Did someone mention Kamal Hassan in the cheating husbands...
Kamal Hassan-If you marry a man who cheats on his wife, you'll be married to a man who cheats on his wife. That's the lesson Sarika must have learnt from her life. Kamal cheated on Vani Ganpathy, his first wife, with Sarika and after a painful divorce Sarika got married to Kamal thinking hers would be a happily-ever-after story. Little did she know years later Kamal would cheat on her with someone else. His extra-marital affair with actress Simran Bagga resulted in Sarika filing for a divorce.

Bollywood lives and loves

Deepa Gumaste | January 16, 2003 16:13 IST

And they lived happily ever after is an all too familiar denouement for Bollywood.

In the end, the hero and heroine overcome several seemingly insurmountable hurdles and, more often than not, blissfully walk into the sunset. Interestingly, many of these joyous endings spilled onto real life. In fact, the loJaya, Amitabh Bachchanve stories of film stars, their secret weddings, illicit affairs, heartache, separation and reunion can provide innumerable plots for the screen.

In 1954, Dev Anand proposed marriage to Taxi Driver costar Kalpana Kartik. One afternoon, the screen duo tied the knot during lunch on the film's set.

Equally dramatic was Shammi Kapoor's wedding with the glamorous Geeta Bali. Fearing parental opposition, the couple had a secret ceremony at the Banganga temple in south Mumbai at dead of night!

In 1957, when Mehboob Khan was shooting Mother India, Nargis was trapped in a fire on the set. Her gallant costar Sunil Dutt jumped to her rescue. A grateful Nargis -- who was playing Dutt's mother in the film -- graciously consented to be his wife.

Not all love stories of the time ended in matrimony. Madhubala and Dilip Kumar's relationship was thwarted by her father Ataullah Khan who did not want his daughter to marry the Pathan. Eventually, she married Kishore Kumar. In 1966, Dilip Kumar, then 44, tied the knot with Saira Banu, who was exactly half his age, 22.

The 1970s saw a fresh burst of star relationships. In 1971 or thereabouts Jaya Bhaduri -- already a star with Guddi -- fell in love with another newcomer Amitabh Bachchan and signed four films with him.

Soon after Zanjeer made Amitabh -- a flop until then -- a star the couple planned to go on a celebratory trip to London. But Amitabh's mother Teji was keen they married before they went on holiday. Jaya put her career on the backburner after their children Shwetambari and Abhishek were born in 1974 and 1976 respectively. The marriage survived Amitabh's reported relationship with Rekha through much of the late 1970s. And this family drama tumbled onto the screen when Jaya worked in Yash Chopra's Silsila alongside her husband and Rekha.

Another superstar who had a sudden wedding was Rajesh Khanna. India's first real superstar had women writing him letters in blood and swooning at his sight Elvis style. Kaka, as he was called, dumped girlfriend Anju Mahendru and married 16-year-old Dimple Kapadia in 1973. Raj Kapoor's Bobby had just released, and Dimple was a huge star herself. After nine tumultuous years, the couple parted ways and Dimple returned to showbiz with Ramesh Sippy's Sagar.

After her Bobby costar Rishi Kapoor starred in half-a-dozen films with Neetu Singh they wed in 1980. A few years ago, this fairytale marriage showed the first cracks when Neetu allegedly filed a complaint with the police against her husband for harassment. The storm seems to have passed and today, Rishi says they are happy and together again.

Another duo that had a long screen innings before settling down to marriage was Dharmendra and Hema Malini. They acted in 30 films! together before the dream girl -- who had turned down Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar -- finally consented to Dharamji's entreaties and became his second wife. She continued with her career, but never acted with him again.

Smita Patil took a leaf from Hema's book and found her soulmate in already married costar, Raj Babbar. After acting in half-a-dozen films with him, she proclaimed him her husband. A few weeks after the birth of their son Prateek in November 1986, Smita died suddenly. Raj Babbar later returned to his wife, theatre personality Nadira Babbar.

Mithun Chakraborty married Yogeeta Bali -- who was once married to Kishore Kumar -- surprising many people in the industry. Though the marriage hit rough weather thanks to the star's alleged indiscretions, it has survived to this day.

In the decade of the star sons, Sanjay Dutt married relatively unknown actress Richa Sharma, Aamir Khan and Reena DuttJackie Shroff wooed and won over one-film wonder Ayesha Shroff, while her Teri Bahon Mein costar and Nutan's son Mohnish Behl married another lesser known actress Ektaa Sharma. Saif Ali Khan defied convention and took the plunge with the gregarious Amrita Singh, several years his senior.

