SHANGHAI FEVER has begun!!

Critics &Viewers agree. SHANGHAI is beyond awesome.

Shanghai
By Taran Adarsh, 6 Jun 2012, 18:52 hrs IST
He is acknowledged for creating high-quality cinema. Right from KHOSLA KA GHOSLA to OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! to LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA, Dibakar Banerjee's movies have been lapped up by spectators. He typically picks up avant-garde subject matters and his latest flick SHANGHAI is no exception. KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! and LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA presented diverse stories. Now Dibakar presents the much-anticipated thriller SHANGHAI, which orbits in the region of gluttony and deceitfulness of politicians.

Political thrillers are a much abused genre, but it's not frequently that movies confer us with what SHANGHAI offers: A political thriller wherein the politics seizes precedence over the thriller element. It's more of a reality check about where India stands in the present day. In the context of the film, we have this dream of a Shanghai like city, where there is commerce, eminence, capital and the material comfort. But the reality is something else!

Enthused by a book of the 1960s, 'Z', by Greek writer and diplomat Vassilis Vassilikos, a Costa Gavras film, Z, was also motivated by this book in 1969. Banerjee detected remarkable similarities between the Greece in the book and the India of today, procured its rights and acclimatized the account to a metropolis in India.

A political activist [Prosenjit Chatterjee] meets with an accident in an Indian city gearing up for elections. A lone girl [Kalki Koechlin] believes it to be a murder. A po*n film maker [Emraan Hashmi] claims to have proof that will bring the government down. A high-ranking bureaucrat [Abhay Deol] is brought in by the government to control damage. The three of them blow the lid off the Indian dream called Shanghai.

SHANGHAI deals with the two sides of the coin: Abhay symbolizes the scholarly, frontward looking and progressive India, while Emraan is the ordinary guy who is left behind. In SHANGHAI, Abhay and Emraan depict the two halves of India which, in many ways, are conflicting against each other for a larger divide in the cake.

The finest aspect of Dibakar Banerjee's films is that you can't articulate what he's going to come up with next and how unerringly he's going to engage you in his creation. All his movies so far have picked up issues that concern us, but the temperament was so diverse that, if you weren't aware, you might not have estimated that they were all helmed by the same director.

SHANGHAI is a political thriller woven around much-battered terms 'expansion' and 'development'. This sort of a deception has ensued before in various nations/states and it is these types of political misdemeanors that Dibakar dabbles with in SHANGHAI. SHANGHAI is an affluent work of art by a master storyteller. Most significantly, it's a film of our times. It evokes myriad emotions in you. It leaves you horrified, distressed' it may even make you livid. I'd go to the extent of pronouncing that SHANGHAI is one of the bravest and most commanding movies of this decade. A contemporary film about our times, our lives.

Vishal-Shekhar's music is alright. 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' is, of course, the track to watch out for, while 'Imported Kamariya' is passable. The background score does complete justice to the material on screen, while the cinematography captures the mood brilliantly.

The casting is offbeat, but beguiling. One could've never anticipated Abhay and Emraan acting in the same film. Emraan is your regular guy, so there is an instantaneous connect with him. Besides, it's a new Emraan that you witness here [paunch, blackened/stained teeth], which is in sharp contrast to his on-screen romantic representation. Influenced by Dibakar's thought process, Emraan takes the plunge and wholly submits to the director's visualization. This is a defining moment in his career and I am sure, even Emraan must've rediscovered himself in this variety of film-making.

Abhay's character is authoritative, unprejudiced, calm and uncomplicated. He gets all the nuances of his characters right. In many ways Abhay's character is the vertebrae of the movie. He clutches it together. The endearing actor sinks his teeth into the character and comes up with a triumphant act.

Though Kalki has depicted distressed characters in films like SHAITAN, THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS and also in DEV D, she skillfully performs the part of an absolute outsider and brings on a certain susceptibility, which is the prerequisite demand of her characterization. Kalki is truly awe-inspiring and enacts her part with flourish.

Prosenjit Chatterjee is effective in a brief role. Farooque Sheikh adds a lot of weight to the proceedings. Pitobash is exceptional. Supriya Pathak gets limited scope, but she's competent. Anant Jog is remarkable. Tillotama Shome is super.

On the whole, SHANGHAI is undeniably one of the most politically astute films ever made. It keeps you involved and concerned right from its inception to the harrowing culmination. This is not your usual Bollywood masala film, but a serious motion picture that has a voice, that makes you think, that makes a stunning impact. A must watch!

