Besides the song, dance and entertainment, there are some bonds of association with people and places in Pakistan that run deeper. In fact, superstar Shahrukh Khan roots can be traced back to Pakistan. His cousin greeted the NDTV team with immense hospitality as he reminisced memories of the King Khan in his childhood days. "At 14 years, we never knew that he'd become such a big star. He did not know Hindi or Urdu and used to find it difficult to understand," said Ameen Ali, Shahrukh's family friend. "Therefore his father used to translate and tell him things at that time. He used to be very fond of singing The narrow bylanes of the Kissa Khwanee Bazaar also share a deep bond with Bollywood. A haveli, which was home to Prithviraj Kapoor, and its grandeur bears witness to the status the Kapoors enjoyed. It is an emotional bond that continues till today. "When they left us, they left us with a lot of memories. Even now when Rishi and Shashi Kapoor came some time back, they went to their respective places and took back some of the Pakistani soil as remembrance," said Iftikhaar-ud-deen, a neighbour. Somewhere in Peshawar also lie fading memories of other Bollywood icons such as Dilip Kumar, Amjad Khan and Anil Kapoor. The ties will always defy the political and religious divide between the two countries. |