One of Bollywood's most-anticipated weddings took place four years ago when Kajol draped a green nine-yard sari and settled down with long-time boyfriend Ajay Devgan.

And just when showbiz thought Akshay Kumar would never relinquish his Casanova image, he stumped everyone with a rather hurried wedding with Twinkle Khanna, Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia's daughter. This, after he was linked with Pooja Batra, almost married Raveena Tandon and proclaimed his love for Shilpa Shetty.

Last year Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta -- neighbours who fell in love long before he became a star-- decided to file for divorce after over a decade of marriage. Bollywood's new find Vivek Oberoi broke off his engagement with Gurpreet Singh after over five years of being together.

Now comes the shocking news of Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor breaking off their engagement. No one knows why the relationship -- which seemed to give Amitabh Bachchan so much happiness and satisfaction -- came unstuck. The only comment has come from Karisma's aunt Neetu Singh who confirmed the development and said it was truly sad.

Back in the early 90's.... Neetu had registered a case of assault at the police station and had walked out of the marriage and filed for divorce... Then Krishna Kapoor her MIL and the others covinced her to come back for the sake of her kids....
and once in 1997 a caller called the cops at 3 AM in the morning from the Kapoor house saying its Neetu Kapoor and complained that her husband was beating her in the influence of liquor...When the cops reached their place they were met by Rishi who said Neetu was sleeping and shld not be disturbed....which was again denied the next day and the case was not pursued....
and around the same time Stardust came with the news on the Intimate friendship between Neetu and Ena Sharma ( Richa Dutt's sister and Sanjay Dutt's SIL ) which was again denied by Rishi...
and also there was news of Neetu and Ena Sharma spending time in London when Rishi was shooting in America....

Interview
"Someone Is Jealous"
Neetu Kapoor talks about herself, her family and the upside of being Rishi Kapoor's wife.
On the controversial call of November 1: "It is completely untrue. We were shocked, very shocked and we think it is the work of some envious element." On film magazines abuzz with their marital problems:"Yes, they have been writing for close to a year now. But it is really stupid. If we had a problem, we would face it. If there was divorce in the air or a split happening, it would be in the open. All this is ridiculous sensationalism." On the flip side of being the industry's most 'ideal' couple:"Sometime ago, a film magazine conducted a survey on the most perfect marriage and everyone mentioned the Rishi-Neetu marriage. Lekin kuch logon ko kissi ki khushi nahin dekhi jaati. I think this may be the work of someone who is jealous of our marriage—and of Rishi turning director. On Rishi Kapoor's disapproval of her friendship with Ena Sharma:"Ena lives in America and the last time I saw her was over a year ago. I don't know who is sensationalising these things. Besides during the last four-five months, I have been busy with my husband, assisting him with his film." "He is a wonderful husbend ,assisting him with his film."

On Rishi Kapoor: band, home-loving and very warm. We have a great marriage, great kids. In fact I am assisting Rishi with the scripting, the costumes and other aspects of Aa Ab Laut Chalein. Rishi Kapoor has never lifted his hand on his kids and I guess that would answer the question as far as violence towards me is concerned."

Did Rishi Kapoor actually beat up his wife Neetu?

