I do not consider myself a feminist, says Anushka Sharma

PTI : New Delhi, Sat Mar 16 2013, 14:52 hrs

Actress Anushka Sharma believes that Bollywood item songs should not be blamed for depicting vulgarity on screen as such songs are part of entertainment.

"I do not consider myself a feminist and I do not believe that by doing female-oriented films and depicting women fighting the system, we can change the system. Or by omitting item song we can change mindsets," Anushka said at the India Today conclave here.

The 24-year-old actress, who made her debut with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi opposite Shah Rukh Khan, and starred in hits like Band Baaja Baaraat and Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, says such songs are played out at every family function and wedding in the country, indicating their acceptance.

"I haven't done item songs out of choice as they have not appealed me creatively. I consider them a part of entertainment. What I have a problem with is when a song is not done well.

"These item songs garner maximum viewership and are played at every family function so why should an actor or film industry should be subjected to such hypocrisy. Popularity of item song is testimony to its acceptance. So If you are accepting it, take responsibility for your choices," said Anushka.

The actress is famous for playing relatable characters like a wedding planner, a TV reporter and a Haryanavi girl onscreen and Anushka says she likes playing real characters.

"I do not choose characters because I think 'wow that woman is so strong'. I chose these characters with utmost conviction because I think they were realistic enough to exist and I really liked the scripts," she said.

Once she signs a female oriented film she will change her tune.

Of course she is not a feminist! Or else she'd have remained comfortable in her own skin instead of getting plastic surgery and doing makeovers. I used to like her for being comfortable with who she was, for never trying hard to fit in and for focus on talent than glamour.

A strong woman is one who's comfortable with who she naturally is.

If someone gets plastic surgery, what's wrong with that? It's their freaking body, they can do whatever they want with it. Get surgery, get tattoos, get piercings, lose weight, gain weight.. it's her body. I don't understand how this is being related to feminism, but whatever.

Her surgeries did go bad though; and I wish she accepted doing them. A strong woman would be one who does whatever she wants and owning up to them. But alas, this is the glamour world and the audience is all, "AAH PLASTIC SURGERY NOO WE DON'T LIKE PLASTICS!!" so of course she won't own up. She will get judged nonetheless. Also, she has started to look unhealthy with the weight loss and I have critcized her for it + the surgeries; but eh. It's her body after all. I hope she takes care of herself though.

Anyways, at least she owns up to not being a feminist. Many people say they are feminists but then hate on other females for things like.. plastic surgery (when they have the full right to get them). 😛
