Who in Bollywood, according to you, has done the best within the Masala genre?

I was watching Singham today and really felt that Rohit Shetty has some sorta skill that David Dhawan, Sooraj Barjatya, and all them contemporary masala regulars don't have

He has the typical formula for masala, which is good action, good music (usually), pretty actress, cool main guy, comedy and action, epic dialogues etc
But there's some sorta emotional angle he has in his movies that really draws me in... I've watched Singham about 7-8 times by now, but I still tear up when the cute little kid asks Ajay Devgan not to go away from Goa, or even the ending LOL

Which director/actor/music director/whatever do you think is an iconic masala genre symbol?

It came on TV a lot and I don't have a life when I'm on vacation so.. that might explain 5 of the 7 times 😆
I love the movie though but don't hold me liable if you hate it ahaha

i agree with you. Rohit's trick is that he also draws you through the emotional content which gives it a little logic somehow. I liked golmaal 3 and the emotional sequences etc did draw me from that movie as well. Watching all comedy without any emotion seems a little too forced! Sajid is the last one i would say has a good masala sense, his comedy comes too forced!

Yay! Another Singham fan like me! I liked Singham too...best movie in the masala genre in 2011. I think the genre of Sooraj(family melodrama), David/Priyadarshan(comedy) is a little different from today's popular masala genre ie action, romance, comedy with some bawdy jokes thrown in started by Dabangg and Wanted. IMO the most successful directors of this genre are Rohit and Prabhu Deva. My preference is towards Rohit's films.
