With all due respect RTH, I never made fun of sexual assault, at the same time, I don't think it's ok to be stripping young boys on national television because some buffoon thinks it's funny, it was neither funny, nor cute.. no parent would consent to this. Reality shows maybe scripted, but this certainly wasn't, he was clearly pissed out of his head on this episode, he also wasted no opportunity to insult Himesh several times on that episode.
I find it hypocritical and double standard where on the one hand we want both sexes to be treated equally, and this would be regarded as a sexual assault if it was done to a woman, but it's ok to do it to a boy?, strip him topless and get him to sing. Till date, I have never seen any reality show contestant singing topless, neither have I ever seen any guest stripping a singer and asking them to sing.
What's wrong is wrong.
I think you have some very valid points raised here. They do merit discussion and ought to be discussed. But your post did not seem to reflect a serious concern for the issue. It seemed more of an attempt to rile Salman fans, and my only problem was that this should not have been used lightly merely as a riling fans issue. You could have presented the discussion points in a better way.
While I do believe the behavior was not 'abusive' and everyone present is at fault, I will agree that it is inappropriate and embarrassing. Although I don't recollect any other person being stripped, there are plenty of times I've felt that that a line was crossed in the name of fun and games. There have been several times celebrities have hugged fans or participants without permission leading to embarrassed people. There are many times celebrities/hosts have flirted with contestants and egged them on despite them flushing and trying to politely refuse. So many times show hosts pair up and tease contestants without being sensitive to the fact that this maybe something taboo or prohibited back home.
The other issue apart from a sexual harassment perspective is the body image/self consciousness issue. Many people are just not comfortable flaunting in public, not out of modesty but a shy nature. A shirtless performance, a performance in skimpy outfits are something that should be run by before the performance to ensure that the contestant and parents are acceptable with it. And in this case it would be much more pressing concern to pause and think if Aneek was comfortable being shirtless and if it put him in an acutely awkward position. I'd cat call and cheer for a guy to go shirtless, but I would leave it up to him to do it. Salman did not consider this and that was insensitive and immature of him.
I agree with you to a certain extent on the double standards between girls and boys. I don't think it is right to treat boys and girls differently. However, at the same time there are some fundamental differences between how male and female bodies are perceived. A topless male is accepted by society and a man who exposes his chest is applauded. A topless female is considered perverse by society and a woman who exposes her chest is frowned upon and even legally punished in many parts. Ideally, I think the same norms of modesty should be applied to men and women and on a personal level I don't view them differently. But as long as society and law have different standards we are compelled to have different standards because a man made to strip for show will be laughed off but a woman who goes through the same thing will be labeled s**t even if it was not her choice. Since she has a lot more to suffer it should be taken more seriously. I'm not justifying dual standards, but expressing why we sometimes have to do so.
