^ wuuuttt 😆😆

I didn't care for the story of that movie but I love it cuz it reminds me of my childhood.

The simple days <3 Good ARR music (I'll be honest.. I really, REALLY miss his 90s stuff. Rockstar somewhat disappointed me), Aishwarya was beautiful.. I'd get to watch the movie with my parents..

haye, I miss them old times so much.

Films like Barfi and Kahani get get made in hollywood/other foreign countries every friday. They don't have the Indian essence...there is nothing unique about them. If you pay attention to the pattern, the foreign films that are nominated and actually win all have something unique in them...things that are the essence of the countries they represent. Kahani and Barfi hold a more universal appeal but in a pedestrian manner...at least in the jury's eyes anyway.

Paan Singh Tomar on the other hand, is a real life story about an Indian man and his adversities...that's goldmine in and of itself when it comes to international awards. Additionally, the story is told and acted out very realistically. How Paan Singh overcomes his hardships, represents India yet is treated like shit by the government so has to resort to rebellious ways...all these things are the harsh realities of India and they are packed in very neatly in the screen play...there are no loose ends. The film hits you and it hits you hard. It was over all a very poignant film. Both Irrfan and Mahi did a fabulous job as well. Plus, Irrfan has done foreign films before so put in some lobbying and it might have actually stood a chance. But with Barfi's entry, India is just making a mockery of itself just like it did couple of years ago by sending Paheli and Eklavya (may be not as much)...but it is definitely a stupid decision. There is a difference between a good film and an Oscar worthy film. Barfi is the former but not the latter.

If they did not want to send PST, they could have sent any other regional film...regional films lack the gimmicks associated with bollywood films and are usually good and tolerable (although I have not watched any in the list). Barfi is a bad decision. It won't even be shortlisted forget nominations.

Though personally I liked Barfi but wasnt Barfi inspired by several films from Hollywood and other film industries. I dont think it really has a chance to make it into the top 5 let alone win.

@Bold: I agree with you completely. If we look at the past the only three Indian films that had been officially nominated in the foreign film category were Mother India, Lagaan and Water. All three of these films were rooted in Indian culture, and, more importantly, they adhered to the stereotypical notion of India prevalent in the western world. Barfi will possibly look too familiar to the Oscar jury, too western, too far removed from the colourful and exotic potpourri that they would be expecting to see...and also perhaps a little wannabe because of all the references to the American silent films.

i hv no idea what kind of movies actually win the oscars, i think
a war one about Bosnia won once and Life is Beautiful type
i dont know wht was Amelie abt. So Paan Singh might hv had
a shot.
But it gets repetitive these movies about the wronged and war
and strife.
I think the selectors were hugely influenced by the almost
unanimous love the movie instilled in movie goers of all sorts.
The movie seems to have won over all sorts of audience
even ones who normally opt for sex and glamour the way
Raaz and Heroine have been hit by it.
Its got a dose of Indianness in the way Kolkatta is shown
and Shruti and its got the human element which enamoured
one and all.
If nothing Hollywood will get a dose of Ranbir magic and see
that besides Shabana and Irrfan we have our 'actors' too.
