Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a cinematic treat which we all would love to visit dobara. It is another brand new expression for the new generation slogan, 'Live life in full today - tomorrow may not come'. It is all about living outside the box and the film meaningfully packaged it that way.

It is a story about a bachelor holiday 3 youngsters took which will change the direction of their life journey. Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) is a financial trader, the future generation tension baby who doesn't have a minute to pose and think about present. Imraan (Farhan Akhtar) is a copy writer for an advertising firm, at heart he wants to be a poet. Kabir (Abhay Deol) works in his father's construction company and his mrriage is fixed with Natasha (Kalki Koechlin). The three friends plan a trip to Spain, to get some fresh air by breaking the patterns. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is all about how they will change their perspective about life, throwing away fear to make bold resolutions to move forward and live life in full.

The writers, Reema Kagti & Zoya Akhtar did a fantastic job in writing an interesting screen play with sufficient space for visual enrichment. Dialogue writer, Farhan Akhtar doesn't disappoint either. However, it is the director Zoya Akshtar who made the efforts more worthwhile. This film will be a golden feather in Zoya's career. Super excellent director with imaginative narration, the director leaves no stones unturned and gets the best from the cast and crew. The movie doesn't hurry to say a story but move in the pace the viewer wishes to travel. The viewer is treated like a traveler where the director assumed the responsibility of designing a road for the journey.Zoya Akhtar applauds and more for this brilliant work; Unique!

The movie gaves an equal space to all 3 leading characters and 2 leading ladies (though the third leading lady took a back seat). It must have been a hard decision but it pays off. The friendship equilibrium gets a high power which turns to be the strength of the movie. Hrithik Roshan gets a fresh new look in this movie which is cool, young and bold. His performance is also very good. Farhan Akhtargives an effortless performance where Abhay Deol performs to his reputation. Katrina Kaif's character has less shadows and the performance doesn't take too much from her. Katrina's pairing with Hrithik is cool on screen. Kalki Koechlin impresses again with her! Nassaruddin Shah gives a brief and very good performance which in fact hides the weakness in character creation.

Cinematography is super excellent in ZNMD. The camera moves as if knowing the mind of the audience. Where you wish to see an image which just passed you, the camera stops there to bring the beauty exclusively to you, so we feel. In air, land or water, Carlos Catalan, the cinematographer never disappoints. Beautiful landscapes, brilliant underwater scenes, breathtaking mid air exhibitions, cinematography leaves a mark and more.

Songs are quite good for its meaningful lyrics by Javed Akhtar and music by Shankar Eshan Loy which makes it more interesting which helps the story telling. Choreography is colourful and adequate.

On the minus side, the subject has been told several times earlier. The pace gets slower in the second half beginning and a bit of editing would have helped here - say 10 minutes. There are poems recited in background, in frequent intervals which disrupts the flow at times (some other places they are good though). The situation Kabir is in could have been better told with a bit of modification in the story for a better impact. Then-wait, the movie never depended on drama to create or keep the curiosity and all sins are pardoned.

Overall Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is for your eyes and heart. It is a special film which doesn't come often, which entertains and gives the experience of a tour. There are fun, a lot of youthfulness and moreover thoughts for life. It is one movie which I can tell you, do not watch it, feel it!!

My rating: 4.5 stars

Story: Kabir's (Abhay Deol) just proposed to his girlfriend Natasha (Kalki Koechlin), but before he gets married, he wants to celebrate his bachelor's party. Now he wants a special bachelor's party which involves an extended road trip in picturesque Spain with best buddies, writer Imraan (Farhan Akhtar) and stock broker Arjun (Hrithik Roshan). The trip begins and the trio meet a host of interesting people which includes Laila (Katrina Kaif), the delightful diving instructor. But more interestingly, they learn to combat their insecurities, fears and shed the emotional baggage of the past in what turns out to be a coming-of-age trip for the threesome.

Movie Review: Zoya Akhtar's Spain odyssey demands just one thing from you: that you slip into adventure mode and then go with the flow... Rest assured, you're in for a merry ride, with loads of thrills, emotional banter, romance and camaraderie between a host of characters who seem to be having as much fun as you.

