This is very serious..The Indian Medical Academy asking for an apology..perhaps you know that no Doctor can practice in India if he/she is not the member of IMA..its the regulatory authority
You are here: Home Entertainment Now, IMA also asks Aamir to say sorry

Now, IMA also asks Aamir to say sorry

New Delhi, Jun 2, 2012, (PTI) :

The Indian Medical Association today demanded an immediate apology from actor Aamir Khan accusing him of having defamed the medical profession in the May 27 episode of his TV show 'Satyamev Jayate' and warned him of legal action if he did not do so.

"Aamir Khan should apologise for having defamed and given one side of the story on medical profession. If he does not we are contemplating to take legal action against him for defaming and demoralising the medical profession in his TV show Satyamev Jayate which was telecast on May 27 on Star TV channel," IMA Secretary General Dr D R Rai said.

"Every profession has its black sheep. Even the profession, to which Aamir Khan belongs, is in the news every now and then due to some ill practices in the industry. But it can safely be claimed that the white sheep always outnumber the black ones in every field.

It was extremely wrong on the part of a responsible citizen of the country and a public figure like Aamir Khan whom most of the citizens of the country might even consider as their role model, to put the rotten eggs over the good ones," he said at a press conference held to present the doctors' perspective on the episode on Healthcare on
Aamir Khan's Programme "Satyamev Jayate".

Doctors representing 21 medical institutions took part in the press conference. Prominent among those present at the press conference were Dr V K Narang, finance secretary, IMA, Dr Harish Gupta, president of Delhi Medical Association, Dr K K Aggarwal, president, Heart Care Foundation of India, Dr Harsh Mahajan of Mahajan Imaging Centre and Dr Ashok Grover, chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital amongst others.

The May 27 episode of Aamir's show sought to throw light on medical malpractices across the country.

In a statement issued to the press, the doctors said they spend years together studying and practicing medicine and give a new lease of life to thousands of patients through medical treatment and procedures.

"Most of them were of the view that Mr Khan wanted to create ruffled features and increase his show's TRP instead of portraying both sides of the coin," he said.

Noting that bad elements despite being fewer leave a more lasting impact than the good ones and claiming that the percentage of good over evil is much higher in the medical profession, he said more time should have been alloted to showing the good aspect of professionals.

He also said that inviting the Association would have helped budding doctors viewing the episode to choose their role models and the general masses not to form a bad opinion of doctors.

Dr Rai said, "We reiterate our concern and state that Mr Aamir Khan should apologise publicly for portraying a one-sided story which is not in the right spirit of ethics of constructive journalism, especially while bringing to the notice of the general masses, some cases of rare occurrences as regular phenomenon or practice."

But the MCI didn't have any problem with the show, otherwise why would the MCI chief sit through the whole show?
And what's with this every profession has its black sheep and every profession has a dark side, hello this show has been made to address the dark side of such professions and things that affect the society.😕And its about healthcare, something that's of primary importance now in India and I am very happy the show brought out what's actually true these days...there are more black sheep than the good doctors these days...all they need is money and nothing else...but this doesn't mean we say every doctor is bad...thats why even Aamir said at the end of the show that there are many good doctors in India now..have these people actually seen the episode?
And Aamir is not someone so powerful to you know turn the doctors evils in people's eyes...go to any hospital...there are still overcrowded hospitals and people standing in the queue from morning to evening to get a check up...so what's actually the problem with the board? They are getting what they want.

@Golden dew-I didn't mean that way. What I meant was that if the chief of a statutory body like MCI,can make his presence felt and agree about the malpractices in a show which is being deemed as 'maligning the image of the doctors',does the episode really have anything against doctors? If it was really against the doctors,I am sure the MCI Chief would speak out in the show as well as after the airing of the episode, isn't it?

Sorry for misunderstanding ur earlier statement. Amir and the Production team didn't malign the medical fraternity.. they just highlighted the dark things going on in the name of medical practice all with proofs.Like u said if it was maligning and defaming so many Doctors and chief of regulatory authority wouldn't have been part of it.. its just that these people @ IMA suddenly realized the reach of the show and are afraid of backlash hence this sudden hue & cry..

^Exactly, intact when the previous article came about Medscape protesting against the show, someone from Medscape said that he is surprised that no doctor has spoken against the show till now...that shows who is correct and who is wrong...doctors didn't say anything against the show because they didn't find anything against them...and the power of the young doctors in our country...who can create a riot like situation with the quota issue that police needs to control them with water cannons, I am sure if this show would be so insulting to them, they wouldn't waste a minute and come down to the streets.
