Actually, you could even argue that EVERY film, every piece of art is manipulative in a way...because obviously it's made to make you feel a certain way..and you're being pushed towards that feeling. Only nobody calls it that because obviously the word itself is very negative.
What makes films different it the treatment they give it. The intentions of the person making the film. Basu did not make this film to make us feel bad for differently abled characters. Its very clear he made it to entertain an audience, to make them happy. So yes I guess he was trying to "manipulate" us into feeling happy...to simply make us believe in this dark cynical world. But you know what I say? It's better to make me feel happy than to make me cry buckets of tears for how "bechara" differently abled people are. Or give me a massive headache in an attempt to forcefully make me laugh with some python biting someone's crotch. 🤢

well madhur bhandarkar told the story of Heroine. but whether
audience feels sympathy, or revulsion or apathy for her
depends on the individual.
similarly anurag made barfi the way he envisioned him
and told the story the way he wanted to; whether audience
feels barfi is a smart ass, loveable, to be pitied is upto
audience.
no manipulation. the story of a deaf mute but lively
fun loving boy usually evokes smiles. thats natural.
if the story entailed a deaf mute boy ill treated by his
parents, it would evoke feelings of sadness for the
boy. and that would come naturally too.

I haven't watched Barfi yet..but I stopped reading this article after the writer started criticizing Barfi's dressing sense...that made no sense whatsoever.

The article is shoddy...

i dunt think the movie is manipulative because it didnt milk the "disabilities" of the protagonists for any kind of sympathy (most of the times),
it did have other flaws though...like a few scenes which i thought were unnecessarily stretched (like the suspense angle)...the non-linear narrative wasnt really necessarily and i think it could have worked much better with a simpler narrative structure...i found bits of it too indulgent aswell with all the homilies...

thankfully, the performances, the technical finesse and some moments save the day.

ROFL. what does that even mean in bollywood. take it scene for scene, but in all, I will see the film for ranbir. bollywood lacks creativity at times. maybe they need to stop being on the internet so much. 😆

well in this case, some scenes were copied and the others were more like a "tribute" or possibly a coincidence that they were so similar to other movies...
