the quality of background dancers have really taken a nose dive. and i blame these producers/directors/choreogrpahers running after western dancers.

they just don't fit in. if you look at bhansali movies, one thing that stands out are the dances, choreography and with that comes the background dancers.
bhansali hardly users western background dancers. its good to see him stay with his roots. i am not saying that we should not at all use western dancers, but making them just pop from nowhere, on a indian tune, especially classical, just looks plain ridiculous at times.

i actually enjoy the backup dancers. especially in those old classic songs/movies. they not only keep up with the rhythm, but also gracefully blend in with the lead dancer.

these days..i agree with you, its a torture to sit thru some songs.

anyways..good topic.👍🏼

The background dancers may have improved now. But the ones in the 90s and pre-90s sucked!

i find no reason why the presence of background dancers should make u embarrassed ...
the tone of ya post sounds rude...calling anyone ugly is bad.and besides their dance is in fact much better than the hero/heroine...

OK, guys. What PuffinHyperpercity said wasn't "completely" wrong. You've got to admit that the whole dance-in-sync with the the background dancers is a completely odd concept. I do agree that Bollywood is an epitome of masala and what not, but you guys also need to understand that they [the ugly ones, that is] distract the audience from the main dancer and create a sense of turn off.

Now, on the other hand, yes, I do agree that today's b/g dancers have improved. For example, in the following videos, certain b/g dancers have actually performed better than the lead dancer. Please take a look. It's left to viewer discretion.

Pathetic b/g dancers. The directors could have used a replacement.

The female dancers in Chammak Challo genuinely grossed me out. 🤢 Not due to their dancing, but their clothing. If you can indeed call it clothing.

Having said that, most backing dancers are there to distract us from the lead actor or actress's awful coordination.

Completely agree with that..Their outfits were terrible and the choreography was equally gross. But compared to the dancers in the 70s, 80s and 90s films, the background dancers in the recent years look and dance much better, in fact sometimes better than the leads 😆
I liked the background dancers in the 'chinta ta' song from Rowdy Rathore. they didnt look great but danced with lot of energy and enthusiasm , complimenting Akshay perfectly, since he is a good and energetic dancer himself.

Yeah! A lot of background dancers are really good!

In this video, the girl to Kareena's left is so pretty! And she's a great dancer too!

And I think its the same girl again in this video at Katrina's right.

And who can forget Shaimak's dancers? I love his dancers! Remember Shahid in Kahin Aag Lage? He's obviously very talented.

What I hate is when they have random white dancers that are purely there because they're white girls and they make them wear skimpy clothes. That's gross. But apart from that, I think background dancers are rather talented people who haven't gotten a chance because they're not star kids.

girl u r mentioning above , her name is Gulnaz Khan
she is lead dancer of Bosco Caeser group
both these videos are choreographed by Bosco and Caeser

background dancers add grandeur and volume to the song...sometimes, the dance looks soo much better when therz a million people doing it in a synchronised fashion...

most club songs and wedding songs need BG dancers anyway...i dunt have a problem with them...
