Hi.
The very title of this post makes an assumption - "why do fans get personal and touchy?", as if other people don't. Everyone gets personal and touchy, and that's normal. The internet is not very different from life, except that it gives you greater freedom in terms of what you can say and get away with.
As I said, everyone gets personal and touchy - fans about the 'people' they love, others about their right to say what they want.
The right to say what you want sounds more sensible than the right to defend a celebrity you do not know, which is why most of us tend to be prejudiced against the fans and for everyone else's right to say what they want.
I think what we forget that is that speech incites passion, and sometimes even logical, rational speech can be harmful and unjust. Once something is seen as 'hate speech', then people stop paying attention to what they are saying and only react.
This is not to say that it is ok for people to react. Yesterday, in my post, I said using language to mock others is wrong, i.e. making fun of someone who does not know English is lower than low. At the same time, abusing is equally problematic. Those are two aspects that this forum needs to perhaps think about.
I may seem to be trivialising a strong word like 'hate speech', which is usually used in political contexts, but I don't think what is happening here is different from those contexts. I have seen people follow the same patterns of argumentation while debating politics.
