It's not the problem with conservative values for me (I'm an American & hell my mom got a tattoo back in the '70s so NO I'm not afraid that a movie might show that some marriages don't work out or that some women just don't enjoy or plain suck at cooking)
What I miss and what I feel this article is addressing is that Indian films were much less demographic directed in the past. They were created with an eye to entertaining everybody and so they actually did.
Like Hollywood films from the early thirties or our Pixar films that are fun for kids AND adults through the use of wit and sparkling dialogue. You really don't need people stripped naked and doing the damned deed on the screen to entertain me. Hell isn't that what we have the internet for nowadays if we really want to see po*n?
I don't know about the rest of you but I've DONE the deed, no really, I know what it is and I honestly don't have to watch some actors simulating sex to have the old lightbulb go off and realize..."Hey! They're in love and together for the night...they had sex! Hey, what's that look like? Can they fake it for me or I won't truly understand it."
I mean if I'm that sad I should be watching effing Cartoon Network while my mother spoonfeeds me cream of rice.
But I really did like films that allowed one the benefit of assumed intelligence to know what sex was without having it shoved down your throat and even in Delhi Belly my son and I laughted more at the situations than at the allusions to oral sex.
I mean...okay...but the wit, the true cleverness was in the mad situations and that's someone everyone can enjoy---cross the board.
There's just so damned much in the world to separate people of different cultures and generations that it was great to have a cinematic tradition that could bring everyone, male, female, young and old together and be equally fun for all.
Now remember I say that as an American who has been exposed all her life to the factioning of the entertainment industry and the stereotyping of the different generations and races that come from such strong chasing after a demographic. That mess leads to its own self fulfilling prophecy in the long run when only a few people go to see this film and only a handfull go to see that one and every one is in a different room.
Choices are nice but so is the choice to all enjoy something well made and entertaining together---nothing needs to be conservative about that-just clever.

Some people might hate Biriyani...

Who?

May be a vegetarian who doesn't have the options like Chicken, Egg, Salmon, Hilsha, Carp, Mutton, Pork, Beef, Octopus, Squid, Turtle, ... ... Biriyanis.

Vegetables, Paneers, Soya pellets & Tofus are their options. So, it is probable that some of the vegetarians might feel Biriyanis are bland.

I think it's time for families to grow up! Why can't families watch say MNIK or Don 2 or 3 Idiots or Rockstar? The more I think about it the less I think films like those in the 80s and 90s were family films. They were mostly vulgar or melodramatic nonsense!

If we indeed want family films, we need to make films for children that parents and children under 18 can go and see together.
