Ek Tha Tiger: A smart Tiger indeed.

In the opening sequence when the boot meets the cheek in ultra slow motion, you dread you are being fed yet another Ready-made Salman curry but surprisingly director Kabir Khan has come up with a new recipe for the current Tiger of the box office. Kabir wants to put his stamp without stamping on Salman's toes.

A tough ask, considering the performer's current box office status, but Kabir proves to be an astute ringmaster. This Tiger roars and romances in equal measure. Call it hygienic or escapist, Yash Raj banner manages to salvage Salman from his raucous ways to give us a breezy romance with dollops of mind-blowing action. No envelope is pushed in terms of art; it is just a return to the good old family entertainer, which had been missing from the Bollywood bouquet for some time.

Salman plays Tiger, a fearless RAW agent, who is sent to Dublin to keep an eye on a scientist (Roshan Seth) who seems to be sharing secrets with the ISI of Pakistan.

There, on the job he comes across fetching Zoya (Katrina Kaif). For a change the spy's heart misses a beat and their love story begins. Or is it spies? Some years back Anil Sharma tried it with Sunny Deol but unfortunately he took himself and the spy too seriously. Recently Sriram Raghavan ventured into this territory with Agent Vinod but his indulgence sucked his ambitions. Kabir doesn't commit that mistake. He knows he has a beast in hand with whom you can't experiment much. But that doesn't mean a license to run amok.

For all those looking for a similarity with a real life agent, the first turncoat that is eliminated is called Ravinder. Sad for the black tiger but this Tiger is a different animal.

There is nothing RAW about the film for the spies are straight out of comic books or you can say Yash Raj template. Nobody double crosses! But Kabir and his co-writer Neelesh Misra ensure that there is an intrinsic logic to the proceedings, just enough to keep the escapades credible within the realm of a Bollywood spy thriller. Like when Tiger pretends to be a writer, Zoya points out that his hands don't look like holders of pen. And a joke on channels later becomes a reason for code names. Casting actors like Girish Karnad and Ranvir Shorey safeguards that even the cardboards have some life. It is these little touches which help us take leaps of faith when 'escape' velocity takes this vehicle out of realistic space.

Visually appetising, Kabir's films don't make big statements. They don't dare to test the brain either. At best they skim the surface of the issues they claim to talk about.

In New York, it was the watered down version of terrorism. Here amidst all the globe trotting, Kabir has a pacifist agenda. What happens when you fall in love with the 'other' without knowing the identity of the other… And does a secret agent have the right to fall in love with anybody other than the nation?

Of late, you don't associate style with Salman and you don't expect anything but style from Katrina. Perhaps, that's why the two don't pair together on screen. In an example of clever writing, Kabir ensures the story blends each other's strengths and weakness. The ghost of Yuvraaj is exorcised and it is their effervescent candour and canoodling that keeps the crucial middle portion merry.

After a string of strident performances, Salman is eager to show stripes that we no longer associate with him. After a long time one gets to see a glimpse of impish traits that won him his female fan following.

There is an inherent wry wit in his character that gels with his real life persona. He makes fun of his job and name and Zoya takes pot shots at his age. Even that clichd star watching sequences has some easy humour. Kabir has characterised Zoya in a way that gives Katrina a chance to play with her natural beauty. And believe me she is as breath-taking as some of the locales where the film is shot.

Shedding a few layers of plasticity, she is very much the girl to die for, the beloved who can make you cheat your nation. For a change she also gets the opportunity to use those long legs to kick and leap and the action choreographers Markos Rounthwaite and Conrad E Palmisano, ensure that it comes across as an authentic mix of aesthetics and endurance.

The set pieces are truly spectacular and are not just about brute force. The intercutting between actors and their body doubles is smart. So is the cinematography by Aseem Mishra.

EK THA TIGER

Genre: Romantic action thriller

Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Girish Karnad, Ranvir Shorey, Roshan Seth

Plot: What happens when love comes in the path of duty…

Bottom line: Not a great piece of cinema but the Tiger has enough wit and will to ensnare brownie points from the discerning as well as die hard fans.

EK Tha Tiger: Indore relives days of Thursday release.

Indore: The historical opening which Salman Khan starrer EK Tha Tiger has received with an unorthodox Wednesday release has given new dimensions to the growing trend of pre-Friday movie releases among Bollywood big banners. The trend has helped Indoreans relive the old tradition of Thursday releases.

