Ek Tha Tiger

Producer: Aditya Chopra
Director: Kabir Khan
Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Ranvir Shorey, Girish Karnad, Roshan Sheth
Genre: Romance- Thriller
Ratings : Superb

by Bhawana Somaaya

Story:
In the dark world of intelligence and espionage many secrets are stored for security but some escape the files and become legends. Tiger (Salman Khan works for Research and Analysis Wing, India's external intelligence agency and is always trotting the globe on assignments. On one such mission Tiger meets Zoya and what follows is a tumultuous journey watched and followed by two nations.

What works about the film:
Everything: from the opening frame showcasing credit titles against the back drop of Turkey to the closing shot freezing on a Black & White frame, writer -director Kabir Khan travels his audience through unfamiliar path and constantly surprises them.
There is not a dull moment in the film and for this the credit goes to the writers-Nilesh Mishra and Kabir Khan. The plot, characters and dialogues are completely believable.
The film has all the twists and turns necessary for a thriller and is ably aided by all the technical departments. Julius Packiam's background score is seductively upbeat even though it has a striking resemblance with the background score of Akhtar's Don.
Rameshwar Bhagwat's editing is razor sharp and action director Conrad Palmisano conceives fearless, magical moments on screen. Aseem Mishra's cinematography captures blue seas, brown mountains, orange skyline, magnificent architecture and a gorgeous star pair!
It is a treat to watch virgin locations like Turkey, Canada, Cuba as part of narrative and not just for song and dance. Interestingly even the choreography and the songs are in harmony with the story. Special mention must be made of Katrina's costume by Alvira Agnihotri and the vibrant production design.

Performances:
To all those who have complained that Salman Khan never breaks away from his star image, watch the actor play a RAW agent with sincerity and restrain. He is tough when on a mission, awkward when he is ogled by neighbours, attentive when with his senior, endearing in romantic scenes involving Katrina, anguished when betrayed and fearless when courting danger. Tiger alias Rathore Singh is a character suiting Salman's age and image!
Katrina Kaif always underplays and that is her strength as an actor. She surprised everybody in New York and Rajneeti and Ek Tha Tiger is one more feather in her colourful cap. As Zoya she is mysterious and alluring and manages to affect you in all her important scenes.

What does not work:
Very small things: There is no explanation about what happens to Roshan Sheth and the Ranvir Shorey and Girish Karnad's premise of disagreement is unconvincing.

What's special:
The action sequences are majestic, that Kabir Khan dares to unfold a story untold so far, Salman Khan and most important, the politics of the film! The message was infallible in Veer Zaara and perfect now and both these films are produced by YR Films.

Verdict:
It guarantees a blockbuster opening and house full running for three weeks all over India in single screens, multiplexes and abroad.

The first half was fun, it was also nice but the second half drew my attention like a magnet! I hadn't read a single review but while watching the film, I was trying to predict but the twists made me question my prediction every single time😆

Salman did look older in a few scenes, even my parents pointed this out and I go "dad, he is older than you...it's obvious he looks older now"🤣..and my mom thought Katrina was too lambhi🤣..my mom who mostly watched family dramas also loved the action scenes in ETT...for me this fact says a lot about the action sequences in ETT..anyway they enjoyed the movie and so did I!

Salman-Katrina looked quite good together (I was never ever a fan of them together)...even though I am not a Katrina fan, I must say her improvement as an actress is remarkable...her hindi doesn't sound awkward anymore...she did a great job!! Salman was too much in pain during the parts at Dublin...he did look little older there but he looked dashing elsewhere!!

For a hindi-spy movie, I don't expect any better story than this,...every single cast and crew did a brilliant job...so a thumps up from me and my family to ETT and its team👍🏼

I agree trhe second part was intense and slick. im so happy that i didnt read the twists in the movie as it surprised me😊👏 Had I read it the shock value not be there. I think in the 1st part they wanted to show the lighter and romance side, and second part the action and so on, and the background music gripping. i loved how saiyaara was picturized, I just wished the song lasted longer.
it was good to see the whole versions on lapaata and banjaara👏👏 I saw it twice and in second showing I realized things I missed out on, hope there is a sequel

(Note from SI on why we have two reviews for Ek Tha Tiger: Naveen's review presents a different perspective of the movie from NRI actor Sonny Chatrath's uplifting take on the film. The two writers come from different directions. For Naveen, a movie is more than just a movie – It's a reflection of the nation's psyche, scars and its history. As an actor, Sonny views a movie from an entertainer's 'don't over-analyze' perspective – A movie is just a movie where you go to have a good time in the company of friends and family. SI has no preferences on the two reviews.)

