...I congrts UTV n Siddhart Bhai for supporting #KaiPoChe in so big way. I m sure tat no other producer could have done this. Superb
So I watched the movie yesterday but my mind was so messed up after the movie that I could not post my views immediately. I read somewhere that it is the sign of a good movie- when the screenplay involves you so deeply that it fails to leave your mind long after you have seen it. And the same happened to me! More on that later.
Let me start by saying that the pre-interval portion is more or less same as Chetan Bhagat's novel, very few differences are there. The post interval portion is where the differences come up. Full marks to the team for adapting the good points of the novel, its message (albeit differently) and covering up its shortcomings- and all that without making it seem filmy anywhere. Putting up a whole novel in almost two hours without leaving anything is difficult but not once did I feel they were hurrying along the plot too much. In fact some scenes had that slowness, subtlety which I loved and which gave greater meaning to the scenes, like when Ali hits his first shot in his debut match, on the off side and with restrain, as taught by Ishaan, or when Govind touches the seats of the car with a dreamy expression when they are returning from Diu, probably dreaming of owning one himself one day.
As so many people have said, the bonding between the boys, their camaraderie was the star of the movie. There were no over the top jokes just for the sake of having some comedy, the light moments were so nicely interspersed in between their conversations, it didn't look forced at all- like Omi and Ishaan in drunk mode and proving they are not drunk, or Ishaan's one liners. All of them excelled in the fighting scenes, lol.
Music as we all know was excellent but I was surprised that the songs were picturised differently from the way they were shown in promos. Background music was the best in the climax scenes, also I loved cinematography of Meethi Boliyan the most. A special mention for the whole earthquake sequence- that was brilliantly shot.
Coming to the actors- all were good in their roles. Amit (Omi) was most impressive in the climax scenes- his red eyes, body language, dishevelled state were so scary- gave you the feeling that 'oh dear he's gonna do something now!' Rajkumar (govind) was brilliant especially with his language, the way he pronounced some English words and even Hindi words in a not- so- correct way gave a special touch to his character, and his awkwardness was cute! Amrita (vidya) acted well, the romantic scenes between Vidya and govind were nicely done and light. I also loved the terrace scene between Ishaan and her and the way both of them used to fight- they sure had a good bro-sis chemistry. Loved all the Ishaan-Ali scenes, they left me with a smile on my face everytime- this track was really well developed and the bond between them beautifully portrayed. Manav Kaul was wonderful as Bittoo Mama. He was menacing without being OTT.
And as for Sushant (Ishaan), I have no words- he completely outdid himself and was such a natural performer, no where could I even imagine him as Manav- it is hard for me to pick one scene which I loved cos ek toh Sushant performed very well and secondly Ishaan was the best developed character (and my favourite character) in the film as well as the book and his relationship with every character was shown very well. He had wonderful screen presence- the last scene of the movie just left me saying 'Awww..'
Finally a special word on the climax, which occupied my mind the whole day yesterday, and for those like me who initially hated the ending.
SPOILER ALERT.
I hated hated hated the ending when I came out of the cinema hall. Maybe cos Ishaan had always been my favourite character, but even then I had major issues with the climax. For one, I felt it ruined the significance of Govind- Vidya's love story. One minute Ishaan comes to know of the the truth, he's thrashing Govind, the next minute its all dhishoom dhishoom and dishkiyaoon- Ishaan dies. Building the love story therefore seemed pointless to me, cos a proper confrontation of Ishaan, Govind, Vidya never took place, nor did it have any impact unlike the book. Secondly, Kai Po Che meaning I cut your kite, it looked more like destiny defeated their friendship, in a movie on friendship I didn't really want to see Ishaan getting killed by the hands of his best friend. The ending was tragic and very sad, something I had not expected from a movie with such hopeful songs. Chetan Bhagat's ending actually seemed better to me at that point- at least the book ended with some messages. I really could not understand why this ending was chosen.
It is when these questions arise and you start looking for answers that you realise why this movie is a genius. I guess the writers had to show this twist cos Ishaan's unfortunate death was the only thing that could have stopped Omi from commiting the heinous crime of killing other innocent Muslims- Omi had completely lost reason, could not differentiate right or wrong, fair or unfair in his vengeance and grief. He wasn't scared of police, god, law- anything, neither was he listening to anyone. Since he had lost his parents and uncle in one day, he was in such a state of mind that even God could not have stopped him from 'taking revenge'. The only thing which shook him up completely was when he shot his best friend when trying to kill another- the gun fell from his hands, vengeance became secondary, grief and guilt came to the fore. A completely believable, understandable scenario - good job AK and team!
Also, I found it awesome how so many things were conveyed so subtly and not through words or on surface level. Like Govind not only staying in touch with Omi in prison or going to receive him from prison, but also accepting him back in his life, thus proving their friendship actually withstood this storm too and it actually won. Even Vidya accepted Omi back in their life inspite of the fact that he killed her brother accidentally- cos sometimes you just have to move on over past events else life becomes very difficult (a parallelism to the Hindu Muslim track I assume) and here there was someone who had loved her brother more than himself. Omi- Vidya scene was one of the highlights of the ending. Finally Ishaan's dream of making Ali what he could not become himself too got fulfilled, and Vidya-Govind seemingly made up for their guilt by naming their son after Ishaan. Another fab scene was little Ishaan handing Omi the Indian flag. Basically everyone moved out of the rubble of emotions to bond again and emerge victorious, with hope for the future in every way.
And of course, Ali hitting a four in slow motion on the off side, apparently in remembrance of his coach. Superb touch! Now when I listen to the Manjha song, all the lines seem so much more relevant.
This movie definitely deserves all the praise it is getting. And I want to watch it again too, just to figure out all the other little nuances that have much deeper meaning than when you see them the first time. A must watch movie.
