I think i watched 3 bollywood films last year in total, and this year, i've watched one thus far; MNIK. MNIK was horrible by the way, but that is a story for another day. 😆 I've completely lost interest in bollywood films. I absolutely LOVE Bollywood music though.
As far as big budget movies go, I think the indian audience is out of that stage where they would watch any crap just for a glimpse of their favourite stars. Yes, that includes SRK, Hrithik, Akshay and all the other bollywood bigwigs. They seek a good plot with good actors, and pure entertainment more than anything else. Which is why films like Udaan fared better than Raavan, Thankyou, and Guzarish.

Actually the old black and white hindi movies had amazing stories and amazing songs. They should bring back those kind of movies but of course with color

And in bollywood we lack creativity many of the directors just goes and copies other movies in stead of creating something new and in this way take a chance maybe the audience will actually like it, because I am sure everyone will get bored of movies when they get repeated.

But I am glad that finally small budget movies are getting appreciated and more directors now do small budget movies.

I do agree! I think directors should consider new and rising talent b/c there is a lot of it and I think new work needs to be recognized and appreciate at award shows...b/c ppl like my mom sometimes watch films that win awards...bad idea...but some do!

And I agree...thank god for this new small budget phase...I'm so glad films like Udaan did so well!

If only the ideas, scripts, and stories that i have in mind were ever taken to a director, and the casting that i thought of could ever be. But i agree that the typical bollywood movie is all about dancing, a nice story, and looking good, so i guess never.

I so agree...I don't think item numbers are needed in films like Omkara or Once Upon a Time In Mumbai...where the drama and story is the main focus...it's just a waste of time!

I wish there was a non-music genre of films...where only the story would be the focus...b/c some ppl like me would appreciate it!

The problem with India's 'sci-fi' movies is that they try to squeeze in a love story that totally makes the plot go haywire...what should be really action-packed becomes a traditional film with a hero and heroine barely kissing in the fields

I enjoyed Bollywood movies when I was growing up...so much so that I NEVER watched a Hollywood movie. Hence I was always out of the loop with my friends...but for the past 3 years, Bollywood has tanked so bad that I see Hollywood movies all the time. Prime example: I just saw the Hangover 2 yesterday...it's hilarious if you enjoy its (really) crude humor😆

Like Eraser, the only thing that keeps me tied to this industry is the music, and that's because Bollywood mostly wants singers who can sing for all of their songs and composers that can at the minimum compose a good tune or something that's danceable
😆

So true! If only sci-fi could actually be like sci-fi with special effects and no random songs and love stories!!

I guess I'm the opposite...I grew up watching BW films, but something just attracted me to HW...I was only 5 when I saw Singin' In the Rain for the 1st time, and 9 when I saw Schindler's List and Sophie's Choice...from a young age I loved HW films...and now I hardly watch BW films...never in theaters unless it's an Aishu film or an Abhay Deol film!

And YES!!! Hangover 2 was so funny...and when I watch a film like that and then watch a Hindi comedy (not taken any names...don't wanna start a war)..but I just see such a drastic change in the sense of humor and type of comedy and don;t find BW movies funny!

Crytal very well said on your first post. I totally agree with everything you said. I also don't keep high expectations from bollywood films anymore. But once in a while, I do come across a film I like. From recent times I liked films like New York, Wanted, Kurbaan, and Once Upon A time in Mumbia...all these films are not classic or pathbreaking films, and yes they have many flaws some more than the other...but I enjoyed them. So I don't know about others, but am still not giving up on bollywood yet because there is gonna be one or two films that a person can enjoy. We can't expect every film to be good, even in hollywood only one or two films are good these days, most are crap. As much as I want to enjoy Just Go with it for Jennifer Anniston, that film was so medicore and crappy.

And yes I also watch hollywood more than bollywood currently. Before, I didn't even care about hollywood, but now I have no choice but to turn to hollywood for entertainment/well made films!

Well if you look at the year as a whole...HW does a way better job! For one, agree HW makes just as much crap...but even that crap I rate above the crap in BW! Like The Adjustment Bureau was disappointing, but not as disappointing as Thank You...one thing I do like is that awards actually acknowledge performances and none of that "if you come/perform/pay you get an award"...as a whole I still see the standards higher in HW!

But I do agree...just as many bad films are made in HW as BW...but if you look at India as a whole with all the Bengali, Punjabi, South Indian films...we do make good films, but not ALL get recognized at the same level as hindi films do! I guess it's a double edged sword!!!

Great topic G! Well I was thinking in the purana zamana (old times) they had family films, with huge families and all. 😳 And now they have art films or films that give a lesson. Example - MNIK, Raajneeti, Guzaarish, 3 Idiots, etc...but the hype time is over with films like SIK and Welcome honestly...
