Just came from watching SOTY! This review is full of SPOILERS! So read at your own risk!
All the supporting actors are excellent...especially both the Kapoors👏...Rishi and Ram! Rishi Kapoor as the flamboyant, pink-wearing, part stand-offish, part warm Dean was on top of his game as always and Ram Kapoor totally nailed the part of the cold, sarcastic, ruthless father with elan! The coterie of friends...especially the girl who played Shruti and Sudo (played by Boman Irani's son) were spot-on! Farida Jalal in a rather short cameo was heartwarming like always! Sana Saeed looked really weird and I still can't believe that she is the same cute kid who played SRK's daughter in KKHH!😕 Ronit Roy suits his role to the T as the muscular Sports Coach who is the Dean's object of affection!
The story is actually non-existent...but then Karan Johar's films are never high on script ect! Though, I have to say, he somehow manages to keep the emotional quotient of the film very well entrenched...despite all the glitz, gloss and general superficiality, you somehow still end up connecting with the characters. KJo really knows the audience pulse and for every over the top designer song and dance sequence, he will alternate it with an under-stated emotional scene, that will melt your heart into a puddle! Mine sure did!😳😆
For example...during the wedding sequence...the dazzingly electric and fast-paced 'Radha' song was complemented so wonderfully with the silent interactions between the trio...it was such a genius of a scene. Siddharth just owned this scene...I loved the way he expresses with his eyes! The boy has given all the models a good name for a change! Here is one, who can act...and act really well!
I loved all the scenes between Rohan and his father...the exchange of barbs, the bitter words and the subsequent anger and hurt reflected in Rohan's eyes...Varun really brought out his character's vulnerability in these scenes!
Also, all the scenes between Rohan and Abhi were really good. Frankly, the film seemed more like a bromance and very less like a romance! Alia seemed more like a kabab mein haddi between the two adorable men😆...and I am sure everyone in the audience was hoping for both the boys to dump Alia's character and get together! They totally rocked the screen with their on-screen chemistry and matched each other's acting prowress.
The falling out scene between Rohan and Abhi was amazingly well-peformed and well-written! The war of words followed by punches and accusations...infact, it was one of the most realistic scenes in the entire film! Varun was superb with his expressions and dialouge delivery! (The only jarring part was Shanaya's breakdown...Alia looked hilarious in the scene and wasn't at all convincing as a girl who is emotionally wrenched between two boys!)
The entire Triathalon part was totally engrossing and really fast-paced, though the treasure hunt was stupid to say the least!😕
The last flashback scene...when Rohan refuses to accept the trophy and Sudo has a meltdown was rather vague! 😕 I don't know what point Karan was trying to make! That competitions are bad? That people should not compete only because they are friends? Or was he trying to make a case point for the pressure that kids go through in school? Whatever! And what was the deal about blaming the school principal for all their woes? Lolz...😆 So random! (Btw, Ram Kapoor's expression in this scene were outstanding! Another actor who emotes so well without the aid of words!)
The climax was nice, though OTT! I liked the interaction between Shanaya and Rohan and how he still flirts with her, despite the fact that she is married to Abhi now! I particularly loved it when Shanaya tells him that she listens to his songs, hiding it from Abhi! It was really cute! 😆
Amongst characters, Rohan Nanda is the clear winner! Karan has written his character with a lot of heart...and you just can't help but falling in love with the brattish yet soft-hearted young boy, who never lets go of his loyalties till the very end!
Peformance wise, as I said earlier...impossible to choose between Siddharth and Varun...they were both equally good.⭐️
Story: The tracks are ready and the race is on. What's at stake? Love, friendship and the coveted 'Student of the Year' trophy.
Movie Review: It's KJo-Wala Love! Served fresh and piping hot from the Dharma college canteen of romance. And it's a high (class) school that you'd never want to miss a lecture of, ever. Except that it has its own set of Karan rules. Read the prospectus: 1. Leave your text-books at home but ensure you're carrying your designer bags and heels. 2. Drive a Ferrari to school, or if you're poorer, take a bike. 3. Dating, mating, separating and love lessons shall be part of the syllabus. 4. Girls, don your shortest minis, and guys, rip off the shirts. Welcome to St. Teresa's. Rest assured, it'll be a well-rounded entertainment experience.
ST is run by a happy and 'gay' Dean - Yogendra Vashisth (Rishi), who drools over John Abraham, and when he sees the much-married hot coach ( Ronit Roy) usko 'coach coach' hota hai!. The hotshot student of the school is rich brat Rohan Nanda (welcoming Varun Dhawan), who zips around in his hot-wheels, flirts, and dreams of being a Rockstar. His childhood sweetheart, another super rich kid, Shanaya (super filmy intro, Alia! Alia! Alia!), is Ms. Popularity and Drama Queen (don't miss the red pout) known for her brands and beauty. Enter (grandly) Abhimanyu (Sidharth), a middle-class boy with mega dreams, a chalta-phirta KBC (Mr Know-it-all), and the in-house Milkha Singh.
There's a typical rich-poor division in school, the Richie Rich Tatas v/s the bechara gareeb Batas. But with Abhimanyu's entry the competition heats up - With both boys showing ample abs & attitude (teeny-weeny trunks, for all you drooling women!), chasing the same gal (Shanaya), and aiming for the same trophy - Student of the Year! Their equations from friends-to-foes changing quicker than their school grades. Their muscles rippling more than their egos; the competition gets tougher and the boys - leaner and meaner. Their loyal friends adding chaos to campus - Eg. Tanya who tries everything in the 'date- bait-book' to seduce Rohan (including push-up bras); the Parsi 'Pseudo' - the 'minority report'-card in this bunch; Jeetu - Rohan's chamcha; tomboy Shruti - Shanaya's other half (minus her designer do).
