Rating: 2/5 stars (Two stars)

Star cast: Arjun Rampal, Chitrangada Singh, Vipin Sharma, Deepti Naval.

What's Good: The beginning of the drama; the music.

What's Bad: Some of the performances; the confusing script and mixed emotions; the ending.

Loo break: Several in the second half.

Watch or Not?: Inkaar is a love-revenge saga gone wrong, but it's not worth the effort.

User Rating:

Two heavyweights of an advertising agency are at loggerheads; and it's not just about a piddly position or raise, its sexual harassment. Maya Luthra (Chitrangda Singh), the National Creative Head of an advertising agency, has accused the CEO of the company, Rahul Verma (Arjun Rampal) of sexual harassment. In a bid to avoid mud-slinging and keep its name from bad press, the firm gets social worker (Deepti Naval) to try and solve the crisis along with some other senior members of the agency. As both sides tell their side of the story, here's what we get to see.

As a young and brash copywriter, Maya gets taken under Rahul's wing not just for her looks and personality but also for her ideas. It's just a matter of time before they hit the bed and things start to go wrong. Maya finds herself being the butt of jokes in the office for sleeping with Rahul, while he sees Maya getting too possessive about him (though he isn't even her boyfriend). Frustrated, Maya moves to Delhi and then to New York to better her career and to get away from her too-familiar co-workers.

Once back, things start to get even worse. With her new boyfriend in tow, she nabs the position of National Creative Director, gets on the company's board and even gets the biggest clients of the company. Rahul obviously isn't too happy about this. The duo end up spending most of their time butting in each others' affairs than getting any work done.

Where does this lead to? Is this a clear case of sexual harassment or is there more to it? Who will be forced to accept defeat?

Arjun Rampal and Chitrangada Singh (Inkaar Movie Stills)

Inkaar Review: Script Analysis

The movie starts off well but Manoj Tyagi's script just doesn't click. Even the beginning of Maya and Rahul's love story doesn't sit well. So when it further hurtles into a disaster, it makes even less sense. Though it's unheard of for CEO's to sit through creative briefs, presentations or cracking a campaign, you see Rahul doing all of it. Why the heck do they have a Creative Director then? And why does Rahul have so much of a say in almost every aspect that the Creative Head is supposed to handle? The sloppy research is disappointing. Just flinging keywords like 'alpha male', 'ambitious woman' does not make good research.

The characters themselves are so confused that they make even less sense to the viewer. One moment they're fighting it out in a boardroom, the next moment they're making out in the bathroom. The climax is the nail in the coffin. Forget trivializing woman harassment, the lengths to which the writer goes to make the ending happy/vague is when you reach your limit.

Inkaar Review: Star Performances

Who would have thought that Arjun Rampal would actually tower over Chitrangda Singh so effortlessly. He plays the role of Rahul with a quiet pride and seething rage that looks very believable. But Chitrangda is a different story altogether. Bipolar, childish and edgy is not her cup of tea though she looks darn hot. Most of Maya's character involves flicking her hair enough times to make you wish that the National Creative Head would invest in at least a godforsaken pair of hairpins.

Vipin Sharma stands out for his witticisms as Gupta. Deepti Naval makes an honest effort, but she looks so lost and confused that's it's a wonder that she's called out to help a sexually harassed official.

Inkaar Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects

The director Sudhir Mishra does his brave bit to salvage the movie. It's a confusing story and script get a little salvaged in Sudhir's able hands but it's as good as getting an umbrella in a flood. Shantanu Moitra's music is very good and goes well with the lilting moods. Sachin Krishn's cinematography is good.

Though Sudhir uses Kurosawa's Rashomon effect of unreliable narrators, technique does not lift the movie from its flaws.

Inkaar Review: The Last Word

Inkaar is a stylishly done movie that has very little else to offer in term of acting or performances.

