Yes HAHK opened up overseas markets in a big way. First Indian film to do massive business there and make trade take overseas market seriously. I've heard it was the first Bollywood film to celebrate Golden jubilee run in some overseas markets.

Exactly, the movie was well received abroad so some trying to undermine it makes no sense .People should give credit where its due. even kjo goes on how its the biggest hit and admits to it being inspired though I was a kid when it came out but heard on its craze overseas,

I don't think family has gone out of fashion.
If the trend was brought back in 90s then in 2006 Vivah which was a blockbuster despite any huge star. And nowadays good cinema is well accepted.

And yes indeed true that 2002 to 2005 was heavily affected by piracy

vivah was a exceptional !!!! bt i dunt think so huge family drama lyk hum saath saath hai...can work nw!!! coz already audience has the overdose of family dramas in tv!!! comedies masala movies works big time nw!!!!

When Baghban came, there were already so many family dramas despite all with Big B as poster, film was huge success. And family's play the major part in films collections and with big stars they'll definitely go for it.

Vivah was in same category. Infact no major Family Drama has tanked ever. Plus today, movies with messages work, and family dramas always have served the right. We should wait Barjatyas next

Might have modern day setting like Vivah but mainly filled with Traditions.
Sooraj won't try too modern like MPKDH. He will fill it with, culture, celebrations and family value. Doubt it will have multiple leads. And plus Rajshri usual like Alok Nath, Anupam Kher, Reema Lagoo, Himani Shivpuri and Satish Shah will most likely be in it. Sooraj said it in his recent article. Genre is Romantic/Family Drama.

How much does Salman is responsible for this much craze?

To be fair enough, I'd give credit to the film's theme and treatment more for its success than only its stars (though Salman's MPK also did really well in whatever overseas territories it was released).

The traditional Indian values, ethnicity and culture made people lap it up. Old Indians got nostalgic while the young were fascinated. Indians abroad also used HAHK to make their kids connect to Indian culture and values.

Even the servant and pet are like family in this film. It's all happy, dream-like setting with ideal Indian values.

Overseas audience connected with their roots through HAHK I believe.

HAHK is my fav followed by MPK & HSSH.

You know which was last successful family Drama if we take out Vivah?
