Friday, 7th December 02:40 PM IST KHILADI 786 Takes An Average Opening "Khiladi 786" released today across 2750 plus screens all over India. As expected, film opened to mixed reports and largely average reviews from critics as we predicted few days back. Film will depend on word of mouth to grow in coming days. Film opened to poor responses in Gurgaon, Bangalore, Mysore and other high end multiplexes with around 25%-30% opening. But UP, Rajasthan, CI and CP were on higher side and Delhi, Mumbai and East Punjab were average. Overall film is average and should look to grow in evening as it can not just depend on Saturday for growth being a single screen film. Film has to collect at least 38-40 cr nett over weekend in order to justify its mammoth release and star cast. As per early estimates any figure in excess of 10 cr nett on Day one will be a good figure. |

Ya, watched it, here is my reviewhttp://www.india-forums.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=3331059&TPN=5
Debutant director Ashish R Mohan's masala potboiler style is unmistakably reminiscent of his guru, Rohit Shetty's films. There are flying cars, flying bodies, flying fists and a flying Singh too. He shows flair for comedy, but for a film titled Khiladi', it lacks hard-core action, heat and the adrenalin rush that is synonymous with Akshay's Khiladi series (maybe intentionally). With a feel of hip-hop, rap, rock and our good 'ol Burmanda, Himesh's music pumps life and energy into the story.
Direction is another field that the film lacks. While there is enough action in the beginning and in the end, the director seems to have get lost in the middle, where he resorts to mindless comedy and not-so-funny jokes. From flying cars to screeching brakes, from broken sets to airborne men…it's very obvious where Ashish R Mohan gets his training from. What one expected was for him to rise above the Golmaal series and present a good action comedy. Unfortunately, he fails to do so.
Debut director Ashish R Mohan does try, but everything becomes dim and dull because of a really weak script, with unacceptable dialogues which are constantly in bad taste, and a single-finger synthesiser which is utilised for filling in as background score.
After playing Assistant Director to so many of Rohit Shetty's films, director Ashish Mohan finally gets his moment, and he holds it up well. He reflects many of his mentor's traits with the over-the-top action scenes and flipping cars. Strike Three and Himesh is not out. As music director, Himesh gets the tone perfect with the rustic drums and trendy disco songs. While some of the songs do nothing more than lengthen the film, the music is just right. And Himesh can laugh at himself too; you see Akshay holds his nose and lip-sync in a particularly nasal O Baawariya!
Debutant director Ashish R Mohan who seems to be hugely inspired by his mentor Rohit Shetty shows promise, as people and cars fly quite convincingly in this film. He shows off his comedy streak to some extent but for a film titled Khiladi, it lacks hard-core raw action, what people usually expect from Akshay Kumar films. Himesh's music works big time for a relatively weak plot.
There was great potential here - the successful Khiladi franchise, the A-list cast, good music and so on. But debut director Ashish R Mohan makes a film that's a diluted, washed-down version of several such films.
The film even has ample blowing up of cars and fight sequences. Ashish R Mohan truly is Rohit Shetty's protg. Light-hearted references to recent hits like Rowdy Rathore, Housefull 2 and Singham along with Himesh's lively music pump in additional energy into the film.
Ashish R Mohan's debut takes its time to start off, but soon finds its tone and pace right. If it weren't for a couple of songs and some thoroughly unnecessary plot twists (say with Johny Lever, Bharati Dubey) towards the climax, the film would have been much more enjoyable. The Azaad (Rahul Singh) track is really hilarious and so is Mithunda as the Marathi don. Asin looks grumpy throughout. Why 72 Singh falls for her is a complete mystery. But Himesh Reshammiya is the true surprise of the film, displaying great timing and cheer.
That Akshay Kumar as an actor is an exceptionally talented one has been proved time and again – given the man has a decent story to perform in. Not this one, though. The genre of action is the Khiladi's forte, goes without saying; however, when it remains in the realm of the real. One single man taking on more than 200 goons and flattening them single-handedly – come on, haven't we had too much of that already? When Akshay Kumar isn't beating people up or thinking about Asin, which – by the way – hardly happens, he isn't bad. Asin's Marathi mulgi act is overshadowed by her tomboyish side; but when faced by solid patriarchy in the form of her brother, she hardly has anything to do. Her acting is good, but not one that deserves a standing ovation. Mithun plays off the stereotypical elder-brother-worried-about-sister's-wedding well.
In short, it is another outright assault on the senses. The comedy is crass, the acting borders on the slapstick, and the general air that hangs over the film is one of utter lunacy. The loudness is accentuated manifold by an ear-splitting background score.
Director Ashish R. Mohan, erstwhile Rohit Shetty assistant, clearly believes that playing by the numbers is that all one needs to do in order to rustle up a laugh riot.
That reminds me, there must be a story. Himesh Bhai plays a wedding organiser's son, who is no good with fixing matches, so his father kicks him out. To redeem his image, he tries to get a don's daughter get together with a fake cop. The dialogue writer probably got paid per word, so when the cheques stopped coming in, he decided to repeat himself. Most similar movies give the hero a stock phrase or "takia kalaam" for audience recall. This one has almost half a dozen. We keep hearing the same lines being repeated over and over again
The script seems to be written by someone who loves Akshay Kumar's humorous heroics and his emphatic but spoofy hijinks. Both the traits are amply accentuated in the script. "Khiladi 786" ultimately becomes a showcase for its insanely successful superstar hero's talents. Akshay, as we all know, loves to play the Punjabi Devdas. He did it effectively in Vipul Shah's Namastey London, where he stepped back gallantly to let his wife Katrina Kaif make a fool of herself with an undeserving boyfriend.
This week's new release Khiladi 786 had a mixed opening across the country with some centres opening on a decent note while others on an average extent.
At some single screens of UP and the nearby circuits, the film took a start of about 75-80%. On the other hand, some of the Delhi multiplexes opened to a poor occupancy of about 30-35%. East Punjab, which is considered as a stronghold market for Akshay Kumar, surprisingly didn't open strongly.
Akshay Kumar in a still from Khiladi 786 Movie
The film has bagged as good as around 2750 screens that should most probably help the film to make a good business at the Box Office.