A still from the film

By Soumyadipta Banerjee

You love biryani but from its numerous varieties, you particularly savour the Lucknowi dum variety. After a stressful work day, if you somebody offers you a plateful of that for dinner, you feel your whole day is made. Now fate plays a bad game with you and your work takes you to a place where you get everything but that favourite dish. Six years pass by and you don't get to taste a morsel of that biryani. And then suddenly one day out of the blue, somebody plants a plateful in front of you.

So how would you feel? With a strange, warm and tingling sensation in your mouth, you will stare at the plate for a couple of minutes and then you will pick up a spoonful and enjoy every second of that first bite.

It seems Emraan Hashmi was enjoying every second of this film role like that Biryani. All his life, Emraan has been speaking about doing meaningful cinema. But all this while, all he got to do was to play to the gallery, until 'Shanghai' happened.

Going by the amount of homework and dedication that Emraan Hashmi has shown in this film, it seems that he has been waiting for an opportunity like this one. This film has happened to his life after six years of longing for meaningful cinema...

Abhay Deol has done quite a few good roles that people will remember but for Emraan Hashmi, this film will go down in history as one of his finest performances.

This film doesn't play to the gallery but then neither did any of Dibakar Banerjee's earlier films like 'Love, Sex aur Dhoka' or 'Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye'. But like all of his earlier films, this film also stands out among the scores of box office releases that play to the front row audience. It might not score as much in terms of cash returns when compared to the onslaught that a 'Rowdy Rathore' has unleashed, but 'Shanghai' is a film that has got a firm grip on the reality. In spite of being so real, this film hooks your attention from the beginning to the end.

What's wrong with the film?
There's nothing wrong with the film but perhaps there's something is wrong with us. After spending all our weekend budgets on films like 'Rowdy Rathore' or 'Dangerous Ishhq', this movie is like tight thappad on our faces. But then, nobody in India likes a thappad on their face. This movie is too close to reality and too morbid for you to enjoy it with your five-member family team on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The film will tell you about the grim reality in India, the movie will tell you how land grabbing actually happens and how every RTI activist is murdered and it gets called an 'accident'. Now would you like it on a happy, rainy Sunday afternoon? Perhaps not. So, all of you saying 'No' with me, don't scroll any further and click on the sexy girl's wallpaper on our homepage instead.

For the rest of us, read on...

What's right about the film?
The film is about land-grabbing in the name of development – a grim reality that India is still coming to terms with. It somewhat works like this... the MNCs come to a particular state, tie up with the state government and then start work on their 'special' economic zones. If you don't want to give up your land, never mind - the land-sharks in coalition with the government will unleash such a terror ring around you that you will run to save your life.

Prosenjit Chatterjee plays such an activist and Kalki plays one of his students who is enamored by him. He is 'killed' in an accident and Abhay Deol plays the IAS officer who is entrusted with the inquiry report. But the real hero of the film is filmmaker-cum-local videographer who suddenly finds himself in the thick of the action as Abhay Deol goes about uncovering the gory details of Chatterjee's death, bit by bit. That's Emraan Hashmi for you.

Even though there's a strong disclaimer in the beginning, there's nothing in the film that is not inspired from real life. This is how activists are killed, inquiry commissions are misled and the voices of people are drowned.

But then it is a slap of reality on our faces and we wouldn't like it. Sadly, we like a slap on our bum like Rowdy Rathore.

What to do?
Remember the brain that you had left behind before watching 'Rowdy Rathore'? Pick that up and go for 'Shanghai'. If you miss this movie, you will do so at your own risk.

Shanghai – Movie Review

Posted on 06 Jun 2012 at 2:34pm

Starring – Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi, Kalki Koechlin, Farooq Sheikh

Director – Dibakar Bannerjee

Producer – Dibakar Bannerjee, Ajay Bijli, Priya Shreedharan, Sanjeev K Bijli

Banner – PVR Pictures

Music – Vishal Shekhar

Genre – Romance, Thriller

Rating – ***

By Prerrna Seth/ Kreative Access Media

A satire, yes Dibakar Bannerjee's 'Shanghai' is a lampoon on the complex political system of the country that's slaying our democracy. It shows the real India and what's hampering our growth. There are few who are fighting for the common man's right who get assassinated fighting for truth like social activist Dr Ali Ahmedi (Prosenjit Chatterjee). And then there are few who have a little power and are smart like enquiry commissioner Krishnan (Abhay Deol) who gets successful to an extent. But in the end the real culprits are not punished, there is just another enquiry commission made to look over the matter.

