Why are old singers not given much work in B-Town

This is something which always puzzled me! Why do singers like Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kumar Sanu, Abhijeet, Poornima, Vinod Rathod, Roop Kumar Rathod etc. get less or no work at all?! They keep taking other odd voices in songs nowadays giving excuse of encouraging new talent but those voices are nowhere as striking as old singers! Udit's voice still sounds so fresh and has the same zing as it used to have in past. Why doesn't he get work?

Even a few popular singers in 1999-2002 have disappeared now like Babul Supriyo and sister duo of Preeti-Pinky (who sang Piya Piya song featuring Rani-Preity). It's been a while since we heard a Kunal Ganjawala song too (to think he'd become a rage after songs in Murder).

Lot of other popular voices like Anaida, Sunita Rao, Anuradha Paudwal and her daughter, Alisha Chinai disappeared. Alisha just had Kajra re in 2005.

Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar seem to be the only ones who've continued to get work after a certain age. Lot of voices from 80s, 90s and mid-2000s have gone now.

What's the reason for not giving work to singers after a while?

Some price factor, some their egos... like abhijeet got jealous of atif...

Sonu is still singing, not that much...

Also new singers come in less price, plus fresh appeal 2 album.

Good topic..i think Sonu once said singers and even music composers dont get their worth and thus they seek new singers who they can pay less.

The reason Asha is around as she mixes with all gens and not just old school charm..Her sister on the otherhand hardly does playback. Abhijeet as had ego issues..and other reasons..like some singers styles outdated i guess ..

Unfortunate! Many voices were far better than naive voices picked from talent hunts in today's age. Yeah Sonu Nigam works far less now than he used to in 90s or mid 2000s.

Shaan's sister Sagarika was also a good singer but it's surprising she was never heard again after 2 popular songs from her 90s albums.

I actually prefer right singers singing a song rather than having someone like Shreya Ghoshal try to do justice to an item song (Chikni Chameli).

Shaan was flavour of the season for some years even he seems to be singing less than he used to, in past.

If actors' tantrums can be tolerated for decades then what's wrong with putting up a bit with singers? Abhijit had ego issues. I never heard much about Udit giving anyone a hard time with his attitude.

I felt that too.

But looking at Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik and Kavitha Krishnamurthy. They all had over 12 years run which is still short compared to olden days. But the likes of Vinod Rathod, Hariharan, Poornima, RPR and Anuradha Paudwal were underrated and had very short time.

Alisha China actually had pretty long run. From Kaante Nahi Kate in 1987 to recent Tera Hone Laga & Jiyara in 2009/2010.

I was surprised with Kunal Ganjawala's length which was decent 4 years. 😡

SP Bala had very short run in Bollywood. Infact he is still singing in other languages.

I think music directors should be put at blame. They believe the voices sound outdated but Lata's voice on Preity and Asha's voice on young Sneha went well than why not these guys.

Sonu Nigam & Sunidhi Chauhan will have very short run till their time is up. Shaan's time seems to be already over. Sukhwinder only gets title songs on Masala films.

It's quite sad literally. But I was happy that, Sajid Wajid & Vishal Shekhar brought back Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan last year. Their voice suits all 40+ star anyway. So, let's hope bollywood give their singers equal respect by giving more work to them then just hire new bunch

Actually, after working for so long & giving such benchmark songs, they feel that new music directors are not worth giving chance.

New music directors like sachi-jagir, Ajay-atul or even Sajid-Wajid for instance, may be they feel they ain't doing justice to music.

I love how Wajid sing himself as he do a fab job in it, jalwa, dhadang dang, he was superb in them...

At the end, These Oldies have to mix with new generation's demand as when they were at peek of their career, it was also a new generation only.

Yup it got me last year.

Not that I don't like it but it's like taking great chances away from people who can sing better.

Eg. Shankar Ehsaan Loy - has Shankar as singer in majority of songs. Ram Sampat & Amit Trivedi too, while the famous duos Vishal - Shekhar & Sajid Wajid has singer and mainly sings for what they compose. Last year both Vishal and Wajid sung over 6 songs each. Come on. I like both their voices but rather prefer older voices.

I love his singing too.

Especially Dhadhang Dhang, Love Me Love Me, Pandey Jee Seeti and Humse Pyar Karle Tu but there's many songs like RIght Now, Mukhtasar and Tose Pyaar Karte that could have had better singers for those such songs.
