Nawazuddin, Prashant favour ban on item songs

Actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Prashant Narayanan support the Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) decision to be more stringent about the content of item songs which go on TV. The two feel that raunchy numbers can impact children and banning such songs won't take too much away from a movie.

Prashant, who has been part of intense and bold films like Bhindi Baazaar and Murder 2, respectively, says it is good that a "non-crucial part of a film" would be banned.

"If people have to sell their films by showing the item songs only, then it is good that they are banning it. I feel something which is not a crucial part of the film and is used as a marketing strategy to sell a film should not be shown on TV," Prashant said in an interview.

The censor board decided to tighten its standards for item songs and other similar category videos after a number of complaints regarding the quality of content on a public platform like TV came in, following the Delhi gangrape incident.

Nawazuddin feels such songs are having a negative impact on children and, therefore, it is a good step by CBFC.

"This ban on item songs is very necessary. If you say that TV is a family entertainer, then there are kids as well in a family and don't learn anything other than this," the 39-year-old said in an interview.

"The entire day they only watch such songs and dances and then they react in a similar manner. So I am feeling good about it (the measures)," added the actor who wowed everyone with his performances in Gangs of Wasseypur and Kahaani.

But that's other story that she had that character and hence the dance...but still its an time song

Agreed...these songs are just to titillate the audience without any relevance to the story

I don't mind item songs. Of course they can be crude and objectify women. But at the same time they can be fun and entertaining. I'll sorely miss item songs from our stereotypical masala movies, if we ever ban or reduce them. I really can't imagine a world without the Sheilas and Munnis. And all that from a woman.

We have to stop blaming media and entertainment for rape. Why does India have a rape crisis? Because our men are not taught how to respect women nor are they taught how to interact and court women with dignity. But it's all Bollywood's fault right because they encourage such behavior through item songs and cheap rowdy type film? No, it is society's fault for failing to draw the distinction between fiction and reality and teaching the right thing.

The west objectifies women too. We have these things known as cheerleaders who jump and prance and titillate often before they are barely teens. We had shows like Baywatch that became iconic for women in their bikinis. There's this whole popular DVD series known as Girls Gone Wild about girls getting drunk and exposing themselves. po*n is legal here, so are strip clubs and sex shops. But still you are less likely to be ogled, sexually harassed or raped in these countries whereas in India if you are a woman you can take ogling and sexual harassment through eve teasing as a 100% given. And the difference is not item songs or objectification of women. The difference is society that tries to take responsibility and teaches their young men and women the right attitude towards sex and each other.

Stop blaming item songs for an overall failure of society.

a) Its not gonna make a difference.

b) its not just the item songs and banning them alone wont decrease rape by "non-objectifying" women. Nope.

c) change has to happen within society. Has to happen in the thinking, upbringing of kids.

d) the likes of Arbaz khan, sajid khan will find a 'creative' way to get around it, so it'll be pointless.

It's immaterial whether item songs directly cause sexual crimes or not. They objectify women and are vulgar, hence should be banned.
