This film is nothing what I had expected! Actually, it was 10 times more entertaining and fun compared to what I had expected! Kjo again proved that he should never under estimated!
Lets come on the three sparkling debutants of the film
Alia- her character wasn't properly crafted but still she looked great. Acted gracefully. People didn't have much expectations from her but after seeing the movie, I can say she has long way to go! She is such an adorable girl, surely made me go awww... But yes she would win any award!

Sid- Didn't have much expectations after seeing the promos but after seeing the movie, it wouldn't be wrong to say he was simply mind blowing. He was great in romantic scenes and emotional scenes, carried off that attitude in great way! Can say that he will be the next romantic superstar

AND VARUN- he was just amazing! He is great in emotional scenes and does great in his role of Rohan, would be unfair to say that he has indeed good amount of chances to win best debutant award! Not only him, Sid has great chance to! But what works in his favour is great detailing in his character and sympathy he gains at end! And not to forget, he dances like dream!

The supporting cast is equally amazing! Sana Seed is hot and sexy but disappoints, expected more! Kayoze is sensational, great comic timing!
Mansi is natural and actually I liked her the most from the supporting cast even though, her character Shruti left me confused! Sahel and Majot are also convincing!

And THE RIshi Kapoor - hats off! He is such a versatile actor! Loved him to bits.. Tough gay characteristic in dean was unnecessary
Ram Kapoor should do more movies! I didn't like Ronit Roy though

Kajol was gorgeous and beautiful in her cameo

Highes <spoiler>
Scene in Rohans brother's wedding where only music is playing! Ahh the actors Sid , Alia and Varun have done a great job in emoting with their eyes and expression! It also shows excellence of Kjo direction

When Farida Jala dies! That's sad

I like the introduction of all characters!

Loved way they used 'papa Kenya hai' , 'gulabi annkhe' , 'dafli wala' and shanaya! Awesome

The last scene was also perfect ending

The music is great! Hats off to Vishal and Shekhar! All songs are my fab but must sa Kukkad is growing on me so addictive

Choreography - Wohooaa!

Misses

The love story was incomplete
Shanaya s character leaves you confused! With whom she is in love
Gay characteristic of dean
Speech at end and Rohan not accepting trophy like why?
And why was Rohan angry still after 10 years because of his love or because of his trophy?

Final verdict
A film that will surely not be film of year or will earn Kjo director of year but its film you should surely not resist yourself to see! 3.5/5

Saw it!! So pleasently surprised! It's a sweet, fun film with a lot of gloss and big songs to keep you entertained!Man oh man oh man...how HOT is Varun Dhawan?!! Boy can act, dance, emote so well...not to mention that hot bod! ☺️ OMG IS SCRUFFY BEARD AT THE END...*DEAD*. Varun has such a charming screen presence, he brightens the screen! He did so well as the bratty but loveable Rohan and made you feel for the character. It was the best and most complex role in the film and he rocked it! I didn't seem like his first film at all! I hope to see him in many more films...future superstar along with Ranbir 😎
Sid did well too! He is intense and has a great voice. His role was fairly simple and he was very good. I did feel that Karan was biased...gave Sid the 'hero' role, an entrie song ((Kukkad) and made his character seem mahan. SPOILER: However, I felt for Rohan more than Abhi, especially when Abhi doesnt appologize when he kisses Shanaya 🤔. I also which the part where Abhi loses on purpose wasnt needed...I felt Karan made Abhi a 'perfect' character. Anyways, I thought Varun was more impressive than Sid, but that doesnt take away from the fact that Sid was good.
Alia is cute and pretty...i was shocked at how one-dimentional her role was...I saw a few interviews where Karan kept emphaiszing how it was a bromance film but I didn't think Alia would be just a showpiece! 😲 She didn't have much to do...just flutter her eyelashes and look pretty, which she did! That one scene wehere she had to cry wasnt the greatest...oh well bacchi hai :P
I loved Rohan and Shanaya's chemistry, their bickering was cute! But the love angle of the film was a loophole...you don't feel that Shanaya loves either of the boys,, SPOILER: The fact that she quickly moves from Rohan to Abhi made no sense...she was confused then just choses Abhi, but their lovestory was so random, they should have shown more on how she actually fell in love with him, this was too rushed..
Rishi Kapoor is funny, lol the gay angle was a bit over the top in some scenes but he wasm uch better in this than Housefull 2 :P Ronit Roy and Ram Kapoor are good too!
SPOILER: The ending was a bit weird...Shanaya seemed confused over who she liked again, she was flirting with Rohan lol 😆 I felt Karan should have made Abhi-Shanaya as gf-bf if he wanted..but not married, that was odd for some reason. VARUN'S BEARD DESERVES ANOTHER MENTION ❤️
3.5ish out of 5 from me! A fun film and we get 2 new awesome studs who can act!

