Leave Aishwarya alone!

By Maya Menon | Arc Light – 4 hours ago

It is that time of the year when Bollywood focuses its attention on the French Riviera. The red carpet at Cannes is more interesting than the films showcased at the festival for many. And naturally that brings us to Aishwarya Rai, who has been a regular on the red carpet.

Photos: Ash set to go to Cannes for the 11th time

When Aishwarya walks the red carpet this year at Cannes, she will be supporting the cause of the girl child. But long before the event, people all over the world are talking about just one thing. Her weight — or her lack of interest and effort in shedding those extra pounds she gained post pregnancy.

While actors like Lara Dutta, a new mommy herself, has come to Ash's defense, there are still many who feel that Ash should shed 'the oodles' of weight she has put on. The Daily Mail reported that a fan said that 'she is a Bollywood actress and it is her duty to look good and fit.' Another added: 'She needs to learn from people like Victoria Beckham who are back to size zero weeks after their delivery.' However, I do not feel that Aishwarya is duty bound to shed her weight!

Two days back, we put this video up and as usual, the comments section makes for an interesting read.

One of our readers, Jimms, says let her live her life. Her being fat or thin should really not bother anyone. This is the problem with our people. If you want to watch cricket or film, its fine. But please don't go after their personal life, you will get nothing and you are simply wasting your precious time. Who cares if Aish... is fat or thin. Be realistic in life. You have many things to worry about. Let us build our life and our nation as a whole." (Jimms, I have taken the liberty to modify your comment a bit to please the sentiments of my editor)

Says Kalyani, "I appreciate her dedication to EVERY role she is playing in her life... when she was ruling Bollywood... she was so particular about her 'heroine' looks... do not ignore the effort she must have had to maintain herself. Now after getting happily married to the man she loves and taking one more step ahead as a mother, she is dedicating her time to her baby and taking very good care of her... Instead of being an obsessed 'celebrity', she has taken up the role of a wonderful mom and has left everything else behind... Hat's off to you Ash... you are a woman of substance."

And there are others too, who, like me, do not understand why Ash gaining or losing weight is a matter of debate at all. Oh ya, we do love her for the responses she evokes — and if I can let you in on a secret, the pageviews we get (that, in internet terms is equivalent to the TRPs)!

You can also roll over to the comments section and read the comments!

But let's get back to Ash, and her weighty issues

In his blog on India Today Lada Guruden Singh asks some valid questions. Has Aishwarya spoken or endorsed anything related to being slim and or being curvy? Has she argued that she hasn't gained weight? Has she duped her advertising/business partners by not delivering what she promised? Have we got any news about the Bachchan family being upset about Aishwarya's weight gain? None of the above. Why must we go after her about her weight? She has just become a mother. About five months back. Almost everyone knows it wasn't an easy pregnancy for her. So, why are we being graceless towards the lady who is hands down the most popular female Indian export to the world? We couldn't agree more. Read the full blog here.

Oh, come on, she's touching 39 and is taking a well earned break from acting. For over two decades she has been the face of the nation at various film awards. Now, she is on a break- a well deserved one. So why should she work on her weight/looks if her doctors, her family and the diva herself is comfortable being a bit curvy? After all size zero is out and curves are the in word in Bollywood now, right?

Aishwarya Rai deserves praise not critcism

The recent criticism of Aishwarya Rai by some Indian media is staggering.

They have said the actress and new mum is letting down her fans by not shedding the weight gained during her pregnancy fast enough.

  1. ?Aishwarya Rai was criticised for not losing weight

Aishwarya Rai was criticised for not losing weight

How could anyone view this as valid criticism of a new mum, even one who is in the public eye as much as Rai?

A newborn requires constant attention, 24 hours a day.

The only way that Rai could return swiftly to her trim figure would be to hit the gym for hours on end. This would require handing over the care of her child to someone during key months when mother and baby are supposed to bond. I'm sure husband Abhishek Bachchan is around to help, however anatomy dictates that there are some things a man cannot do.

Of course, Rai is up against plenty of other celebs who did just that, for example Victoria Beckham.

Yet, you have feel these stars are sacrificing a lot for their careers. There will always be another record, another film or another fashion show. Put those early months of your child's life will only happen once.

And surely these celebrity mums are talented enough to still be in demand after a break of six months to a year? In some cases, perhaps not.

However, in the case of Rai, there is little doubt her fans will still be there and she should be receiving praise for putting her family first, not criticism.

I'm so excited about her Cannes appearance. I would she stuns everyone and ends the criticism for good. But knowing that it's AIshwarya--the criticism will never stop.

But so glad so many people are supporting her.

After Sonali Bendre, Lara Dutta, and Sameera Reddy, it is Pooja Bhatt's turn to support Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's weight gain after she became a mom.

'Find this debate about Aishwarya Rai's weight inane. She is a gorgeous woman period. All the ugly people being malicious should take a hike!' she tweeted.

Thanks VG! I didn't know this was you, but makes me feel so good reading so much support for her, especially by her friends and colleagues.

However, I also hope she can eventually control her weight if it isn't a hormonal issue.

All of those cursing her for her failure in losing weight post her delivery can go to hell! What on earth have they got to do with her weight? It's so damn obvious that she's gonna need some time to get back in form. Pathetic behavior 😡
