From Maine Pyar Kiya to Ek Tha Tiger, one thing has remained constant and that is the Salman Khan mania. We take a look at some of the reasons behind the ever-increasing market value of Bollywood's mega star

Rarely do you see superstars like Salman Khan. An actor whose first film as a solo hero (Maine Pyar Kiya ' 1989) was a blockbuster; the next 20 years were nothing but the scariest of roller coaster rides, with the last three years being his best. But he hung on, taking on competition of all kind. In MPK, he began as the cute yet stylish loverboy who would do anything for his love. Women of all ages swooned over this new lad. You might remember the magazine cover saying 'A million dollar star is born', with a smashing image of Salman.

Aamir Khan, who had won hearts as the new romantic hero just a year-and-a-half earlier in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, now had to face some serious competition. Both Salman and Aamir had their fair share of flops in the initial days of their career. But while Aamir soon announced that he would do only one film at a time and focus on diverse roles, Salman ruled the masses with his total masala fare.

Rauf Ahmed, former editor, Filmfare, spoke to BollywoodLife about the Salman phenomenon, "He has always had a huge fan following of women and that has helped him sail through. Also, he has a very strong team behind him. His father, veteran scriptwriter Salim Khan has a very shrewd sense of what works at the box office."

But what is the reason for the resurgence of the Salman mania in the last three years? "I would say it's the times. I think all credit should go to director Abhinav Kashyap for creating a character like Chulbul Pandey for Salman in mega blockbuster Dabangg (2010). The role and the film reflect today's era, when people are up against corruption in society. Chulbul was a corrupt cop but always fought against evil ' somewhat like Robinhood. Dabangg was more a turning point in Salman's sagging 20-year career than his 2009 superhit Wanted." And it is to Salman's credit that he is able to identify and bag the kind of roles he knows will work with the masses today. According to Ahmed, the actor "mixed action and comedy with great panache".

Indu Mirani, film writer and journalist, says Salman was huge after his debut, but he went down later. His film Bandhan (1998) is what got him back in the reckoning, she feels, followed by Biwi No.1 and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in the same year. But he was still not seen as successful a bet as Shahrukh Khan back then. So what has contributed to Sallu's meteoric rise to the No.1 position today, beating his arch rival-turned-buddy Aamir? This standing of the Bhai was not even seen in mega hits like Hum Aapke Hain Koun'! (1994) that ran for weeks together. Explains Mirani, "The earlier hits cannot be compared to today's times with figures, as those films released with barely 500 prints vis--vis the 1,500 prints of today." Salman perfectly understands this logic and thinks earning Rs 100 crore is no big deal at the box office. There's one quality of a superstar ' business acumen.

Plus, there is no doubt about the fact that movies are better marketed today and there are more avenues for doing so. Also, observes Ahmed, "Salman has matured and mellowed down now. He knows there is no point in having a conflict with the media. This has happened to Amitabh Bachchan before. But the actors realise that film reviews and critics might go against them, but it's the media that helps them build a long-lasting image. Same goes for the field of politics."

But will the craze continue? "It will not, if he repeats himself. That is the mistake that Akshay Kumar made. But Salman is intelligent enough to not do it. With Ek Tha Tiger too, he has surprised everyone by doing what is not expected of him." And that explains why the megastar has now revealed that he is doing a romantic film next, and is tired of action already. He knows the pulse of the masses, or better still, knows the pulse of his fans and what they want. He also knows he is ageing and cannot do what he did 10-15 years ago. A superstar's trait again.

What the future holds for him, we don't know. But all we can say is ' we are waiting to see more from you and of you, Salman!

Disagree with the bit that he was back in reckoning with bandhan and was not successful bet as SRK !It was HAHK which brought back him followed by karan arjun, judwaa !92-93 were his only bad yrs otherwise he had a great 90s

Bollywood Life website is pro-srk site, even if they will write good for Salman, it will have mocking in different way, ke woh aisa tha aisa hai, his films r this n that... even in this article, they r writing ke Salman is nothing just his female fan following ke wajah se chalta raha, he cameback with this n that... seriously, if u don't wanna praise then what's the fun in writing this artcle??

