The posters scream Soundtrack: Based on a true story. On watching, one is compelled to believe in the highs and lows of DJ Raunak Kaul's journey, whereas the fact is that he is actually only a fictional character. The film itself is a remake of the 2004 Canadian Indie film It's All Gone Pete Tong based on the legendary DJ Frankie Wilde — a hotshot Ibiza DJ who had fought his way to the top and then mysteriously disappeared from the music scene. The filmmakers make no bones about the film being a remake and credits are duly mentioned too.
No doubt that the groundwork is done already, but despite being a remake, the director shows sparks of creativity and talent, adapting it perfectly to fit the Indian music scene. The film's story is taken forward using 'talking head sequences' with real artists, mishmashed with a few fake characters too that spin a believable tale, and lend the film a false sense of authenticity.
Raunak Kaul's (Rajeev) passion for music is well-established in the opening shots itself. His uncle (Yatin Karyekar) helps him land a job in a popular nightclub where he starts DJing and soon becomes a crowd favourite. The owner Charlie (Mohan) impressed with his talent promises him the sky and even sets up a studio for him in Alibag where he leads the life of a rockstar with girlfriend Shonali (Mrinalini). It's as much a workplace as it is a haven for wild women and wilder parties. His ascent to the top as the most celebrated DJ in showbiz, also marks his simultaneous descent in the sex, booze, drugs and rock-n-roll kind of lifestyle.
Combined with insecurity and fear of failing like his musician dad had, see him create his own demon — (a joker replaces a badger from the original here) — that follows him around. The lifestyle takes a toll on his music and his career hits rock-bottom when he goes deaf. Frustrated, severely depressed and desperate, he locks himself in a buffered room for weeks. Finally, he decides to exorcise his inner demon and chases out the 'joker', a metaphorical way of showing him take back the reins of his life.
On his U-Turn to life he meets Gauri (Soha) a lip-reading teacher, who gives him the incentive to carry on. What follows is Raunak's struggle to not let his hearing disability keep him away from his passion of music.
Paul Kaye, the actor who played the DJ in the original won a few awards for his performance, Rajeev should be no different. It's a dream role for any actor and lends itself to some very intense moments that Rajeev does full justice to. Soha and Mrinalini do their bit well, as do Yatin and Mohan. The film's obviously made on a shoe-string budget, but the director doesn't let that affect the production quality. Clashing with a multistarrer, this one clearly proves that interesting cinema doesn't need moolah, exotic locales or mega-stars. Go watch!

A re-make of Canadian movie "It's all gone Pete Tong", the Bollywood version, Soundtrack, revolves around Raunak Kaul (Rajeev Khandelwal) who comes to Mumbai in search of a dream career. Soon he becomes a famous DJ and soon falls to the vices of any city — sex and drugs.
When he looses his hearing, he meets Gauri (Soha Ali Khan), who is also hearing impaired but an expert in lip reading. The story revolves around how she instills confidence in him to produce another album with the feel of music, if not hearing it, the way Beethoven would have produced the legendary music that cherishes many admirers even to this day.

The big one from Hollywood this week is 'Real Steel', with Hugh Jackman and an American science fiction plot in which robots are the star attraction of the boxing arena.
Of the movies from Bollywood, there's 'Rascals' which brings together Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt in a David Dhawan caper, and 'Love Breakups Zindagi', the first production of Dia Mirza and Zayed Khan. The one with the positive reviews is 'Soundtrack', which stars Rajeev Khandelwal and Soha Ali Khan.
Other movies released this weekend include 'Soundtrack', '30 Minutes Or Less' and 'Jane Eyre'.

An official remake of the Canadian film It's All Gone Pete Tong, Soundtrack begins sweetly, with images of music in everyday life'the clanking of a can or a mobike's vroom. We are introduced to the protagonist, music man Raunak Kaul (Rajeev), through piece-to-camera sets from people who've their own unique impressions of him. Raunak is a reckless, self-destructive genius in a profligate world of drugs, sex and rock-'n-roll. It's in these initial portions that the film feels awkward and amateurish, especially in the depiction of Raunak's hallucinations of Johnny Joker (a nod to the Shweta Shetty song). Things take too long to build up but mercifully fall into place midway, just as Raunak faces a major crisis: losing his ability to hear. Then on, Soundtrack plays out as an inspirational, "triumph of the human spirit" film about confronting a life of silence yet being able to discern a rhythm and create music out of it. Helping Raunak is Gauri (Soha), herself born deaf. Soundtrack breaks new ground in presenting this love story between two differently abled people without any overt pity. It's endearing, playful and filled with laughter and banter. A heartwarming tale that makes you want to shed your cynicism and believe in love.

