Shahrukh Khan: I am made a symbol of all that is unpatriotic about Muslims in India

Shahrukh Khan: I am made a symbol of all that is unpatriotic about Muslims in India
Yogen Shah

SRK bares it all on what it means to be a Muslim in the post-9/11 world

Shahrukh Khan says how he became an "inadvertent object of political leaders" in his interview to Outlook Turning Points magazine, published in association with The New York Times newspaper. Titled Being a Khan, the write-up appears in the current issue of the magazine and the 47-year-old actor, one of the few Indian actors with international recognition, writes: "I sometimes become the inadvertent object of political leaders who choose to make me a symbol of all that they think is wrong and unpatriotic about Muslims in India."

"There have been occasions when I have been accused of bearing allegiance to our neighbouring nation rather than my own country – this even though I am an Indian, whose father fought for the freedom of India. Rallies have been held where leaders have exhorted me to leave and return what they refer to my original homeland," added the superstar of Hindi cinema.

SRK is married to Gauri, a Hindu, and has two children – Aryan and Suhana. "I gave my son and daughter names that could pass for generic (pan-India and pan-religious) ones – Aryan and Suhana. The Khan has been bequeathed by me so they can't really escape it."

"I pronounce it with my epiglottis when asked by Muslims and throw the Aryan as evidence of their race when non-Muslims enquire. I imagine this will prevent my offspring from receiving unwarranted eviction orders or random fatwas in the future," he wrote.

He said he became so sick of being mistaken for some crazed terrorist, "who co-incidentally carries the same name as mine that I made a film subtly titled My Name Is Khan (and I am not a terrorist) to prove a point."

Set in the post 9/11 US, My Name Is Khan focuses on religious and national identities through Rizwan (SRK), who has Asperger's syndrome, and how his Khan identity becomes all important in a suspicious America.

"Ironically, I was interrogated at the airport for hours about my last name when I was going to promote the film in America for the first time," said SRK.

Whenever such incidents like Mumbai Attacks happen...one can't help but become hostile to the minority group which is sad but inevitable

Similarly any Muslim being targeted causes uproar against Hindus

Until one becomes tolerant for all the religion...peace is hard to maintain

SRK is targeted more so because he is a celebrity...plus a non-mumbaiker

For quite a long time now, SRK is coming across more of a whiner and cry baby than a strong willed superstar.
SRK atleast knows why he was whisked off and interrogated, that his name resembles a terrorist's name. Thats a very legitimate reason for interrogation. There are many who go through the same but they never know why.
Even India's president Abdul kalam was frisked away at US airports. Never saw him complaining about it.

We will never understand how it feels to be detained at the airport because someone suspects u to be a terrorist...or how it feels to be asked to leave ur country and live in Pakistan despite being an Indian just because u are a muslim...He has earned his WHINING RIGHTS for life...

Stop whining! Who isn't targeted by bigots in India? Those types exist everywhere. You don't need to prove to anyone as to how patriotic you are. 🤔

These idiots who go after celebs or anyone for that matter need to realize being a Muslim has nothing do with being an Indian; two different spectrums. 🤪

Honestly, he shouldn't let these things get to him.

As far as being detained goes, he's not the first person to be detained nor will he be the last person. Security comes first, why should he get a pass over an average folk. Though i personally don't agree with the some of the security protocols post 9/11, but hey, it's a cruel world.

He can whine on for his whole life, its his life afterall. Though as a fan i would have loved him potray his phamous sense of humour too..

Also he was TOLD to go back to neigbouring country when he asked Pakistan players to be included in IPL and that too just after 26/11. It was totally insensitive on his part to do that.
He WAS'nT TOLD to leave India coz he is a muslim.
