Shiney Ahuja and not let him go to jail even though he raped someone and got away with it.
People need to stop being such big hypocrites. At one hand your supporting punishment against rapists stating they deserve to be punished but then you don't want him to go to jail. Why do you always want the laws mended? Shouldn't they be the same and fair for everyone.

According to an article "A Mumbai court has fixed the hearing of 2002 hit-and-run case against Bollywood actor Salman Khan on March 25, when he would have to remain present before the court. Along with the prosecution's case against Salman, the court would also hear his appeal against the Magistrate's order, invoking the charge of 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder' against him which attracts a punishment up to ten years in prison."

I don't think Sanjay Dutt is a criminal. I do feel sorry for him. I think he made a stupid mistake by violating the law. But he was just stupid and nave, not malicious or criminal. I don't think illegal possession warrants five years unless the person has actual criminal ties or other forms of malicious behavior.

At the same time, it is the court's decision. The courts have a duty to interpret and execute the law, and I'm sure they had their reasons to convict Sanjay Dutt and sentence him to prison.

This isn't a "worthy" enough cause for me to consider signing a petition. I'd only consider something worthy only if it was a genuine victim with the system and odds stacked against them. In the case of Sanjay Dutt it is a level playing field. He's a celebrity and I'm sure he can afford top notch lawyers and legal fees to represent him in court. An average Joe who made a stupid mistake wouldn't be as lucky. Average Joes don't get breaks for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