Inkaar
By Taran Adarsh, 18 Jan 2013, 08:07 hrs IST
The moviegoers have developed a taste for innovative, out of the box stories. Topics that were once considered taboo are being attempted on the Hindi screen. Pushing the envelope within commercial parameters is the new mantra. Known for attempting diverse stories in film after film, Sudhir Mishra takes on a hitherto untold topic for his newest venture INKAAR: Sexual harassment in a work environment.

A film like INKAAR is extremely relevant, topical and relatable in today's times. Sexual harassment is a reality and one needs to address it. We ought to discuss it -- with students, with grownups, with working men and women, within and outside organizations. One has to be vigilant, on the guard against those indulging in it and getting away scot free. The ones who endure harassment are often scared to come out in the open, fearing that it may ruin their personal/professional life.

INKAAR may revive memories of DISCLOSURE [Michael Douglas, Demi Moore] and also Abbas-Mustan's AITRAAZ and Madhur Bhandarkar's CORPORATE, but INKAAR depicts the clash of egos most differently. Beneath the sexual harassment issue that it addresses, there's a love story that comes to the fore during the culmination of the film. However, the writing isn't watertight this time. More on that later!

At one of India's leading ad agencies, the battle for the top job between Rahul [Arjun Rampal], a venerated advertising CEO, and Maya [Chitrangda Singh], his ambitious protg, takes a dramatic turn when she files a sexual harassment complaint against him. It's the job of the committee set up by the agency to hear both sides of the story and work through the layers of lies and accusations to find out who's really telling the truth and who's lying. The stakes are high because only one of them [Rahul or Maya] will walk away with their reputation intact. Will the committee really be able to uncover the truth?

INKAAR is a tough film to make and one must compliment Sudhir Mishra for sticking his neck out. Let me add, INKAAR is not just about sex. It's about greed, ambition and power play. Generally, in a majority of Hindi films, it's the man who seeks sexual favors, while the woman is projected as someone who's meek. But the woman here is shrewd and spiteful. When the two sexes collide, what the spectator gets to see is not just the issue that the film raises, but also the games the ambitious play to reach the top spot.

Mishra is a sensitive storyteller. At the same time, he's a director's actor. Given the subject matter, INKAAR would've turned into a sleaze fest, a cheesy film, but the director handles the provocative moments elegantly. However, like I pointed out at the outset, the writing is gripping in parts, not in its entirety. A few episodes are engaging, but a couple of them lack the hammer-strong impact. Besides, the screenplay should've been exhilarating and engaging towards the resolution. Also, the track of the father [Kawaljit Singh] is a little difficult to comprehend. What was the writer trying to convey in those scenes? Dialogue are incisive, razor-sharp and acidic, depending on the situation.

INKAAR succeeds in bringing out the right emotions from its actors. Arjun Rampal displays remarkable understanding of the character. Post CHAKRAVYUH, which released a few months ago, this is yet another power-packed performance that makes you realize that this supermodel has transformed into a super actor. Chitrangda immerses herself into the role brilliantly. She uses her lustiness in a wicked, dominating way and that's what catches your eye. It's great to see Deepti Naval after a hiatus. The film has a collage of talented actors, which includes Vipin Sharma, Mohan Kapur, Asheesh Kapur, Shivani Tanksale, Gaurav Dwivedi and Rehana Sultan [cameo] and each of them stands out in his/her respective part.

On the whole, INKAAR is for spectators of serious cinema. Caters to a niche audience!

Critics Reviews

DNA India | Aniruddha Guha

Everything about Inkaar tries too hard to stand out in the most obvious manner – Sachin Krishn's cinematography is made up of a liberal display of style without it really complementing the story in any way. Editor Archit Rastogi's editing, similarly, is unnecessarily flashy in most places. In a pre-climax sequence, for example, the two protagonists have an intense, one-on-one talk in a washroom, the light of which annoyingly flickers repeatedly. The desperate attempt to create mood is ruined by the fact that it comes across more as a gimmick than a tool used to help narrate better.