So what is more important, making our cities look like Shanghai or solving our internal problems?

Gripping and intriguing are the two words that completely define 'Shanghai'. From the word go, you are titillated to know what will happen next. Bannerjee makes sure that for once, the audience doesn't blink an eyelid. Political rallies, riots are portrayed in a convincing and realistic manner. Well cast actors, strategically placed songs, unconventional camera angles scream of a very different film that proudly has the story as its main USP.

The three lead actors Abhay, Emraan and Kalki prove that cinema is not just about good looking people roaming around in alluring locations. It's the basic content, the story that makes a film. Abhay impresses with completely taking over the Madrasi twang. He pronounces choice as chwois, impeccably charming us with his versatility. Respect. Emraan Hashmi is not less, as a filthy looking, tobacco chewing man who makes sidey po*n films. He stays in character throughout and steals the show whenever he is on screen. He probably is the best thing that could happen to Shanghai, after the story of course. Kalki is good as ever but somehow, I have started to find her very monotonous. Pitobash is cute, Farooq Sheikh is impressive and Supriya Pathak was a surprise package.

Okay, now coming to what the film misses, no. 1 is a mass appeal. An average Indian cinegoer goes to a cinema hall to forget everything, sit back and enjoy. Most of us would give a blind eye to what our political goons are doing and would not want to see the same thing in a film. Unless, you are showing a No One Killed Jessica, that has all the masala elements to keep the viewer entertained, there is very less chance of people watching your film. But that's what Bannerjee is looking at here, only viewers who can think over the matter and try to bring out a change in their own capacity.

The background score gets too loud at places. Music is okay, the lyrics making it stand out. Scene transition confuses and the screenplay goes too much back and forth straining your brain cells. So if you want to really watch this film take your brains with you.

Pros: Story and the star cast

Cons: confusing screenplay

Verdict: Watch it to know more about the real India

SHANGHAI quick movie review: An engaging thriller!

Sign up for the BL newsletter!

Our reviewer just got out of the screening of Dibakar Banerjee's Shanghai, and he can't stop raving about it

Here's what our reviewer told us as soon as he walked out of the theatre, after watching Shanghai: "The film is hardly one hour-fifty minutes long, and you wish that there was no interval. You don't need one when you are watching a crisp and thrilling film like this one! It's an engaging thriller with a political backdrop, and the performances are mind blowing. Kalki Koechlin is fabulous. Pitobash Tripathy is superb. Abhay Deol has captured the nuisances of the south Indian accent perfectly. He is restrained and strong. But the star of the show is Emraan Hashmi. It might turn out to be too intelligent for Emraan Hashmi fans who generally come to see him smooch his leading lady. So we will have to wait and see if a brilliant film like this is lapped up at the box office or not. Shanghai shocks, engages and makes a powerful statement. Dibakar lives up to the standards he has set for himself."

Watch this space for a full review of the film.

Shanghai' best film, Dibakar best director: Kashyap

By Sohaib Shah on June 6, 2012 10:29 pm in Top Media News / no comments

Filmmakers rarely applaud each other's work ' but Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee are all praises
for each other. After watching Shanghai, Kashyap has declared it is the best film he has ever watched
and Banerjee is the country's best director.

"It's a film that should be made compulsory for everybody to watch. This is the most powerful and the
best film I have seen in a long time,
" Kashyap said here Thursday at a special screening of Shanghai.

"Dibakar Banerjee is the best filmmaker in the country. Period. There is no scope for discussion on
this," he added. Shanghai, featuring Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin in prominent roles,
focusses on politics and corruption.

Kashyap even took to Twitter after the film's screening and called it a "visceral, stunning and ballsiest
film ever made in this country". Banerjee, who has earlier helmed projects like Khosla Ka Ghosla and
Love Sex Aur Dhokha, believes Kashyap is an inspiring filmmaker.

"Anurag is too generous and I also think that probably because Anurag is around in the scene and
he makes it so exciting and at the same time encouraging is what gives other filmmakers the guts to
actually go ahead and do what they are doing," he said.

"It's very exciting to have someone like Anurag around because you kind of get excited to do more
exciting stuff," he added.

Shanghai is going to be released on 8th June 2012, and is distributed by IMGC global in pakistan and
Encyclomedia PR is handling its PR.