i think the bromance was more important than the luv story so the abhi-rohan frndship bonding competition rivalry frndship again was more important which was shown beautifully
the shanaya-rohan or shanaya-abhi thing was just there but not the focus point and since we were clearly shown abhi shanaya loved each other so marriage is the obvious conclusion after a 10 yr leap

Just saw the film... The story wasn't new... It was the same old collage types ka ghisa pita story line... Nothing special...
The actress wasn't super great... She looks pretty descent but the acting needs a lot of work...Infact, her role is not a great part of the film... She is just there to fill space and she's just there for the sake of having a female lead, otherwise she was all glamour and nothing else.. The males were both amazing... In fact, Varun and siddharth are the only reason to watch the film... But, Varun does get extra points for his super dancing skills... Felt bad for him because technically he gets nothing in the end... He loses even after he wins...
Everything was waaayyy tooo larger than life to a point where it was not relatable... There was literally only 2 staffs in the entire school... The sports teacher and the dean/ principle... Overall average, nothing extra ... It's definatly not as grand and amazing as the reviews suggest... The guys were the savior of the film... The songs were great but the story was sooo clich... Definatly not as good as KKHH , MNIS, and K3G... Ok film... U can go see it in theaters but I suggest you wait for the DVD or if you suggest going to the theaters, it's a one timer...

Alia: pretty but she is the most confusing and spaced out character... There is technically no significance in her character other then the fact that she contributes to the boys splitting ways...

Sid: BEAUTIFUL and more than expected... He emotes with his eyes... Acts great and expresses well. The dancing needs work... During the film, he came off as a jerk in many places but you never hate him because he has his point of view...

VARUN::: I personally felt he was the best... Acts well, dances amazing, looks GORGEOUS, witty and funny dialogues,

Spoiler...

You feel really bad for Rohan(Varun) , because he doesn't get anything at the end... Even if he wins the Compitition, he doesn't take the trophy because Abhi (Sid) let him win which is why he is still mad after 10 years because abhi let him win, which made him look like a loser.."..

Even though Rohan has parents and Abhi doesn't, you feel bad for Rohan because nobody loves him... His dad thinks he is a loser and is happy to see him lose... And also, he doesn't get love... He loses Shanaya... Even though they keep saying he never loved Shanaya, at one point in the movie, you can really see him falling for her... So at the end, you just feel bad bad for him...

Question... Why were there only 2 staffs in the entire school????? And how does Abhi become a investment banker and Pseudo become a lawyer when clearly this whole school was about glamour, sports, and dancing???? There wasn't academics involved at all except briefly during Ratta Maar... Otherwise I was confused??????

3.5/5

I watched the pirated print last night. Typical KJo candyfloss galore. But I somehow felt that he rode too much on his capability to create candyfloss and underutilized his capability to tell a decent story. It was entertaining, no doubt, but where was the 'competition' for life? The whole Student of the year competition felt like an elongated episode of Legends of the hidden temple and some EA or Ubisoft racing game on the silver screen 😕 That particular aspect completely fell flat.

What worked (surprisingly, because it wasn't publicized at all) was the bromance between the two leads. The relationship was genuine, warm and identifiable. I loved how the entire track was sketched out. The romance track is non existent. It shouldn't have been there at all in the first place. It seemed forced and boring. Varun and Sid were good respectively. I liked Sid a tad bit more but that is probably because I liked his character more. I love subtle and intense characters and he did justice to his role. Varun scored in the emotional scenes. The vulnerability of his character shone through his performance in some of the scenes brilliantly.

