The Dirty Picture Sustains Very Well On Monday

Tuesday 5th December 2011 11.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The Dirty Picture has sustained very well on Monday with collections around the 5 crore nett mark as per early estimates. This takes the five day total to around 34.25 crore nett for the Hindi version.

The film sustained well all over but the Maharashtra are was best with falls of just 30-40% from its Friday business. Delhi/UP also held up strongly as collections in UP were rock steady.

The collections on Tuesday should be similar to Monday or even show a bit of growth as it is a holiday for Muharram so the first week is likely to end in the 46-48 crore nett range and the film looking towards 70 crore nett for lifetime business.

The Dirty Picture gets the cash registers ringing

"It's a super hit!" That's the verdict of the trade circle about The Dirty Picture, which released on Friday.

Said to have cost producer Ekta Kapoor under Rs 20 crore, the Milan Luthria film has made money for everyone associated right from Anil Thadani who acquired the distribution rights for about Rs 22 crore to the other distributors he sold it to, across the country. Overseas also, the movie has improved Vidya Balan's star status.

Christening the film, The Lovely Picture, Komal Nahta, trade expert and editor of koimi.com said, "The Hindi version has netted Rs 29.75 crore while the Tamil-Telugu versions have made Rs 1.6 crore. Even on Monday, the morning and afternoon shows in many theatres were full."

Concluding that he sees the film netting Rs 60 crore, he said, "That means distributors' share of Rs 30 crore from India alone."

In the same vein, Amod Mehra, another trade veteran, attributes the movie' success to the promotions that connected with the audience immediately. "The music has worked well. And the content was strong," he observed, pointing out that had the content been just sleazy without a sound story, then it wouldn't have worked.

If one thought the movie would not have clicked so well in the northern and eastern parts of the country, because of the inspiration from South siren Silk Smitha, it'd be wrong. Delhi-based distributor Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts Ltd says that the film delivered more than their expectations.

"I thought it would net about Rs 23 crore in the first three days, but about Rs 30 crore is mind-blowing. A movie can't work so well just on the masses, but needs the gentry and the youth to come in to watch it too. Despite the 'A' rating, the film has done fabulously," he said.

Aditya Choksi of Indore-based Akshar Enterprises shares Ghai's opinion. He had expected the movie to do well in Central India, as he said, "I had faith in director Milan Luthria, the shock value of his subject and the correct promotion. When a film holds strong on Monday, it proves that content and right marketing are king. The first three days' numbers of this film are more than Rockstar and Desi Boyz."

On Tuesday too, the trade gurus are expecting the film to continue its good run, due to Muharram being a bank holiday. As Manoj Desai, Executive Director of Maratha Mandir and G7 Cineplex tells us, "Non-Muslim audience will come in to see the film that is already getting its repeat audience. People are enjoying the film and applauding often for many scenes and dialogue. And not to forget Vidya Balan, for the bold way in which she's portrayed the part of Silk."

Mehra is certain the film will continue to do well in its second weekend too, never mind Yashraj's Ladies VS Ricky Bahl with Ranveer Singh and Anuska Sharma releasing this Friday.

"Ladies VS Ricky Bahl is not looking great. So whatever numbers The Dirty Picture does in its second weekend is additional bonus. It's already done enough numbers to be a super hit," he concluded.

The Dirty Picture Collections Jump On Tuesday

Wednesday 7th December 2011 11.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The Dirty Picture got the benefit of Muharram on Tuesday as collections were around 5.75 crore nett as against the 5 crore nett on Monday. The film had jumps of 20-30% in places like UP, CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan while other areas jumped less but still most were better than Monday.

The film has so far collected around 40 crore nett in five days and is likely to have a 48 crore nett week one. Adding the regional version collections and it will be a 50 crore nett week.

The Dirty Picture is a huge hit in the Maharashtra area and should do a 14 crore distributor share in Mumbai circuit and a 2.50 crore distributor share in CP Berar which in the case of CP Berar is the same as films like Dhoom 2 and Raajneeti.

watched the movie yesterday..it was ok..I think they could have made it much better...the movie did not look realistic in some parts...and the movie ended up showing Silk as a bit of a loser...the movie seemed a lil pointless...1st half was good...2nd half ok...however Vidya Balan's acting was awesome! Tushar Kapur's character was stupid...as usual I liked Emran Hashmi!

While the film may be flawed in some aspects, Balan and her character are spotless. You don't leave the film sympathising with Silk, you accept that in her defeat lies her success. A life lived by one's own rules is a life well-lived, never mind a few years short.

this is an excerpt from a review. I don't think we were supposed to feel sorry for Silk but rather the story was told blatantly.
