Salman is an easy target but it was more than that.

Success went to his head. False sense of superiority and an ego the size of a football field. He started treating people like shit and when he fell, those same people returned the favor. The guy backed out of Main Hoon Na at the last minute. He kept Aditya Chopra waiting for 6 months while contemplating on whether to do Hum Tum or not. This is SRK and ADI, two of the most powerful men in the industry. Imagine how he acted with the little guys. Not to mention Salman.

The Industry was going to blacklist him sooner or later. Sallu just sped up the procedure.

Members have already mentioned what went wrong with him. About VO retiring I guess you are over only when you give up. And VO hasnt given up DESPITE that happenned to him over the years.