Alia was such a waste. Her character was such a waste. Role chhota ho, par accha ho, tab toh dekhne mein interest bhi aaye. But what was this? Glossy intro + Radha song + Ishq wala love song + Ping pong ball characteristics = Alia's character. No background, no build up, no engaging personality. Wonder why both Rohan and Abhi fought over her so much 🤔 Besides she looks like a freaking kid! someone send her back to a real boarding school ASAP. She isn't old enough to be prancing around in a bikini. It was just...disturbing. LASTLY, she can't act at all.

Supporting cast was good. Rishi Kapoor and Farida Jalal were the best. Music was nice too. Although I still hate ishq wala love (and by some horrible twist of fate the song is topping all charts in India ) Velle is my favorite. Film should have been a little shorter. Or maybe it was just the bad print.

2.5/5

Student of the Year Review 3.5/5
  • Really really really enjoyed and liked #SOTY it's not a perfect film but still liked it a lot 3.5/5
  • Varun is the clear winner for me he was fantastic Sid did really well too but Alia surprised me the most
  • I knew the boys will do well but Alia really was good even if her role didn't had much depth the girl can act her dialogue delivery was fab. And she can dance( it's not an easy thing to dance with a legend like Rishi Kapoor that too on his Popular song with so much confidence and owning the stage go alia now i know why Karan chose you out of 400 girls it was the confidence the i give nod amn attitude) let's see how she does in more substance oriented roles but yes I can see her doing well.
  • Siddharth has the charm and it works he really impressed me esp in intense scenes.
  • But but varun OH MY GOD he was perfect in every frame be it dancing, fighting , romance and he just steals the heart.
  • The supporting cast was really good as well esp pseudo(boman irani's son i don't know his name) tehe
  • t's not kjo's best neither is it the best youth film there are tons on loopholes in the script still overall I liked it caz let's face it We all missed the extravagant , grand, stylish, Lavish, lil cheesy films I know for a fact I did I was craving for such a film. It's good to have it once in a while and that's really the only thing which separates SOTY from usual teeny movies.
  • The story as we all know was predictable right from the 1stpromo so I really didn't expect some twist thrown in we knew what'll happen
  • The remixes of old songs were really good and fitted in so well.
  • And coming to friendship, youth movies I still prefer Znmd, wus, more but Rohan abhi's friendship wasn't any less either, It's just that I think kjo. Could have given a little more depth to the relationships with their families and also to the love triangle which could have taken the movie to just another level but not bad either.
  • I mean the love story just didn't worked well with me doesn't matter if It's Rohan shanaya's or abhi shanaya's as in it was handled so casually we never saw any depth in both the couples esp in abhi shanaya at least with Rohan shanaya we had the background that they knew each other from childhood and were a couple from 4 years and just were having problems from a year but abhi shanaya i just did not feel that they were given enough importance as in their love story it was in an instant. That ishq Wala love wali feeling Nahi Aayi it was more like friendship wali feeling fior both the couples still few sequences are beautiful. Special mention of the shadi seq with just the music so many feelings it was brilliant.
  • I'd say go watch it you'll enjoy it but don't expect it to be some sort of trendsetter film.I am sure of is I am going to watch this on my bad days for sure
  • And boy varun dances like a dream actually all 3 except Sid looked awkward in Radha but the rest even he was equally confident.
  • More than the story I think it's confidence of all 3 onscreen that works I forgot midway that they are newcomers.
  • Dimpy, pseudo and jeet & dean were hilarious
  • The following contains their best and weakest scenes acc to me so Read it at your own Risk

________________________________________________

  • I felt varun's confrontation with his dad was the weakest but than his final confrontation with abhi the best.
  • sid's silent crying when dadi is sick & chachi taunts him & ro hugs him his strongest and his weakest is matt jao dadi.
  • alia'a strongest is when she yells at boys & the instrumental weak the promo dialogue Pom Pom Wala.
  • Shanaya falling for abhi in 2 secs was just Like W*F happened that needed time and also after her breakdown and telling both the boys clearly that she's done with them there's nothing that explains how she went to abhi and why she chose abhi over rohan when she was Really in love with rohan and it used to hurt her when rohan used to give attention to other.

