2003
Priyanka Chopra
This former Miss India and a Sensational Debut winner (For Andaz) has something about her presence on screen that makes directors want to sign her on. So the highlights being Aitraaz for which she won the Best Actor in a Negative Role trophy and Fashion for which she bagged the Best Actress trophy. Seven years later, there still is no itch. No sign of her relationship with stardom waning. Way to go !
Genelia D'souza
This chirpy girl next door made her debut with Tujhe Meri Kasam. And then disappeared that side of the Vindhyas to become a huge star. Her comeback to Hindi cinema was marked by Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Genelia D'Souza is an actress waiting to discover herself.
Irfan Khan
A regular on television and in minor roles in some films in the '90s, he made a forceful impact in Vishal Bhardwaj's Maqbool. He was underplayed, dark and subtle and brought Macbeth to life. And his career in films. And he took home Filmfare trophies for his performances in Haasil and Life..In A Metro.
John Abraham
Yes he just maybe remembered for that lean mean bod and that ass that possibly became more famous than the film (Dostana) itself but John Abraham is possibly the last of the all male stars. Nothing metrosexual about him. Not even when he had rebonded hair in his first film Jism. Yes the same one that shot him to fame.
Emraan Hashmi
Kissing king. The one with stupendous luck when it comes to his songs. Bad boy. Emraan Hashmi may have made his debut in the tepid Footpath but it was Murder that fetched him eyeballs. If there ever was an actor so perched on the brink of stardom and yet not quite there, it's Emraan. But never say never.
Riteish Deshmukh
He debuted in Tujhe Meri Kasam (along with rumoured girlfriend Genelia D'Souza) but Ritesh Deshmukh has displayed his flair of comedy time and again. He is not your average leading man but he is the guy who will make you laugh. A lot!
Chitrangda Singh
All people could talk about during her debut film Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi was how much she resembled the late Smita Patil. Such impossible benchmarks notwithstanding, Chitrangda Singh really made an impact and then did a disappearing act. Only to resurface recently. Watch this space.
Shahid Kapoor
Sensational Debut winner, cute as a pin, bright as a 1000 watt bulb and fresh off the rack. A new boy-next-door was born with Shahid Kapoor in the college caper Ishq Vishk. He displayed spontaneity and talent and there has truly been no looking back ever since.
Boman Irani
He has an innate quirkiness that the camera and the audience love. And he can play almost anything - a menacing dad, land shark, authoritarian doctor or principal… And if you watch his Let's Talk on the one hand and the Munnabhai series on the other, you will know that versatility is not always about being obvious and over the top. Small wonder then that he won the Best Supporting Actor Award for 3 Idiots.
2004
Mallika Sherawat
She shot to fame with her 17 kisses in Khwaish. Though no one cared about the film they did care about the girl who said she was Viagra for the box office when Murder became a hit. Mallika Sherawat became queen of sex, soundbyte and sensation. So she may be part of hissstory currently but the girl has balls. That no one doubts.
Ayesha Takia
She was angelic, hot and totally spontaneous in her first film Tarzan The Wonder Car and it earned her the Sensational Debut Award. She was brilliant in Socha Na Tha and even more in Dor, her career's best to date. And before she could really take off, she tied the knot. Ah well...
2005
Abhay Deol
The other Deol. Who didn't have that swashbuckling debut but a rather quiet sweet one with Socha Na Tha. And if Dev D shot him to fame and fans it's because Abhay's screen presence that has a nonchalance and cockiness that may not be all be just for the big screen.
Shreyas Talpade
This was an immensely satisfactory debut if there was one. A wonderful film (Iqbal) about a deaf-mute boy who becomes a cricketer, Shreyas Talpade made the role his own. And everyone sat up to his talent. Of late he's mired in some mediocre mess but we hope to see his true merit soon.
Kunal Kapoor
Dishy and dreamy, he was an instant hit with the girls when his debut Meenaxi-A Tale Of Two Cities hit the silver screen. It tanked but he soon resurfaced in an impressive role in Rang De Basanti. Now he may be lying low a bit, but come on Kunnu, show us what you can do.
Katrina Kaif
Boom not withstanding this was definitely a girl who can give you a bang for your buck (no puns intended whatsoever) where sex appeal and glamour are concerned. And while no one really worries about her acting chops as long as she can do a Sheila ki jawani the way she did, all's good.
Vidya Balan
She was chosen for the role after much debate and doubt on the part of Vidhu Vinod Chopra. But Pradeep Sarkar knew he had his Parineeta. And she had her Sensational Debut trophy. Vidya Balan as has been said many times before ushered in an age when beauty is about being simple and real. And the roles she has portrayed hence have mostly been strong and backed by thought like Paa, Ishqiya and the recent No One Killed Jessica. Hence the Best Actress Award for Paa.
2006
Shahana goswami
Abundant talent. If she really made a mark in Rock On!!! and won the Filmfare Best Actress (Critics) Award then it was only because Shahana Goswami really stood out with her conviction.
Kangna Ranaut
So she has made a mark playing troubled neurotic characters. Why not? Kangna Ranaut does them so well. This waif-like (well not any more) actress really had everyone's attention right from her debut Gangster for which she won the Sensational Debut Award. And the Supporting Actress trophy for Fashion. She is here to stay.
