This post is from a Pakistani blog :

From Burewala in Pakistan, where he was born, to Bollywood where he lived, died and became immortal -Rajesh Khanna's death has come as a painful jolt to his millions of fans across the globe. The iconic actor had been marginalised by the Indian film elite and maligned by the media, but such is the impact of the greatest Superstar of all time, that one week on from his death his name generates far more search results on Google than Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan or Aamir Khan. Every Indian newspaper, news channel and website is covering every aspect of his life and articles are being written on anything connected to him from whether his famous mansion Aashirwad was haunted to which particular brand of pan Kaka preferred. Last week his funeral saw the whole of Mumbai come to a standstill. Thousands of fans lined the streets, and braved ceaseless rain to say goodbye to the most loved actor the world has ever known. As fans jostled with Police to catch one last glimpse of Rajesh Khanna's body, the hysteria that followed him wherever he went in the 1970s was once more in evidence. Indeed his co-star Shabana Azmi aptly remarked that the 69 year old actor (who was semi-retired and in a self imposed exile from the spotlight) remained a Superstar to the end, as evidenced by the swarms of fans that gathered outside his house when news of his death first spread across Mumbai.

Kaka in death, had won a final victory. Against all those forces that conspired against him for decades, desperate to scandalise and trivialise him. The Superstar had never cared for those forces, and was content knowing that his fans would always remain his, as he aptly remarked in the Havells TV ad that was to be his first and last. The media wanted to portray him as an ex-superstar forgotten by the masses, and desperately seeking the love and attention that was once showered on him. He was described as arrogant and manipulative, unbalanced and unable to accept that his time had passed. Yet when Kaka visited Chandigarh or Amritsar, Nagpur or Nainital in the 2000s he saw the same crowds desperate to shake hands with him, get an autograph or even see a glimpse of the eternal Superstar. The 'reel' India rejected Rajesh Khanna, but the real India loved and adored him, from the first time he crinkled those famous eyes whilst singing 'Meri Sapno ki rani…' to the last time they saw him, gesturing victory to the crowds who had assembled outside his house when news of his ill health first spread.

Today, as his millions of admirers try to adjust to the sad reality that he is no longer with us, the sense of loss and pain almost defies description and understanding. Why will a man, who had retired as a leading actor in 1988, be so widely missed and so deeply mourned in 2012? Why is a star who had aged and changed, and was barely seen on television once a year leave so many tears -and we know he hated them -in the eyes of fans from 16 to 60 across the entire globe? The answer is almost impossible to give. Was it the magnetic charm, incredible charisma, stunning smile that made Rajesh Khanna immortal? Did he become a Superstar thanks to the incredible music of his every movie, and his ability to bring the songs alive through his soulful performances? Was it that his characters like Anand, have left such a deep impact on our hearts and minds that nothing can erase them? Or perhaps his unique ability to convey emotion through his expressions and convincingly perform every type his character? Perhaps the best answer came from his fellow Superstar – and fan – Amitabh Bachchan when he said "His generation and the generations that follow, shall never be able to describe, or understand his phenomena ..!!

With a new formula for success and large multistar casts, Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra took Amitabh Bachchan to the dizzying heights of superstardom. Rajesh Khanna was dropped by the producers at the first chance, and all those praying for kaka's downfall were now happy to piggy bank on Amitabh Bachchan, multistar movies and masala entertainment. Kaka struggled as never before to regain a foothold until 1979, when Amardeep hit the jackpot. It was now that Rajesh Khanna began his fightback. Thodisi Bewafai, Dard, Dhanwan were declared major hits and kaka's superb performances won him awards and Filmfare nominations. The hits continued, and by 1986 he had delivered as many as 17 successes. Most of these movies were small budget and by obscure Southern producers, yet despite being sidelined by the Bollywood elite, Kaka's fan base ensured big openings for his every movie. This was the reason that he remained in demand until his retirement in 1991, starring in four or five movies each year. In 1983 he almost dethroned Amitabh, with three mega-hits in quick succession -Avtar, Souten and Agar Tum Na Hote. His critical successes included Aaj Ka MLA in 1984, which won him the All India Critics Award and Amrit in 1986 which got him the BFJA award.

Kaka's successes in the 1980s were achieved despite a hostile press, an indifferent film industry and envious co-stars. One can only imagine what he could have achieved if he hadn't faced these obstacles.. It goes without saying that the press at the time constantly belittled his successes and overplayed his failures. However the Superstar was back, and the magic had not waned. In 1991, he joined politics and very nearly beat the iconic BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani. Second time around, he comfortably defeated Shatrugun Sinha and became a member of the Indian parliament. Five years later, he left politics. In 1999, he gave a stellar performance as a father in Rishi Kapoor's Aa Ab Laut Chalen. In the 2000s he was not able to revive his film career, but continued to pull the crowds wherever he went. To give a few examples of this, Rajesh Khanna visited the Golden Temple on 8th September 2007. The Tribune News Service reported "There was a stampede-like situation as a large number of fans and passers-by mobbed Khanna when he arrived at the Golden Temple around 2 pm. Some of them had been camping there since 11 am". In 2006, Kaka was greeted by a crowd of up to 25,000 each time he shot a scene calling out his name and reciting lines from his movies when he shot in Nainital after a gap of three decades. His amazed co-star Zeenat Aman said 'It's incredible, it's like he had never been away". Despite these little reported facts, the media continued to portray Kaka as a 'has been' and a forgotten ex-superstar.

On July 18th 2012, Kaka won his final and decisive victory over all the slanders and lies told about him. The King of hearts, still reigned supreme. Rest in peace Kaka.

tanvismile,

The whole article is about making all realize the way Rajesh broke down, as any man in any profession, and had no one beside him, to help him cope.

As far as ruining careers, nothing has been proved... Media speculation does not mean something has to be right,

A standard example, about Rajesh coming late to sets, Rajesh stated, that he had been so busy with his movies, that it had never been intentional, yet media hyped it.

And again, Rajesh, was too dignified to fight back the same dirty trials against either his ladies, or Devyani who hyped him when he rises high, and exaggerated his fall, or his fellow stars who had resented his success, when he had been at his peak.

And when a man is extremely successful, why would he not be flattered?

There is no excuse for Dimple playing with him. Sources back then state that it was she who had encouraged Rajesh in the first place. Yet she was the first to ditch him, at his fall. And yet, she refuses divorce, when he finally desires to start anew.

Media has a lot of stuff floating, it is upto you to digest everything, and extract the truth.

if you believe media at fault then how can you Say watever u heard abt dimple is true, there is no news saying that dimple refused to divorse, and devyani, infact devani was good frnd ,whom he called around 3 in night ,to tel abt his dimple relation, devyani was the first person to know it.why do u say media hypes?regarding abt coming late on sets,it was not intentional, but it just means he dint care, many people said that he was responsible for him downfall,,your stressing on issues which have been not talked in media,i feel bad for him ,dimple is co factor for his fal bt he is not a victim,he is main person responsible for it.