Student Of The Year Has Decent Weekend

Monday 21st October 2012 11.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Student of The Year had a decent grossing around the 25.25 crore nett mark. The film grossed around 7.50 crore nett on Friday, 8.50 crore nett on Saturday and around 9.25 crore nett on Sunday.

The film opened pretty well and showed decent growth over the weekend but some centres which should grow for this type of genre did not put up the sort of growth they should have.

Overall the film has done fair business all over. Even belts like CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan are decent but the places which should have out performed like Mumbai, Delhi city, Punjab and Bangalore have not done so and also remained average over the weekend.

Watched it.. nothing fancy.. sooo many loop holes.. but here goes my essay 😆

SPOILERS

Story:
Sooo cliche.. So many scenes where you know ahh this is going to happen.. very evident.. a very very weak script.. nothing that binds it together..The love stories why were they even there? The movie could have done just fine without the actress.. they could have just fought over the trophy and disappear the girl everything was good.. The relationships were so weak.. Rohan likes Shanaya but he takes her for granted.. Shanaya doesn't like him she's just there because she doesn't wanna break her relation and that she has known Rohan for so many years.. Abhi okay I guess he falls in love with her but at the end I felt bad for Rohan he might have ignored Shanaya but it came across as he loved her..so something lacked in the movie how I put it.. movie mein Namak kam tha shayad tha hi nahi 2/5

Actors: They are all new so keeping that in mind.. they were not bad or horrible.. the supporting cast was stronger than the leads I'd say.. esp the guy who plays Jeet, Pseudo, Shruti, Ronit Roy etc.. the only most annoying part was Sana Saeed.. good that they didn't promote her.. she was soo stupid.. OMG..😡 but still the others were pretty good so 3/5

Varun: he's a very good dancer I must say.. he needs to work a lot on his dialogue delivery.. his expressions kinda stay the same too sometimes..His transformation is good.. He improved some in the 2nd half but the first half was umm quite a drag so he gets a 2.5/5

Siddharth: He was middle class no? how did he afford Puma jackets, expensive phone etc? I wonder 😆 Chachi keeps taunting about how he asks for money but bhatija wear Puma in such ghareebi.. wah waah..😆 anyways he was a very simple character and he was pretty weird when in the end he asks Shanaya as to why was she hugging Rohan so tight.. what the fudge dude she's your wife now 😕 His voice is a lot like Arjun Rampal but he dances so bad.. disco deewane song when him and Varun are having a solo side by side he is wooden.. his diction is bad too.. not as bad as It looked in the promos but bad.. he talks fast.. very fast like Emraan Hashmi.. but Emran Hashmi's hindi is clear Siddharth has a Punjabi accent plus he has a heavy voice so it's hard to understand what he is saying..but he is not such a bad actor.. if he kinda works hard he would be just fine so he also gets a 2.5/5

Alia Bhatt: She's cute but she has all the potential to be Katrina Kaif part 2.. her expressions in the songs and dances were as if she was forced to do everything.. I don't have much to say about her she was not that much present in the movie anyways.. all together she had a 30 min role maybe 😕 she was so not needed.. but anyways she's very confused character too.. I didn't like how they developed her character.. she gets a 2/5

so over all it's a half baked movie maybe quarter baked or 2/3rd baked 😆.. you might enjoy with your girl friends if you wanna drool over the boys..😆 or just want to pass your time.. don't expect anything at all so it won't disappoint you.. the movie had way too many loop holes.. Why was Rishi Kapoor even gay? there was no need at all.. why was Gautami Kapoor there? she's not needed too.. Ram Kapoor is his usual self.. School kids are allowed to drink in the vele song? they are having tequila shots? they have perfect sculpted greek God typa bodies in the young age and surprise surprise none of them looks like a school kid 😆 Student of the year has nothing to do with academics AT ALL.. IQ test umm yeaahh and that too only one... bring a date to the prom else you'd be eliminated never heard that ever not even in Canada.. was it dancer of the year? swimmer of the year? Athlete of the year? soccer player of the year? No it was supposed to be a student of the year so math, english, science something.. yes, no, maybe so? okay..😆 so all that being said you can still watch it once.. I'll give it a 2/5 I was with my friends and we were laughing, joking, commenting maybe that's why I didn't mind it so much.. Had I seen it with my sister or all alone I would have given it a 0 😆

Just saw the movie..I really enjoyed it.

