Masand's Verdict: Past imperfect

Dangerous Ishq

Rating: 1.5

May 11, 2012

Cast: Karisma Kapoor, Rajneesh Duggal, Jimmy Shergill, Divya Dutta, Ravi Kissen, Arya Babbar

Director: Vikram Bhatt

From matching Govinda's razor-sharp comic timing in so many David Dhawan entertainers, to delivering sincere, heartfelt performances in films like Fizaa and Zubeidaa, Karisma Kapoor has had no shortage of opportunities to show off her acting chops. But returning after a hiatus in director Vikram Bhatt's laughably silly Dangerous Ishq, the actress is limited to gritting her teeth and mouthing inane lines.

Karisma stars as Sanjana, a supermodel and committed girlfriend who searches for clues in her past, when her industrialist boyfriend (Rajneesh Duggal sporting a single expression throughout) is kidnapped. Relying on 'visions' that offer her glimpses into her previous lives, Sanjana discovers she's had a doomed romantic connection with the same man over the ages. To solve the mystery of his kidnapping in the present day, she must first figure out who has been keeping them apart in their every birth.

From struggling through communal feuds in Partition-era Punjab, to facing betrayal from a trusted friend in Daulatabad during the Mughal rule, to spurning the advances of a sleazy senapati in 16th century Rajasthan…it's hard to keep a straight face as Sanjana rewinds to previous lifetimes, and the film in turn becomes increasingly preposterous. Despite its curious premise, the plot of Dangerous Ishq feels overstuffed and far too convenient, and as a result the film's central idea, of past life regression, is never convincingly conveyed.

If anything, the film is unintentionally comical, thanks in no small part to its clunky dialogue, bizarre characters, and ham-fisted direction. Save for some tacky special effects and a few badly done explosions, Bhatt mostly resists the temptation to throw things at you in order to exploit the 3D, but the imagery here is so bland that the technology feels wasted.

Ambitious but seriously flawed, the film smacks of laziness in virtually all departments, and even Karisma Kapoor's earnest performance can't save the day. I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Vikram Bhatt's Dangerous Ishq. Plodding on for close to two hours and thirty minutes, this film will make you wish you'd knocked back a stiff one before taking your seat.

Alright, so at the behest of some of my friends and colleagues at work, I decided to cancel my pre-planned schedule for the evening and go for Dangerous Ishhq (DI) instead. I was a bit skeptical on getting a First Day, First Show ticket, considering the fact that Karishma Kapoor was making a comeback. Her comeback venture was a much-hyped affair, and I had convinced myself that all of my efforts to reach on time would go down the drain. The FDFS was scheduled to commence at 5:30 pm, which it did so on time. I conveniently reached the theater at 2:00 pm to buy the tickets in advance. I was surprised, rather shocked, to not see even a bird chirping around the theater's balcony. So, anyway, I proceed and purchased two tickets for myself and a friend, and decided to show up later. As Alex, my friend, and I arrived at the theater, we saw a handful of people discussing things related to KK's comeback and what not. By this time, I had started getting a little suspicious of the ticket sales. So Anyway, right before the movie started, Alex and I grabbed our popcorn and sodas and made ourselves comfortable on the seats.

The clock started ticking. 1... 2... 3... The theater started getting poured in by people... After about, like 50 people, there were no more admissions. So the movie started on time and all the ads and what not started... I cannot... and I REPEAT.. I cannot tell how disgustingly painful this garbage of a movie was!!! PATHETIC!!! Just pathetic!

Poor acting, poor dialog delivery, forced stunts, and above all, amateurish graphics made the movie a pain in the behind to watch. As KK was going through her past lives, she changed her identity with respect to culture and religion. So we had Sanjana (the present), Geeta (the first past), Salma (the second past), Paro (the third), and so on, and so forth. I was eagerly waiting for Margaret () and Parminder (🤪) to show up!! 🤢

Ranjneesh Duggal's nose looked worse than Koena Mitra's face after multiple surgeries. His face looked disproportionate throughout the movie. Arya Babbar's character was an important one, but was totally wasted due to pathetic acting and forced action. The later part of the first half totally lost my attention, and I couldn't sit through with the rest in comfort. I somehow managed to garner the courage to sit through the second half and watch it throughout.

The only saving grace of the movie was Karishma Kapoor's acting as Paro. Otherwise, for everything else, THIS MOVIE DOES NOT DESERVE ANY ACCOLADES.

I would rate it a 1 on a 1 - 5 scale. Please do yourself a favor and save a trip to a dreamland that would rather give you nightmares later on... OF WASTING YOUR HARD-EARNED CASH!

P. S.: Much apologies for any mistakes and what not, and for bearing with my first, official amateur attempt of writing a movie review.
Thank you!

Absolutely! Bad would only be a generic term here. It was PATHETIC. They should make a sequel now - Pathetic Ishhq, where they die and reincarnate again as zombies from Mars. 😡

RD's voice was again dubbed using a professional dubbing artiste - the same guy who dubbed the voice for Shareefudding in Jodhaa Akbar and Duggal's voice in 1920.

A beautifully unique script ruined by nonsensical actors. And yeah, i forgot to add, when KK first appeared on screen, a dead crowd sighed, no one cheered for her. 😕

Probably, becuz the script sounded promising, which I don't disagree with. It was a good script. It just got ruined becuz of actors like Rajneesh 'the cocky' Duggal and Jimmy 'the I dunno what the fudge I am still doing in Bollywood' Shergill. Otherwise, everything else was passable.

Yikes. Your review made me laugh though..especially I was eagerly waiting for Maragret and Parminder to show up 😆

Sigh. Whatever possessed Karishma to sign this film as her comeback film? It sounded pathetic from the moment it was announced..There is nothing going for it, Vikram Bhatt, 3D, weird horror type thriller, the male lead, the RELEASE DATE!...why couldn't she just let Saate Pe Satta be her comeback film? :(

@bold: that sucks.

Initially, when I saw the trailer for the first time, I felt it was something different & it may work. However, once I found out that the movie has a reincarnation based theme, I had huge doubts. I don't think anyone is interested in seeing such films anymore. Not to mention, if you are going to make such a film at least get better male leads.

I feel for Karishma..she should have been much wiser choosing her scripts. Such a film wasn't going to cut it as a mindblowing comeback for her.

🤣

Trust me, choco, the graphics were JUST PATHETIC. I couldn't blv it was the same VB that made 1920 and Haunted. Those movies were such a treat to watch. What the hell was he even thinking this time? Did he get a bit overwhelmed becuz Lolo was making a comeback, or what was it?

Just about everything in this movie was GAH!!!

I totally agree with everything you said. Yes, the only person I felt bad for was Lolo. You know, these types of thrillers or movies worked back in the 80s and 90s. They are trying to sell an expired product wrapped in a new packaging. That ain't gonna work! Arey, if you're doing that, at least have some dhang ke actors. Jeez!!