Alongside such howlers, the acting doesn't hold. Rampal's good at the snide, sardonic ex, recalling how he taught small-town Maya it's not "Channel" for No. 5. His nasty-tasty Rahul makes some mark but the same can't be said for Maya. Despite all that lovely make-up and the luscious hair, we just don't get enough sense of Maya's tightrope tangle between ambition and passion. But we do learn a lot about the corporate world presented here, where everyone gargles with whisky, throws up frequently and inappropriate office behaviour is necessary to pass the tedium of selling toothpaste

I started by applauding 'Inkaar', because it is so rare to see men and women, adult men and women in Hindi cinema. Mishra's better films have always attempted to give us characters who are not perfect, who are trying to get by, trying to get on, and still be people we can empathise with, without them being infantilized.

NDTVMovies | Saibal Chatterjee

It becomes apparent that this simply cannot be an open-and-shut case. Involved in it is a tangled web of masculine possessiveness, vaulting ambition, sexual jealousy, intra-office shenanigans and deep emotional complexities that cannot be deconstructed in simple terms.

Nowrunning | Mansha Rastogi

What works against the film is its climax which turns out to be a complete tangent to the sexual harassment theme bound by the cliches of Bollywood. A probable resolve to the building case could've worked better. It's also the length that's a deterrent and a long stretched two part narrative of the situation which goes on almost right till the end. Neither does Sudhir Mishra let the love story breath nor the fierceness of the crime failing to leave an impact on the audience.

Arjun Rampal at first appears like he is aping SRK to the 'T'. Slowly he moves from that mould and comes into his own. He gives a human touch to his character. Chitrangada Singh handles the scenes with maturity and comes across as a real 'bi***' out to ruin Rahul. Like Arjun, she too feels the character she plays.

But unfortunately, the story loses steam with the plots revealed in a jiffy. What confounds you further is the climax which tends to take a route you might not have envisioned. It strays from the topic of sexual harassment and lands on a track which makes you feel tad cheated. There isn't a clear takeaway at the end of this drama. Mishra doesn't let the romance pick up and neither does he let the gravity of offense impact the audience.

Even so, Inkaar, with a running time that's little above two hours, starts out with promise and engages considerably until the plot hits a massive writer's block and transforms into an exasperating Alice who's lost her way and been kicked out of Wonderland. The upshot is a climax so moronic, it's easily one of the worst I've seen in recent times.

Director Sudhir Mishra's story and taking is simply superb. The strong issue raised in the movie is something that makes the viewers feel attached. Arjun Rampal is sure a lot of fans with his influential and energetic performance. The actor does pure justice to Rahul Verma and shows what it is like to be a head of a big company. He looks elegant and shows clever variations in his powerful character. He is especially good in the post interval episodes. Chitrangada on the other hand manages to make unconscious the audiences with her realistic performance. She looks stylish and luxurious at the same time and carries the whole film on her shoulders. Second half of the movie is highly fascinating. The climax, even though is very interesting, could have been more verbal. First half is a bit slower when compared to the second.

Mid-Day India | Janhavi Samant

The biggest problem area with Inkaar, and most films revolving around workplace issues, is the portrayal of the female protagonist. For such an ambitious woman, Maya is shown to be a clueless trainee, remarkably insecure about her own rise, a paranoid leader, and prone to frequent emotional outbursts in work situations. Another problem area is the many brazen generalisations about scorned women, how flirting is natural when beautiful men and women work together all hours of the day, the fine line between camaraderie, flirting and harassment. Maybe a little more time in an actual office observing day-to-day dynamics between colleagues of the opposite sex or interacting with mature women professionals would have added a little insight to the plot. One expected more maturity from a Sudhir Mishra film.