Prior to the advent of television and video cassettes, Indore had a distinction of being a lone centre where movies used to be released through single screening on Thursdays.

Recounting those days, president of Central Cine Circuit Association, Indore, Jitendra Jain said that the craze for Thursday single screening was overwhelming at that time. People flocked in huge numbers to get tickets even as film industry across the country waited with bated breath for feedback prior to Friday release.

Jain said that the advent of technology and objections from prominent movie producers led to discontinuation of this trend. "Producers started opposing Thursday releases as at times poor feedbacks led to heavy losses," he maintained.

Pre-Friday releases are gaining momentum as the advent of modern technology coupled with growing menace of piracy has forced film makers to use aggressive publicity and recover chunk of cost in initial days after the release.

Affirming the trend, noted film critic JP Chauksey said that now big banners prefer festivals or holidays for maximizing revenues on the release day. He said that during Thursday single screenings, movie buffs queued in front of theatres in huge numbers. Black marketing of tickets was rampant those days.

"I once queued up in front of cinema hall at 5 in the morning for watching the movie Ganga Jamuna," he added.
For avoiding piracy, nowadays banners try to maximize revenues during initial days by having large numbers of screening and by selecting holidays for the release, he said.

Chauksey further said that Ek Tha Tiger was released at 3300 screens in India and 468 screens overseas. Film distributor Akash Nagaria also accepted that large numbers of screening and holiday release help film makers recover their cost within a few days.

Salman Khan's 100 crore Eid this year!

With the tremendous response Ek Tha Tiger has got so far, trade pundits are hinting at the film to cross 100 crore boundary this Eid, which calls for a double celebration for Tiger. If we bifurcate, ETT has collected some 33 cr on the first day followed by 14.52 cr on the second, 12.90 cr on the third and 16.75 cr on the fourth day. With Eid today, it is estimated to reach 30 crore.

Interestingly, the only superstar Khan available in Mumbai to celebrate Eid is the Salman. As per the reliable sources, the perfectionist Aamir Khan is away in Chicago, US for the shoot of Dhoom 3. He has rented an apartment in the city to spend time with his wife Kiran Rao and son Azad Rao Khan in free time. The superstar also aims at getting a homely feeling on Eid thus; a rented flat was always on his mind.

On the other hand, another reigning superstar Khan, Shah Rukh will be away from family celebrating Eid in Ladakh. He will be shooting for his forthcoming Yash Raj starrer untitled film along with Katrina Kaif.

Kat, thus, too will miss out on the grand celebrations back home. Besides Salman, his family and close friends, her family members too had come down to rejoice the celebration but Kat like a true professional is bound by professional commitments.

Ek Tha Tiger Monday Occupancy Update. Excellent Start.

Ek Tha Tiger has taken an excellent start at the box office on Monday. Monday being Eid Holiday and being the end of month of Ramzan has done favour to ETT. Public is coming in numbers to the theatres.

Occupancy for the Morning and Noon shows are around 60-70% on average across all India. Single Screens have shown huge jump from previous days. Multiplexes occupancy all India is around 60-65% on average. Single Screens have shown occupancy of 70-75%+ all India. Going by the early trend ETT should easily collect more than Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Will it cross the Sunday figure or remain below it is to be seen.

ETT on Sunday has collected around 22 crore nett as per early estimates and data is still complied. If Ek Tha Tiger performs well in Monday evening and night shows huge numbers are on cards, otherwise still collections will be mouth watering for sure.

Circuit wise Details - Delhi Extraordinary better than Sunday. Mumbai is decent with occupancy of 40-50%. Gurgaon is good with 60% occupancy. Northen Belt is very good for today. Mass centres like C.P Berar and C.I is better than previous days.

Ek Tha Tiger Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif
Has packed a solid punch in its opening weekend, smashing all records left, right and centre. The biz is bigger than Salman Khan's last release BODYGUARD, which is his biggest opener and grosser to date. It is the fastest 100 cr grosser ever and Salman's fourth [DABANGG, READY, BODYGUARD]. The business is expected to get further boost from Monday onwards [Eid]. Collected approx Rs 100.16 cr nett in its extended weekend [Wed to Sun]. Mind-boggling!