Yash Raj Films (YRF) and Salman Khan must think India is a nation of born losers.

Why else would YRF release this unpatriotic movie directed by Kabir Khan on the Indian Independence Day?

…and know what?

Indians are going to respond with a "Hell Yeah!" in unison by making this movie a big hit and reaffirm Sallu Baba's numero uno status in Bollywood.

The last Salman Khan movie I saw on the big screen was "Karan Arjun" and that was a couple of decades ago.

I maintained a clean record of avoiding his movies until today when I decided to check out if Salman Khan is a Tiger or its more common family member, Pussy.

To my surprise there were not more than 20 people for the 10:45 pm show.

Was it because it was the middle of the week?

Was it because people wanted to wake up early and hunt down Aamir Khan and Abhishek Bachchan who are shooting forDhoom 3 in Downtown Chicago?

Or have they finally given up on Salman Khan?

It is safe to say it's not the last one.

Bollywood Star Salman Khan in Ek Tha Tiger

Story

Tiger (Salman Khan) is a Secret Agent working for RAW, India's intelligence agency.

He has been on deadly missions continuously for 12 years and still thirsts for more.

Tiger's boss Shenoy (Girish Karnad) sends him to Dublin on a mission to observe the actions of an Indian Scientist (Roshan Seth) suspected of selling secrets to Pakistan.

Gopi (Ranvir Shorey) is Tiger's secret aide.

During the mission he meets and falls in love with Zoya (Katrina Kaif), a student and caretaker of the scientist. However, it turns out that Zoya is an ISI Agent from Pakistan and she is stealing secrets from the scientist.

As Tiger decides to follow the heart instead of the head, what follows is a cat and mouse game between Tiger, Zoya, RAW and ISI with incredible twists and turns. This forms the rest of the movie.

The first half of the movie establishes Tiger's credentials as a heroic secret agent and Tiger-Zoya romance.

The second half is all action.

The plot of scientist selling secrets is abandoned midway.

While the plot itself is not bad, it seems Kabir Khan decided not to waste much time on 'trivial' things such as logic and reason and instead focus the attention of the audience on long chase and action sequences. He seems to have a particular fascination for Parkour style action/chase.

I will not write much about the illogical aspects as this is a mindless romantic–action thriller where this is absolutely no effort or pretense on making an intelligent movie.

The following examples should give you some idea:

There is a typical Vijayakanthish scene where a tram is heading full speed towards traffic jam and Tiger stops the tram by jumping on to the roof of the train and using his coat and full power to pull down the rod that gets power from the overhead electric cables! Now, can our Captain do that? ('Captain' Vijaykanth is a Tamil film star noted for his bizarre style of acting and stunts)

Time and again ISI and RAW agents are shown as incompetent baboons. They get so many chances to end the cat and mouse game but they just stand and stare like clueless idiots

ISI seems light years ahead of RAW! While the ISI agent Zoya quietly steals all information from the scientist's computer, the RAW agents are busy finding ways to talk to the scientist

Gopi suddenly starts referencing Zoya as Bhabhi although she is many many years younger to him as per the movie timeline. Since when did secret agents develop impulsive emotional bonding?!? If that is not enough, Zoya's ISI boss preaches to her the virtues of womanhood and her responsibility to safeguard her "izzat"

The lack of seriousness and levity with which Girish Karnad's character Shenoy assigns missions to Tiger seems as if they are playing a game show on TV

Performances

While not much is expected of actors in action thrillers the least that is expected is to keep things credible.

Salman Khan is undoubtedly the Ajith Kumar of Bollywood. Someone with an extreme economy of expressions and remotely recognizable acting skills (Ajith Kumar is a Tamil film star noted for his pitiful acting skills).

After more than 25 years in the industry, Salman Khan still can't dance or speak more than two lines at a time. In the scene where he dances with Katrina, he has the perennial look of a man trying to squeeze out the last few drops of piss.

What Salman brings as a compensation for lack of skills is his good looks and excellent physique.

When your hero has such limited talent how different would the leading lady be?