Sudhir Mishra deftly plays with the greys in this story steering clear of any form of titillation. He addresses stereotypes that exist in every work environment but at the same time doesn't reinforce omnipresent Bollywood stereotypes like a compulsory gay character or ambitious women with no morals. While the story switches between the perspectives of the two lead characters, the director manages to step back and remain detached to the extent that his portrayal is in no way biased towards either sex.

RECOMMENDED
India Today | Vinayak Chakravorty

It also makes the point there never are absolute villains in life. Inkaar isn't about telling us who is right and who is wrong. It is about exposing how cut-throat power trips in a given workplace can take a toll on the value system and emotions of people concerned.

60

RECOMMENDED
Bollywood Life | Prathamesh Jadhav

Mishra takes you back and forth as he narrates a beautifully layered story with clinical precision and incredible tautness. As Maya cries of sexual harassment and Rahul denies her claims, Mishra intensifies the drama by giving some overlapping, but consistently balanced and believable viewpoints. He tries to draw the dividing line where flirting stops and sexual harassment begins, and also sheds light on the power equation that can turn an innocuous act into a potentially harming situation. He also questions how far we can go, in today's age of fierce competition – in the name of professionalism – to achieve a distant dream that contradicts our moral values and leaves us emotionally hollowed and vulnerable. All these things and more make Inkaar a must watch!

70

RECOMMENDED
Sify | Sonia C

The very talky film will disappoint those who, led by the promos, came to the film looking for titillation. On the other hand, those looking for an arresting drama that seriously explores sexual harassment will also be unhappy. What saves the film are the performances and the sizzling chemistry between the pair. Perfectly cast, Arjun Rampal and Chitrangda Singh have what it takes to make these very urbane characters come alive. Unfortunately the writing doesn't do these characters justice.

40

NOT RECOMMENDED
Zeenews | Ananya Bhattacharya

The film is shot in a stream of consciousness sort of a mode with the camera flitting from the conference room to the memory of the protagonists. At times, a single scene is played on the screen more than once – to denote the differences in the perspectives of the ones describing it – dues ex machina that Mishra has very beautifully used.

70

RECOMMENDED
Wogma | Meetu

I especially enjoyed Arjun Rampal's performance. He brings in the perfect amount of nonchalance to Rahul Verma's demeanour - the kind that a calm, confident man would carry to make you believe that he is not in the wrong. Chitrangda Singh does nothing special except that she looks chic and just right for her part. I absolutely loved Deepti Naval's act - charming, witty, naughty and curious all rolled into one. It's a shame that ultimately her character seems like a cog in the wheel.

Inkaar First Day Box Office Collection

Inkaar has collected around 1.5 crore nett all India on Friday at the box office. Film started poorly in Morning and remained slow through the whole day. There was not so much of buzz among the theater moviegoers before the release of the film. But collections like this sends shockwave to the film industry in the opening day itself.

Inkaar stars Arjun Rampal and Chitrangada Singh in lead roles. Film has received mixed review from the audiences.

First day business of Inkaar has shown that even if the film gets good jump on Saturday and Sunday still it will do below par business in the Opening Weekend. Only saving is if Inkaar generates big jump on Saturday and further big jump on Sunday, which will save it from being flop at the box office.

INKAAR Heading For Complete Washout

As we reported in last few days in our prediction and collection report, "Inkaar" is heading for washout at box office. Film collected poor 1.65 cr nett on Friday and thing snot looking bright from here onwards.

Film continued to suffer humilation on Saturday and at places last week's release MKBKM was doing better. Film will not find any takers from Monday onwards for sure and weekend collections will not cross 6-6.5 cr at max.

As per early estimates, film should collect 1.90 cr nett on Saturday taking film's two day total to 3.55 cr nett. Even a great Sunday of 2.5-2.75 cr nett can take film to 6.25 cr nett and that is a pathetic number considering the high decibel promotion coupled with 1000 screen release.

Below are the collections for the film -

Domestic Collections