After MPK, he came back with Bandhan in 1998? What a logic... What was Baaghi den? 2nd Smash hit after MPK... seriously it always shows how BollywoodLife pretend to be a Neautral Bollywood website while it mocks the popular stars except for few whom they like...

Salman Khan is definitely number one right now, but some of the reasoning in the article are pretty lame. Let's give credit where its due. I am going to quote my post from another thread because for me I think I have summed up why I believe Salman is Number one. .

I think beyond the repetitive masala flicks and box office numbers, one has to look at his career graph. He was noticed in Maine Pyar Kiya as the ultimate chocolate boy. He then did Baaghi, which again fighting for his love, similar yet treated very differently. Both of these films had amazing sound tracks that contributed a lot to the success of the film. Early 90s still had Music as a major contributor. Audiences did go watch a film just based on great music score. Several films followed such as Sanam Bewafaa, Pathhar ke Phool, Kurbaan, Love, and Saajan. All romantic films, yet his characters had different shades. Then comes Suryavanshi. As strange as it may sound, I actually loved the film. It was something different from the norm. He then did a movie called Chandramukhi, again was different, mostly appealed to the children. These films didn't work, but it is unfair to say that he never tried to step out of his comfort zone, which most stars dont. Then came Andaz Apna Apna, again a FLOP at the time, probably due to the era that it was released in, but the importance was given only years after. HAHK came as a blessing for Salman Khan. A movie made for the families. A friendly, outgoing Prem then returned as Karan of Karan Arjun and Ajay of Veergati. This was a total transformation for Salman Khan. He then did Khamoshi, which again was an exceptional movie. The movie belonged to Nana Patekar, Seema Biswas, and Manisha. He was overshadowed, but needless to say he did explore into different cinema. Then came the long chain of comedy films. From Judwaa to Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge. I could say this was probably the lowest phase for him. He did films for friends and he didnt explore other areas, which he has done in the past. The HOT Salman Khan came in limelight for his looks in Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya. Oh Oh Jane Jana became a sensation. During this phase, he did do a few memorable films like HSSH and Baghban. Playing Aman, a secondary character to the main lead in KKHH was probably not easy for him, but as a friend he did it. Same goes for HTHS. He reminds me of Shashi Kapoor. Mr. Kapoor always played the second fiddle to Amitabh Bachan, yet he was the senior. In 2003, he did Tere Naam, which brought out another side of him on screen. He did a movie called Phir Milenge, which was an awareness film on AIDS. He played a Military Office as a Sardar in Heroes. He did a periodic film such as Veer. However, amidst all of this he rediscovered himself. He brought in heroism, which did wonders for him. Why should he not taste success when he is getting it with these movies? He saw failures in his life and he doesn't want to be there anymore. I do not blame him. In addition, I am satisfied that the money he is partially earning is somehow helping the poor and the ones who are in need. I read many times Being Human is a publicity stunt because it is much talked about in media and by Salman Khan himself. I would like to emphasize that if they do not publicize their brand how will people buy t-shirts, watches,or whatever they may have? That is the money that will go in charity. It is easy to say that its being done for publicity, but lets look at the point that it is helping someone. He doesnt need to do this for stardom, other stars dont beside the occasional charities so am sure he is no different. To invest so much time and energy, one must really be wanting to help. He is who he is. People dont like the stuck up Salman Khan, who he always is one in majority of the interviews, but when he is with kids that Salman disappears. Its like he didnt even exist. He is who he is and whether people like him or not he simply doesnt let that impact him or what he does. He is not pretentious and that is why he doesnt do anything to change anyone's perception of him. He doesnt feel the need to change himself to be accepted. He has flaws and he is not perfect, but maybe that is what I liked about him. Sometimes as a fan, I did wish that he hadnt made some of the decisions that he made and maybe was a bit more approachable, but I guess that would contradict what I have said earlier. I know a lot of people watch movies for the brilliance of a story, but I am someone who watches movies to get away from reality of life.
Anyway I should stop here.