Finally got to see soundtrack yesterday!!!😃
What I did not do to get a glimpse of him...literally bunked my college after the first half, went to get tickets to go home during the diwali vacation, and then went to Inox to watch our most awaited movie soundtrack😆.
Will put my opinion abt the movie in short...The following pts are written down by me both as a rajeevian and an ordinary movie going person...they are not meant to offend anyone😊.
Good Points:
1) Rajeev is awesome, marvellous, wonderful, mindblowing and u can add as much as adjectives u want to praise him...we know what kind of a person he is...and he created a complete different persona on screen...Raunak Kaul an alcohol, drug and women addict person who spends the most reckless life possible on earth. Our RK stands out as a gr88 actor again with this character.👏.
2) Soha did an wonderful job in that character too...although her part is tooo short...still she will leave a mark in ur mind...her calling raunak as "Aunak" is something to look out for😆.
3)Rajeev-Soha chemistry may surprise some ppl...they did an awesome job...the first meet, her teaching him,his sudden jump towards her to kiss her, his taking her to a date, the scene where rajeev is trying to do lip reading of others around them in a restaurant, etc are refreshing. The songs like "khullam khulla pyar karenge hum dono" and "o raahi" are good to watch too😆.
4) The first opening scene is a treat to watch...Rajeev looks admiring but the picturisation was good too...It showed how raunak could hear music in everything...music can be made even from bus, auto and taxi's horns, from the sound of train,a bhelpuri centre or even there is music when a "chaayewaala" makes tea.
5)The quotes of Beethoven in between the movie were well chosen and fitted the situations of the movie.
6) Lastly, U want to see how he looks or sounds like when he is drunk???😆Soundtrack is a must watch then...there are some really funny scenes of drunk rajeev...especially the scene where his sitting on the roof of his terrace and his chacha calls him to come down...a funny scene indeed😆
Bad Points:
1) The script of the movie is a lil bit "dheela"...
2) First half of the movie is dragged...after a certain point it starts boring you. Second half is interesting and it gets over too soon.😕
3) The dialogues are predictable...they could have written dialogues which could have given more weightage to the movie...an inspirational movie or character should have inspirational dialogues too...but unfortunately no dialogue stays in ur mind when u leave the theatre.
At the end I will say another thing...Rajeev looked like a commercial movie actor finally in this film...he looked good and handsome in aamir and shaitaan...but in soundtrack he looked gorgeous...☺️
A heart-warming and inspiring tale of hope, passion and desire – Soundtrack has its heart in the right place and that's where it scores the highest points. Although it's a remake of the Hollywood film 'It's All Gone Pete Tong', the Hindi version succeeds in creating a desired impact. Written by Neerav Ghosh, Rajeev Gopalakrishnan and Chintan Gandhi the trio has penned a screenplay with layers all connected and the dialogues are real to the core. Although the film gets a bit depressing at times but the mood elevates in no time. First time director Neerav Ghosh holds promise and knows his job well. He depicts an edgy, modern day portrayal of India's most prolific musician, DJ and traces his alcohol, drug and sex fuelled meteoric rise, as he battles his internal demons and a damaging handicap with rare understanding and in the most matured way. Of the performances, Rajeev Khandelwal enacts his role with gusto and deserves a pat on his back for an outstanding act. Rajeev has truly evolved as an actor and we would like to see him in more films. Soha Ali Khan is natural and brings in a certain amount of vulnerability to her character. Mrinalini Sharma looks her part and does justice to it. Mohan Kapoor is a pleasant surprise. He puts up a brilliant act and confident act. Yatin Karyekar is likeable. Ankur Tewari and Siddharth Coutto lend good support. Music by Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale is soothing (especially the 'Jannat' song) and goes with the theme of the movie. Lyrics are appropriate and well worded. Cinematography by Anshuman Mahaley is good and captures the beaches of Bangkok well. Sound by Ali Merchant is just perfect. Editing by Sanjay Roderick and Amgar Vyas fine. Costumes by Faheba Khan suits the need of the film well. All said and done, 'Soundtrack' is a film which cannot be just seen, you will also 'feel' it. Strongly recommended! |