Everyone knows that Katrina Kaif is no Vidya Balan. So we are supposed to look past her inadequacies and ogle at her long legs and fair skin.

What are the talented Girish Karnad, Ranvir Shorey and Roshan Seth doing here?

They must be having a very hungry family to take up these half-baked second and third fiddle roles. They were all ok in their simple roles.

I don't know the names of the actors who played the Pakistani ISI agents but it seems they were all half-asleep when shooting.

Sajid-Wajid and Sohail Sen's music is passable with a couple of decent songs (Mashallah and Banjaara) but nothing memorable.

Recommendation

What Ek Tha Tiger lacks in depth, storytelling, logic and performances, it makes up to some extent in style, photography, picturization and great locations.

The production values are good, which is a new normal for movies from the cash-rich Bollywood producers.

Another thing that works in Ek Tha Tiger's favor is that it is a clean movie.

No foul language, crude jokes, gruesomeness or vulgarity – a rarity in an industry hell bent on making the likes of Sunny Leone a mainstream actress.

Ek Tha Tiger is meant primarily for Salman Khan fans.

Others, if you are willing to bang your head against a wall and lose some sense then you may also like it.

However, the fact that the movie takes a careful neutral stance between ISI and RAW (and between Pakistan – India) and it has been released for Eid and Aug 15th tells me that the greedy producers are hungry for money from the Pakistan box office and not satisfied with Indian collections.

It also tells us that for these Bollywood bozos incidents like the horrific 2008 Mumbai Attacks are as trifling as gum sticking to shoe.

For that reason and that reason alone I will not recommend Ek Tha Tiger.

NRI Film Actor Sonny ChatrathBy Sonny Chatrath

(Note from SI on why we have two reviews for Ek Tha Tiger: NRI actor Sonny Chatrath's uplifting review presents a different perspective from Naveen's take on the film. The two writers come from different directions. As an actor, Sonny views the movie from an entertainer's 'don't over-analyze' perspective ' A movie is just a movie where you go to have a good time in the company of friends and family. For Naveen, a movie is more than just a movie. It's a reflection of the nation's psyche, scars and its history. SI has no preferences on the two reviews.)

Whenever we think of Sallu Bhai, the first thing that comes to mind is the shirt coming off, and some weird one liners, such as "Itne Ched Karoonga Ki Confuse Ho Jaoge Ke Saans Kahan Se Len Aus '''."

But Ek Tha Tiger was a class apart.

I can comfortably say that I see this becoming a big hit because of our beloved Sallu Bhai.

Ek Tha Tiger is about Tiger (Salman Khan), who is a RAW agent, not uncooked, but Research, and Analysis Wing for those who are wondering what the heck is a RAW agent.

But this agent is different, instead of working behind the scenes like Jason Bourne, or James Bond, he is flamboyant.

He sings in the streets, and fights the baddies in the middle of town for one, and all to see.

Salman Khan in Ek Tha Tiger

Tiger is sent to Dublin to keep an eye on an Indian Scientist, who is suspected of leaking top secret documents to the enemy (Pakistan).

I do feel we should find another enemy now, Pakistan is so 18th Century now. He meets a charming ISI Agent Zoya (Katrina Kaif), and falls in love with her at first sight (This part sounds familiar).

The rest is a roller coaster ride of a story that takes you to multiple countries across the globe, while keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Highly Recommended

I highly recommend this movie, for the over the top action sequences, and one of the hottest Indian Actresses, and the beautiful locations, Dublin, Iraq, Turkey, and Cuba.

The story is not perfect, but who cares right?

This is a Salman Khan movie, and people wait a whole year for him to come up with a block-buster on Eid every year.

I must admit, Sallu, and Katrina still look good together, but our Sallu baba is Jinxed. He can't seem to hold on to his women.

Another remarkable thing was, there were no kisses at all even though the on screen chemistry was great.

Support Cast

The supporting cast of Ek Tha Tiger was equally good.

Girish Karnad plays Tiger's Boss Mr. Shenoy.

As Tiger's partner Gopi, Ranvir Shorey switched from adorable to deadly with ease.

Roshan Seth did a fairly decent job as the mad scientist.

The ISI Agents were well cast as well.

Pleasing Music

The music of Ek Tha Tiger has been well composed.

Mashaalla seems to be the best song of the film, Banjara is a filler, Jaaniya is a melodious ballad, Laapata is also nice.

