His fan following is huge..Just cause Salman and SRK have bigger fan following doesnt mean that Aamir doesnt have huge fan following..Media started praisng his BO power only after Ghajini I guess and that is fair..He has been great at BO after Ghajini..He is anyday way ahead of the other two so called superstars..Some of his movies like Lagaan, TZP, 3I, RDB created history. Although SRK and Salman's movies earned more they never got appreciation like Aamir's movies. Some of his movies will be remembered forever. His movies mean quality. BO records in 90s was not good but his performances were..I know that this topic is about his BO numbers only but if people can bring other superstars and belittle Aamir then I guess its also fair to talk about quality..All he cares about is to do his work with perfection..He doesnt run after success unlike the other two superstars and doesnt keep doing the same type of movies..Success runs after him. He is an all-rounder and not just a superstar but also one of finest actors unlike the other two.
I did not want to touch this topic because it was a different debate altogether. Still I'd clear up some stuff before you for a fairer debate.
You claim SRK/Salman movies never got appreciation like Aamir's movies. I guess you're forgetting the appreciation received by MPK, HAHK, DDLJ, CDI, Swades, Dil Se. In case of SRK, even his much derided Devdas has been part of several international best films lists and was recently included by TIME in greatest movies of millennium list. His MNIK might have got less appreciation in India but it got lot of appreciation in Muslim countries where audiences related to its concept.
Salman's MPK and HAHK single handedly redefined movie business and set trend of family oriented sagas in 90s. Even Adi Chopra admitted parts of DDLJ were inspired by MPK and HAHK. DDLJ is the only Indian film in 1001 movies to see before you die and was second only to Sholay in BFI's poll on Greatest Bollywood films ever.
Swades and CDI have also had really good impact, won awards and appreciation.
Just because other stars have their image larger than life so their good work, its impact tends to get less noticed.
SRK did Darr, Baazigar, Anjaam - total anti hero roles which were considered anathema for any actor aspiring to be a lead hero. Yet he succeeded with them. I mean even he was versatile and tried different stuff. For that matter, Salman Khan is the only star who had guts to play an AIDS patient onscreen (Phir Milenge) whereas other mainstream stars haven't even dared to do films around this subject.
The only thing which no other star has is an Oscar nomination. But no one else apart from Aamir, has that except Raaj Kumar and Nargis - whose Mother India was first Indian film to get nominated in Oscars! That Oscar nomination colours an ENTIRE career, does it?
Some members here brought up other Khans' mention but it's not just about comparing with them. It's overall.
People claim Aamir doesn't run after success, then what is Dhoom 3? Or what were Ghajini and Fanaa? They were as commercial as it gets and not quality or pathbreaking stuff from a mile!
You claimed he doesn't do same type of films. In 90s, he mostly did lover boy roles till he started doing variations with Earth and Sarfarosh. Since Lagaan he has mostly done social/youth issue based films or action/romance like anybody else. Though it's true he's done more variation post Lagaan than he did in 90s.
But some people try to discount 90s completely and base all judgements on post Lagaan reinvention.
All rounder stuff is always debatable. Salman had also given hits in romance, comedy, action, drama in past. Only now he's stuck to masala. SRK had also given hits in romance, drama, action, anti hero stuff etc.
I did not want to discuss acclaim or stature of other Khans films. But it seems people here are hell bent discussing other Khans only.