This is what we call grandiose debut(s)!!! Karan's definitely swooshed his cane for this one. The trio has done him proud and has set a high 'bench-mark'. Varun expresses and emotes with superb confidence and storms the dance floor with swag. Sidharth stands equally tall, has amazing screen presence and is man of few words and many smouldering emotions. Alia wins your heart with her cuteness, effervescence and naivete. Yes, she reminds you of Kareena's Poo days (with all that oomph), but she comes into her own. The chemistry between the three (even outside the lab) grows on you.
Shabhash! SOTY's supporting cast is brilliant, each have favourite subjects and score high in those areas. But the star who scores a straight A-Plus is undoubtedly Rishi Kapoor - simply superb. The other guy who can take a bow is the director.
The film is full of KJo-isms - it's larger-than-life, colourful, lavish, beautifully shot and directed. With medleys, dance, drama and everything good-looking (from cast to couches, dorms to discos).
Vishal-Shekhar have caught the right beat with this high-school musical, and the songs are as fresh as the leads. The story is simple and entertains throughout, though it's not the first time this marathon of an idea has run past the screen. 'SOTY' takes you back to your books and sinks you in true-blue Bollywood syllabus, following the 'formula' - Two boys, one girl, one glorious trophy and lots of testosterone.
If this one doesn't pump you up with nostalgia, it's time for you to go back to school already!
Tip Off: You may not like this movie if bubble-gum romances, picture-perfect worlds and candy-floss clouds are not your idea of a movie-going experience
'Student of the Year' is a romcom that narrates the story of two friends who compete in the game of life on school grounds. (SUPPLIED)
It would've been more apt to title this movie 'Dancer of the Year', instead of 'Student of the year', because that's what Karan Johar's pretty students do the most. They break into a jig at the drop of a hat.
From extravagant weddings to snow-clad mountains, to funky clubs, to almost anywhere, they invest every waking hour in matching their steps to a host of remixed, old Hindi film classics.
At KJo's new school, it's only the dance moves that count, and nothing else.
Textbooks, sports and any other extracurricular activities, barring the one that touches the heart, are sidelined and pitched towards the fag end of the two-and-a-half-hour race.
And, when the lads aren't dancing, they are busy flaunting their chiseled bodies, making even John Abraham's 'Dostana' hotpants appear a tad too timid. The lass, meanwhile, is allowed to highlight her shopaholic streak, while perfecting her pout and dainty aura.
KJo has upped his style quotient from his first classroom romance in 1998 ('Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'), with iPads, Louis Vuittons, Mercs and Ferraris. Even his students appear far more stylish than the three gawky ones in 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. It's only the story that's the pitfall.
He's unable to lend credibility to a story that's awfully muddled. At one point, he ambitiously tries to make another sports drama, along the lines of Mansoor Khan's hit movie 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Shikander', where an underdog goes on to win an intra-school cycling trophy, only to return to his comfort zone of innocent, candy floss love.
Writer Rensil Dsilva fluctuates between time frames in his screenplay to evoke some element of suspense, with four college pals narrating the incidents that lead to the 'student of the year' honour. The suspense, nevertheless, isn't as impactful as the kids would have us believe.
We are told that St. Teresa's school, also tipped as St.T, is a highly elitist school that reserves exclusive access to the rich brats and a motley bunch of middle-class kids, whose parents aspire to benefit from their affluent association.
It is this unwritten, classist divide that a new kid steps in to alter in 'SOTY'.
Despite initially locking horns with the wealthy, Abhimanyu Singh blends right in and befriends the school's most pompous brat Rohan Nanda. But his inability to stop his heart from skipping a beat for his pal's loaded lover Shanaya Singhania creates a rift in their friendship.
The conflict leads them to race each other to the finish line for the top award.
Keeping with KJo's tradition of inane love tales, his latest doesn't spring any surprises. It does, however, throw some shockers like how his students partake in a mindless treasure hunt while bidding for the student of the year. Cracking inane Hindi riddles surely doesn't tickle the grey matter, does it? And how, he gives every male bonding a 'Dostana' connotation.
Of the three newcomers, Siddarth Malhotra appears the most confident and exudes effortless charm. But KJo doesn't allow him to test his acting chops, so we don't really know if he's worth it.
His on-screen buddies, and star kids, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt are nothing exceptional. While Alia steps into Kareena Kapoor's 'Poo' glam doll image, she isn't crackling as the school hottie. Varun, despite flexing his muscles, doesn't quite pack the punch.
Veteran Rishi Kapoor is delightful as the eccentric school principal, who parades pink sunglasses and ties with panache. Even the talented Ram Kapoor and Ronit Roy step in, briefly, in a script that doesn't allow them to explore their true potential.
Boman Irani's turbaned cameo is strictly for the gags, and he walks away with the twisted line; "Coach, Coach Hota Hai".
Surely Karan Johar isn't eyeing for the 'director of the year' with his new, love fest, making this yet-another pretty movie that will make little, or no, impact on us. So, for those who were unable to digest 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', this one would clearly remain beyond their comprehension
