'Barfi!': India's Oscars entry draws copycat flak

India's entry for best foreign language film at next year's Oscars has become the latest Bollywood movie to draw flak for allegedly plagiarising foreign hits in a 'mash-up' of ripped-off scenes.

" Barfi!" has won over critics and cinema-goers for its portrayal of a love triangle between a deaf man named Barfi and two women, one of whom is autistic -- not typical subject matter in the prolific Hindi-language film industry.

But since its release two weeks ago, several videos have spread through YouTube and social media sites highlighting a number of scenes that appear to draw heavily from international classics.

Film buffs spotted stark resemblances with clips from Gene Kelly's hit " Singin' in the Rain" (1952), Jackie Chan's " Project A" (1983), Buster Keaton's " Cops" (1922) and " The Notebook" (2004) starring Ryan Gosling among others.

The plot has been likened to "Benny & Joon", the 1993 film starring Johnny Depp, while the soundtrack has drawn further comparisons with the musical score from "Amelie", the 2001 hit starring Audrey Tautou.

One of the clearest sources of inspiration is Charlie Chaplin: one scene shows Barfi dodging a policeman through a sliding door, just as the king of silent film did in 1917's "The Adventurer".

"Barfi!" director Anurag Basu has hit back at critics, saying the film is intentionally paying homage to Chaplin in a similar way to "The Artist", the black-and-white silent film that won Best Picture at this year's Oscars.

"If I would have changed the shot, twisted things around and made it my own it would have been stealing," Basu told in a TV show.

"I did shot-to-shot because they are famous iconic shots and scenes from famous masterpieces, every filmmaker knows them."

Bollywood has come under fire before for remaking Hollywood flicks in the Hindi language, but "Barfi!" is under particular scrutiny because the movie-mad country is yet to win an Oscar in the foreign film category.

"So why would an Oscar jury pick a movie that reminds them of the very many movies they've seen before -- and which include films that are now Hollywood legend?" asked an online magazine.

In one of several earlier Bollywood copycat rows, US studio 20th Century Fox submitted a $1.4-million claim in 2009 against BR Films over "Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai", alleging it was an illegal remake of "My Cousin Vinny". The case was settled out of court.

Image consultant Dilip Cherian worried that entering "Barfi!" into the Oscars could cause embarrassment for India in the long-run.

"The fact is that critics will start wondering at which stage does plagiarism end in Indian movies and at what stage is it inspiration," he told.

Only three Indians films have been shortlisted in the foreign film category at the Oscars: "Mother India" in 1958, "Salaam Bombay!" (Hello Bombay!) in 1989, and "Lagaan" (Land Tax) in 2002.

Manju Borah, who chairs India's selection committee, defended the latest choice.

"We selected 'Barfi!' because of its treatment and freshness," she told the newspaper. "In any case, every filmmaker is inspired by some cinema."

Film critic and curator Meenakshi Shedde said an "affectionate tribute" to world cinema, such as "Barfi!", was not the same as stealing someone's ideas -- but she doubted for other reasons whether the film was the best selection.

"The criteria the Oscars look for is something uniquely Indian. Something that offers insights into the culture or society," Shedde told AFP.

Never heard of that movie. All I can recall is a Kavzamrit TVC with this song played as jingle 😆

Notebook is a Hollywood movie.I am sure most of the critics(the likes of Taran Adarsh,Anupama Chopra,Rajeev Masand) do watch English films as they review them as well. I am surprised none of them came up with the similarity during their reviews for Barfi.

EDIT:Oops, the critics did find out similarities.Sorry for the wrong information.😳

Yes,the announcement of the film going to the Oscars definitely benefited the film and lobbying can't be ruled out at all.Nobody can be trusted these days in Media. However I still feel people are making a mountain out of a molehill with the national shame, etc.I really don't expect Barfi to even get selected for the foreign language category but its kind of disappointing that there were better films without any plagiarism charges which could have been sent instead of the film.

I am not sure about the national shame part. 🤔
But yes when you are competiting at an international arena you send your best even if that best maybe worse than another country's worst. Thats better than sending plagiarized stuff. I think this is the first time there is a hue and cry over the Oscar entry. Mostly people dont even know which is the movie that made it. But more than anything else timing of the announcement is fishy especially since Barfi is still running and the announcement was bound to have a positive impact on the collections. Chances of a Oscar nominations are really low but chances of Barfi collections benefitting from the announcement was really high.

Well, I hope all this attention on the plagiarism stops the National Awards from going back to the ridiculousness it was a few years back--I was worried that perhaps they would see all the positive reaction to Barfi and...

And a more far-fatched hope, perhaps the people who decide what to send to the Oscars will stop with their idiotic decisions and entries.

Rave reviews not with standing, there have been allegations of plagiarism levelled against Barfi! Not ones to take these lying down, director Anurag Basu and producer UTV have swung into damage control mode. Anurag defended his turf saying,"It's very difficult to make original cinema and I take a lot of pride in saying Barfi! is original.

It baffles me why people are not appreciating the original plot, screenplay, characters and situations. The other films that are contenders for the Oscars are really good films. I am very privileged to be in that group. I paid homage to the films and filmmakers that I grew up watching.

Martin Scorcese and Quentin Tarantino have done the same. Does that make them thieves? Great moments of cinema that you've watched through the years, stay with you and come out in your work. It doesn't mean you're copying anyone. Thank God The Artiste was not made by an Indian. If it had been, it would have never been nominated for the Oscar, let alone winning the award."

UTV on their part have decided to maintain silence over the charges ever since Barfi! was selected as India's entry for the Academy Awards. A close friend of Anurag told TOI "UTV has decided to completely clamp down on all responses to these charges. Anurag and the film's cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana D'Cruz and even the supporting actors have been asked not to respond to the charges as that would automatically eliminate Barfi! from the Oscar short-list.

Anurag is not denying similarities with films in the past. He has paid homage to Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keatan but hasn'tcopied them. Scenes similar to films that Anurag grew up watching are bound to crop up, just like Martin Scorcese's Hugo had scenes resembling moments from a 1951 British film The Magic Box and the 1923 silent film Safety Last. The Artiste which last year won the Oscar for best film was accused of being a complete rip-off."

The friend pointed out that Barfi! has travelled to festivals all over the world and still hasn't been accused of lifting scenes from past films. Besides, Anurag has maintained that Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin are his sources of inspiration even before the film's release.

It baffles me too, Mr. Basu...it baffles me too...in their keen desire to rip the movie apart in anyway possible, most ppl won't bother appreciating the original plot/screenplay/characters in anyway...

Anyways, I think Barfi was a brilliant movie, the likes of which we probably won't see for quite a while again and I will always cherish it😊

Exactly...Barfi has been running for almost two weeks now and no one bothered if its copied/inspired/plagiarised...whatever...but all hell breaks loose when its nominated for Oscars...all research and allegations start...where were all these people when Barfi was released...if all this hullgulla was done before...maybe Barfi wouldn't have been nominated...and they would have nominated some other movie..is there any use of crying over spilt milk...all its going to do is bring shame ...nothing else..

Because we're used to plagiarized songs and films on national level. We just laugh at Pritam, Anu Malik, Sajid Khan and move on. But we don't want to be shamed on an international platform.

Also, Basu's unapologetic defense is pathetic.

But now we will be shamed and are being shamed at the international platform...the time to question.accuse/blame has all gone bye bye...the ball is not in our court anymore...