There seems to be one small little snag however. The first half of the film is low on drama and proceeds as a touristy piece on Spain. You do get somewhat restless watching the three friends check in and out of hotels, rent cars, play juvenile pranks and indulge in traditional adventure sports like deep sea diving and sky diving. Of course, there is a lot of friendly bantering too between the friends, as Farhan Akhtar and Hrithik Roshan battle ghosts from the past. And yes, a dash of romance as Katrina sashays into their life as the free-spirited waif with a wild side to her winsome self.

It's the second half of the film which emerges as a scintillating insight into friendship, emotional growth and bonding. All the three protagonists use the trip to exorcise ghosts from the past and emerge as free, unburdened souls who are ready to face life with renewed vigour. And the bull run at the end of the film becomes a metaphor for the unburdening of repressed fears and unresolved conflicts. But the beauty of the film lies in the fact that it handles all this emotional funda in a poetic, lighthearted, breezy style which brings a smile to your face.

In terms of performances, it's hard to pinpoint your favourite since all three pitch in stellar acts. If Abhay is the anchor of the group, Farhan's funster role is full of beans and Hrithik's metamorphosis from uptight, money-minded stock broker to carefree vagabond is a class act. Katrina is her usual effervescent self while Kalki is cute, despite being heralded with a 'chudail alert' (witch alert). Added embellishments are the pacy dialogues (Farhan Akhtar), the magnificent poetry (Javed Akhtar) and the rich cinematography (Carlos Catalan) which transforms Spain into vistas of colour.

Director Zoya Akhtar follows up Luck By Chance with another sensitive and entertaining study of people, even as she gives Bollywood it's first full blown contemporary road movie.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara review - ZNMD Review - Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Movie review - Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif Movie Review:

Javed Akhtar's magical poetries, impeccable performances by the cast, scenic and serene Spain, and a message, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara has all the ingredients that will hit the right chord with the audience.

Zoya Akhtar's film is about three friends; Kabir Dewan (Abhay Deol), who runs a family owned construction business and is just about to get married to his ladylove Natasha (Kalki Koechlin); Arjun (Hrithik Roshan), a financial broker who lives to earn big bucks and peacefully retire after the age of 40; and Imraan (Farhan Akhtar), an advertising copywriter, a playboy who is looking for his estranged father. They make a pact in college that they will go on an escapade before either of them ties the knot and would indulge in three adventure sports. Whatever one decides the other two have to abide by. And there on starts their exploratory road trip.

As the title suggest, the film throughout is about overcoming your fears and live life like there's no tomorrow. Arjun's fear of Scuba diving, Imran's fear for Sky Diving and finally the San Fermin festival, the Bull race to get over the fear of us all, Death are just ways to remind us to live life to the fullest. The Tomatino festival, Senorita number, Arjun falling in love with Laila (Katrina Kaif) and all the adventure sports are added attractions to enhance the cinematic experience of a viewer. Farhan Akhtar is stupendous with his comic timing and one liners and also astounds in the sequence he meets his dad Salman Habib. Hrithik Roshan is a natural stunner and sure this kind of a mesmerizing performance was expected from him.

After Prakash Jha's 'Rajneeti', it was Zoya Akhtar who could bring out an actor out of Katrina Kaif. As a Fashion Apprentice who takes leave every year to teach Scuba Diving, Katrina enthralls and gives her best performance. Kalki as a possessive fianc does her part well. Naseeruddin Shah and Deepti Naval's cameos are unblemished too. The film is a pack and parcel of sensitive as well as sidesplitting jiffies that make you cry as well as laugh. Teaching you a lesson or two in life, 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' will connect to almost every individual who will relate to the snags its lead stars are facing.

Music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is absorbing enough but its Carlos Catalan's cinematography that truly impresses. Though, the film has a striking similarity with Aamir Khan's 'Dil Chahta Hai' and feels lugged at quite a few moments, the film is definitely not worth missing.

Rating: 3.5/5

Gawd. Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara was embarrassingly bad. Wasn't gonna review, now tempted to write something after all.

uh-oh

  • Ranvir Shorey (actor): Just watched 'ZNMD'. It's a poignant celebration of life. And Spain! Made me feel better, even if only for a couple of hours.
  • Divya Dutta (actress): Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara lovely film and I'm in love with Farhan Akhtar!
