I love the people associated with a film: Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan is back to his favourite genre ' romance
Although his last offering successfully rode on the Diwali wave, it got mixed critical reviews. But Shah Rukh Khan says he chooses films not just for the sake of prosperity and posterity. King Khan needs something more -- belief in the director and the crew involved in a project.

Over the past few years, after doing films such as My Name is Khan, Don and Ra.One, King Khan is back to his favourite genre -- romance -- with Jab Tak Hai Jaan. However, the actor maintains that he usually chooses his movies on impulse but doesn't take his job or stardom for granted.

"I totally love the people associated with a film. I remember when Ashutosh (Gowariker) came to me with Swades, I was keener on doing Jodhaa Akba but he asked me to be part of this film as he wanted to dedicate it to his father. I instantly agreed. After all, he's one of my earliest friends from the industry and I believed in his vision for Mohan Bharghav," he reminisces.

A similar backdrop resonated with his decision to make Chak De! "My dad loved hockey and I played the sport very well too. So, although I had to sport a beard, with a dozen unknown girls and no songs to lip-sync, I agreed to the idea. It turned out to be wonderful."

When asked whether there will be a sequel to his first big screen superhero venture -- which was a commercial setback for him -- SRK sounds rather optimistic. "I won't rule out the possibility because Ra.One could become a franchise in the long run. We might call the second film Ra.Twoor something but we don't have a script yet so we'll have to hold on to our thoughts here," sums up the actor-producer.

But that's because the "dozen unknown girls" happened to be talented, serious actors. Not 2 lbs (cause they can't weigh more than that) of dead weight in a ton of makeup. SRK wasn't forced to carry the whole film alone nor to "be" the plot because aside from his charm was wasn't one.
Maybe he should let himself be the KNOWN quantity and surround himself with talent again.

He sounds so excited... But my dear Shah, when will it reflect in your film choices again? :(

Of late SRK's attitude has been try and try till I succeed.
@Himani: He has listed all the wrong reasons for choosing a film.

Shreya, generally that's a good attitude...except in Shah's case it's more like...I'll keep doing this until you have no choice but to like it. 🤔

And yeah, his reasons for selecting films are all wrong, no wonder those reasons aren't working so well anymore. I'm wondering now if KHKN is the only film he did because he genuinely loved the script..

😆

I think he did read scripts in the early part of his career. The script reading stopped IMO with the influence of people like KJo who keeps harping on family ties with the whole of Bollywood.

SRK's biggest problem is that he lives in an ivory tower surrounded by chamchas and close friends. He no longer has any connection to reality like he did in the early days. There is no one to say he's doing something wrong. There is no one who will give honest opinions on what kind of movies he's doing. He doesn't get to meet any regular people that he can understand the kind of things they like or interest them. His movies show that he's having a hard time figuring out the pulse of the audience.

Very well put and very true indeed.

Shahrukh has a MAJOR problem with stepping outside his comfort zone of the Johars, Chopras etc. He even admitted in his interviews that he likes working with people who praise him after the shot as opposed to ones who shoot something and then move onto the next shot without any comments. Its almost like Shahrukh needs that positive reinforcement from others to reassure himself that he is doing well. Everyone around him who he supposedly calls his "friends" are just a bunch of yes men, none of them are honest (or dare I say, they don't have the guts to be honest with Shahrukh) because they are scared they won't be in his good books anymore. Shahrukh needs to step back and evaluate his approach to choosing films. Friends, long term associations, emotional bonds are important but he has to burst this bubble he lives in and look to work with different people regardless of the fact that he does or does not know them personally, whether they are new or old, where they stand in the industry etc.. He can continue to do meaningless crap with YRF and Dharma but it will ultimately lead him nowhere because even if they earn crores at the box office, they are not earning him any goodwill from the critics, the general audience and (a certain section) of his fan base. Chak De, Swades seem more like happy accidents if anything because I cannot fathom how his choices in recent years have been so extremely wrong and how he has suddenly lost out on so many good roles and movies that he was supposedly offered (i.e. Munnabhai, Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots).

Nothing is going to change unless Shahrukh decides to go beyond his boundaries and make the right decisions, and the more he continues to be surrounded by people like Karan, Farah and the rest, the harder I see it will be for him to make smarter and better choices :(

I did not read the article. Its too long and I dozed off after the first line or two. But I agree with the headline. SRK does need a better strategy if he plans to stay in the game, the lacklustre response to JTHJ should be a wake up call for him. As of now, Aamir and Salman have swept past him...even someone like Ajay who was nowhere close to SRK's stature only a couple of years ago is doing better it seems. SRK comes out with one or two movies a year and that too with something that's neither here nor there. IF he wants to do quality work, do quality work. If he wants to play to the galleries, then play to the galleries...but he can't do a hodge-podge film and expect it to win people over. Its not gonna work that way anymore. The fact that all kinds of films have started working well at the theaters in recent years is proof that audience wants something new. The same kinda pretentious formulaic work does not wow the audience anymore so he needs to sit down and re-think his strategy. Either do masala films or do quality films...that's what he needs to decide.