The nice thing about these songs is that most of them have been performed by some of the finest singers in Bollywood.

Music has been composed by Sajid-Wajid, and Wajid is one of the singers in Mashalla.

Go for It

My advise is to not take the story too literally, because the director has taken a lot of cinematic liberty, and it shows.

But since the movie is clean, it is for the whole family, so take bunty, gudiya, daada ji, and daadiji for this one.

Ek Tha Tiger review: Eminently forgettable

  • Aug 16, 2012
  • By Khalid Mohamed

Yikes. No no, they aren't your grandparents though they're behaving like some bygone-era pair of lovers, oohing over a pair of swans, aahing over a shower of meteors and he-he'ing over corny stuff like, "If you're called Zee, just call me Doordarshan."

Really, the romancing technique out here is so oudated that you want to buy the couple tickets to Jism 2 or whatever's still showing at the 'plexes.

Truly when director Kabir Khan's Ek Tha Tiger checks into exotic hotels with his Tigress, you don't even see them ordering a spinach sandwich over room service. They camp in the lobby perhaps. Result: This has to be the most sanitised spy versus spy thingy to appear from the Bollytown, making yesteryear's Farz seem so much more entertaining.

Jeetendra in his tight white trousers was more 007 than this Tigerman, who actually says, "Tiger? Isn't that a name given to dogs?" Wow bow, such self-deprecation.

Indeed, the New Age Bond/Bourne has been so badly scripted –non-story by producer Aditya Chopra – that it's a wonder that Salman Khan, on a winning streak nowadays, actually conceded to participate in a project which is like a dry dosa without the masala. Anyone could have stepped into the shoes of the Stunt Wonder required here, but then of course the Yash Raj banner wouldn't have succeeded in encashing on the current Khan mania.

Well, quickie ticket sales over the first weekend is all that counts, doesn't it? Never mind the drubbing the actor's popularity may face, or the disappointing response from the audience. Kids, especially, might doze through the talkie portions, waking up for the action outbursts, and then zzz all over again through the plot, which is patently pointless.

Okay, so you're informed that India's RAW and Pakistan's ISI are at daggers drawn, despite frequent peace conclaves. The agencies' names are dropped as if it were a video game. Tiger (You Know Who) is assigned to 'observe' the movements of a Dublin University's professor (Roshan Seth, trying hard to bicycle), a butter soft task which is made even more buttery by the appearance of Zoya aka Zee (Katrina Kaif).

Turns out that she's an ISI spy, hell's bells, so our hero aims a revolver at her despite his dhak dhak pangs for her. TRP ratings-challenged Doordarshan shoots Zee dead. Eight reels over, it's intermission, no more bad acting from Katrina Kaif. Yippee?

No such luck. Post-intermission Zee is back head-covered at a high power waltz party.Dude Doordarshan and Zee dance, agree that they adore each other, and run away to Cuba. Only she smokes a cigar (hurriedly), he doesn't. Maybe she'll double cross him, maybe he's triple-cross her. Who knows? Who cares? Except for the antsy RAW boss (Girish Karnad, welcome back), the antsier ISI honcho (Designer Stubble), and a Weirdo Beardo (Ranvir Sheorey).

Who this Hairy Bear? Seem he's a fellow RAW agent, who has hated paying for the Tiger's breakfast bills. Eggs tu? Meanwhile, whatever happened to the bicycling Roshan Seth? Don't ask silly questions, and you won't get sillier assumptions. So there!

The concept of a gym-beefed-up spy falling in love (or maybe not) with a woman who smiles like a dentist's delight is much too thin for a Salman Khan vehicle at this point. Elements can be sourced to Ian Fleming's The Spy Who Loved Me, the least successful of the 007 paperbacks.

Anyway if the idea was to give Super Khan something more 'sophisticated' and 'cool', sorry guys, it didn't work. No Sheila ki jawani, no quotable quotes in the dialogue, no muscle flexing (the inevitable bare chest is glimpsed at supersonic speed), just no Salmangiri here.

Sure, the stunts are top-of-the-line (very Bourne Vita though) but you've seen the same – more snazzily executed in the international originals. As for blowing up cars, Abbas-Mustan and Rohit Shetty have already blown up a gazillion of fancy wheels.

Moreover, a stunt double for Lady ISI was more obvious. In the emoting department, Ms Kaif confines herself to two expressions: Frown-frown, grin-grin. Eeeps.