The story was alright..nothing exceptional..there were certain parts in the story that made you go hmmm..but, there were way too many positives for me so such negatives didn't really matter.

Let me start off by saying..it was SO refreshing and nice to see such promising newcomers - Siddharth & Varun. They were both awesome. I really can not decide who was better with their acting. They both did very well in their respective roles. In terms of screen presence, charm, personality..I think Sid wins all of that hands down. He's such a good looking guy..I was surprised to see how the promos didn't justify that at all. lol..Nonetheless, I found him to be very mesmerizing. I couldn't help but smile throughout all those scenes where his character silently gushes over Shanaya. This guy can really emote through his eyes. I felt so lovestruck... Call me biased, but Sid really knows how to express through his eyes..and I was kind of surprised by that. I was hoping he'd be good..but he actually exceeded my expectations. I think you tend to feel bad for his character during the first half and then during the second half..you feel bad for Rohan.
Moreover, Varun's such an awesome dancer..I couldn't help but notice just him during the Disco Deewane song. & then during Vele..he was just perfect with his moves too. You do end up feeling more for his character since his dad's just unnecessarily such a jerk it's just weird..😕..overall, Varun was really good...but I expected Varun to be good..maybe because I could see that in the promos, and since Varun has been more hyped with his performance (probably because of his character because honestly, they both were good with their acting)..but Sid actually surprises you a lot. I went in hoping he'd be good..but he was really good. His acting is more subtle..and yes, I do think I have this crush on Sid after watching the movie.

Alia - She was alright...surprised how she has such a small role. 😕..She REALLLY reminded me of Kareena from her early days. There's also some resemblance facewise I feel..or maybe it was just me? Nonetheless, she wasn't as good as the boys..but it doesn't really matter because the story isn't really about her..so you're like meh, whatever the guys were great..that's good enough. 😆 She's cute and pretty though..however, she seems too young in certain scenes..like way too young.

Sana Saeed - OMGGG..wth? her makeup, outfits, basically EVERYTHING was just so horrendous. Her acting wasn't bad...but wow..she looked more like a s**t than a supposed high school student. She has horrible screen presence too.

Rishi Kapoor - I LOVEDDD him. I thought he had brilliant comic timing..and though the same old addition of a gay character in a Johar movie..Rishi Kapoor carried his role so well. His character really helps you enjoy the movie thoroughly.

Everyone else was good too in their respective roles. I though all of the other students who made it to the top in the competition were very good as well...especially the heavy guy, with glasses. Forgot his name, lol..but he was great..although his confrontation scene with the dean in the end is crazy weird. So far fetched and not needed.

Music - AWESOME. The album took a while to grow on me..but the more I listened to the songs over the past month or so..the more I started to like it..and personally, loved watching all the songs captured the way they were in the film.

Direction & story could have been a bit better..but as mentioned before, I liked so many things in this movie that I can ignore the flaws. 3.5/5

Student Of The Year Holds Well On Monday

Tuesday 9th October 2012 10.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Student Of The Year held up well on Monday as it collected in the 4.25-4.50 crore nett range. The film was aided by Durga Pooja holidays in the East so collections there were not much lower than Friday while in some other parts of India there was a holiday for Maha Ashtami.

The film has grossed around 29.50 crore nett in five days and Tuesday and Wednesday should come out with strong collections as it is a part holiday for Maha Navani on Tuesday and a full holiday for Dussehra on Wednesday.

The first week collections of the film should be around 40 crore nett and they could even be higher if Wednesday can show a really big jump.