Of the rest of the acting crew, quite clearly Girish Karnad and Ranvir Sheorey (never mind the facial shrubbery) are the class actors here. Salman Khan's screen presence is as likeable as ever – when he is tongue-in-chic. Otherwise there seems to be a disconnect between the actor and the director.

Like the title Ek Tha Tiger deserves to be spoken of in the past tense. In two words, eminently forgettable.

Y! India movie Review: Ek Tha Tiger

By Kunal Guha | Movie Reviews – Wed 15 Aug, 2012 3:25 PM IST

Ek Tha TigerCast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Ranvir Shorey, Girish Karnad, Roshan Seth
Directed by Kabir Khan
Rating: *
Ek Tha Jackie Shroff. And then he had a son. But this one belongs to the genre mastered by Jackie Chan and plastered with superhuman stunts by Salman Khan: action comedy mashed up with a spy thriller. If you thought Agent Vinod (read review) made a Ronald McDonald out of the genre, Ek Tha Tiger (ETT) takes a mousey tail and sticks it up his nose for Salman to swing from ear to ear. Regardless, if you've followed Salman's recent films, you know that they're in a genre of their own and cannot be graded for the story, screenplay, performances or any other metric used to evaluate other films. They can just be enjoyed or suffered, depending upon the elasticity of your tolerance.

Enemy spies materialising from every nook and cranny are smashed shapeless by our indestructible RAW agent Tiger (Salman Khan). Tiger's only grouse: no time for love and his undercover operations make him a little less desirable to most women and their parents. But this changes when he bumps into Zoya (Katrina Kaif) on a mission. Their 'kahaani mein twist' happens when Tiger discovers Zoya's true identity. In Zoya's words, "You are RAW, I am ISI. Yeh nahin ho sakta!" Even Tiger had initially got an earful about making difficult choices between 'farz' and 'pyaar' from RAW chief Shenoy (Girish Karnad). But true love triumphs when he chooses to look beyond Zoya's un-RAWness and lets their bond thaw in sunny Cuba by escaping the shackles of duty. The rest of the film is laced with 3250 glasses smashed, 2314 cars wasted beyond recognition and never-ending chase sequences where Tiger cannot be caught by his tail. Agent Vinod, you've got a doppelganger. Only difference, he doesn't try to diffuse a nuclear bomb that resembles a mosambi juice maker.

This film seems to be director Kabir Khan's ultimate fantasy to script a desi Bond flick (like Tezz). Sadly, forcing a love story in it makes this concoction too lethal to consume. The chase sequences have been choreographed with meticulous detailing of parkour stunts. But this fails to have an impact as Salman only manages to jog clumsily and his unenthusiastic baby steps are followed by Olympian leaps across buildings. Aseem Mishra's cinematography does justice to the yellow outdoors of Cuba and makes Iraq seem just enough dusty to be believable. But stereotyping locations also means tacky and predictable visuals. Turkey: Blue Mosque, Cuba: montage of people puffing cigars and hip swaying to Rumba. It's like the script writer was inspired by a tourist brochure.

Despite what you've read above, Salman fans will cheer and hoot for him each time he appears on the screen and delivers lines like, "Main aashiq banne se pehle agent tha." To his credit, Salman manages to throw in the right amount of punches but fails to conceal his water-pillow-ish paunch. If he would've lost a few inches around his waist and been a bit snappier with the action scenes, he could've just made the cut. Katrina has come a long way from being just a pretty face and offers a range of expressions. Her teary-eyed one is a first and can drift her boat in the direction of actually becoming an actress who can manage a range of roles.

While whatever Salman Khan says with conviction becomes a legendary dialogue, the lines here are superhumanly powerless and clichd. Even in Cuba, a graffiti of Che Guevara (when translated) reads, "Jis Mohabbat Mein Deewangi Nahin Woh Mohabbat Hi Nahin." This is only possible if Javed Akhtar recently went holidaying to Havana. Also, neither of the songs manage to find a home in your ears but if you have die-hard Sallu fans in the audience, they would surely sit back till the end for 'Mashallah'.

One of the most annoying dilemmas that the lead cast is constantly pondering over through the film is whether to follow the dil or the dimaag. Let's just say, if you've donated the first to Salman Khan, leave the second at home at head to the nearest multiplex. Else, stay put at home and suffer Independence Day specials on the telly.