Interview
Neetu Kapoor talks about herself, her family and the upside of being Rishi Kapoor's wife. Excerpts :
SOMETIME in the wee hours of November 1, the phone which rang at the Bandra police station pierced the peace of the Kapoor household. 27, Krishna Raj bungalow on Pali Hill had always been home to much activity'but the scene unfolding had for 17 years not been part of the Rishi-Neetu Kapoor "happy marriage" script.
The phone call was received by the Bandra police around 3.45 am, with the caller identifying herself as actress Neetu Singh and giving an address which matched that of the Rishi-Neetu household. The caller claimed that her husband had been beating her under the influence of liquor and that the frequency had increased. The Bandra police in turn informed the Khar police since the area came under the jurisdiction of their division.
The sub-inspector on duty was informed of the call around 3.55 am. He left for the Kapoor residence five minutes later after a short entry in the station diary about the phone call. PSI Shirsat was met at the Kapoor household by Rishi Kapoor who denied any untoward incident. Rishi also added that Neetu was fast asleep and could not be disturbed. After a preliminary enquiry, the officer left the residence with instruction that the alleged complainant Neetu Singh report to the police station during the day.
Subsequently, he filed a station diary report, with details of what transpired between him and Rishi Kapoor. Neetu did not report the entire day to the police station. The following day, the officer went to the Kapoor household and met the couple. Both Neetu and Rishi denied any such incident, with the former claiming that at the time the call was made, they were fast asleep. Since there were no apparent injury marks on the actress's face, the officer left with a request to Neetu that if she felt like making a non-cognizable complaint, she was free to do so at the police station any day.
Neetu declined the offer. Yet it has been a blot on the fair copybook of the Kapoor family. Fifty years since the establishment of the RK banner and 25 years since the release of Bobby , Rishi is in the process of filling the formidable shoes of his father as director of Akshaye Khanna-Aishwarya Rai starrer Aa Ab Laut Chalein . Already, the jumpy actor has been rattled by Bollywoood's speculation on the success'or the increasingly apparent lack of it'of his marriage. Film magazines had with repeated regularity jabbed at his expansive waistline, now he felt that they were beginning to hit below the belt. "Why should this be happening to me?" bellowed the actor to close friends soon after the story hit the fan.
To the glossies, this was the ultimate grist for their mongering quills. The candyfloss couple seemed embittered; their halo required burnishing and the cracks in the flawless make-up threatened to reveal what the gossips suspected all along.
Close friends leapt in to put out the fire and quell the heat. Shobha Kapoor, wife of actor Jeetendra, surmises: "I'm sure that it is not true. Rishi and Neetu are happily married and very content with each other. Anyway, whether it is true or not, it is very unfair to write about people's private lives, especially people who have a dignified standing in society. It upsets the family altogether and the children too." Other discrepancies were rolled off too to staunch the run of the gossip mill. "Rubbish.
The story is full of loopholes. The first item that appeared spoke of the cast of Aa Ab Laut Chalein shooting in London, when in fact, they were in America. If the obvious facts are misreported, how can the rest of the story be given credence?" questioned Rishi's public relations consultant K.S. Sanjay. But the industry's "made for each other" couple had unmade things for themselves. Over the years, the RK clan had sculptured larger-than-life images for themselves on screen while carving small niches for their women to be put in their place.
While Krishna Kapoor put up with the philanderings of her illustrious husband, Babita and Neetu were groomed to toe the family line. Expected to follow in the Kapoor tradition of hospitality and gregariousness, they had to drop their tinsel dreams for good. "The Kapoor family may be largely patriarchal but unlike the Deols, I do not think they have curbed their women in any way," observes Bharathi Pradhan, former editor, Movie and Showtime . "Both the bahus, especially Neetu, gave up their careers because they had had enough. Again, the high-profile, outgoing women in Raj Kapoor's family are different from those in Shammi Kapoor's where the women cover their heads or from Shashi Kapoor's family where the women are self-made and unconventional. Each unit respects the other while running their personal fiefdoms." Largely peace-loving, the spirited Kapoor men have always found the evening peg of Black Label irresistible.
"The last two years have been especially bad for Rishi and Neetu and this might have been the culmination of the tiffs," says an old film hand. Indeed, recent interviews in film magazines had pointed to things apart from Black Label brewing in the Rishi-Neetu home. Two months ago, Stardust ran a veiled story on Neetu's intimate friendship with Ena Sharma, Sanjay Dutt's controversial sister-in-law. This was followed by another interview in which an anguished Rishi Kapoor squarely blamed a few disgruntled families in New Jersey, America, for stubbing his marriage into shreds.
"Suddenly an upstart like Ena crops up from nowhere and stakes her claim in the relationship. Neetu was present at (Ena's sister) Richa's funeral and Ena stays with the Kapoors when in India. There is also a rumour that when Rishi was shooting in America, Neetu joined Ena in London. These stories have really upset Rishi immeasurably," says a family friend. Rishi's own reaction in Savvy was: "Which marriage doesn't go through its share of tiffs and arguments? But we are not on the verge of a divorce." For a while, Rishi's directorial venture Aa Ab Laut Chalein actually drew attention from his marital problems; till Ena and the corresponding spousal spats surfaced again. Though Rishi insisted that Ena was as much a friend of his as of Neetu's, friends feel that the industry's most exemplary marriage might face the axe. "Rishi is trying to hold the marriage together but it seems like Neetu might want out. If that happens, Krishna will have all of her three sons living in their Chembur house once again," speculates an industry wag. Which would be a pity.

Read one article about Raj Kapoor from my Uncle's old worn out copy of Stardust once which narrated an incident during RK's film Shree420, Raj fell for one lady who worked on set at the time, so aroused he was he could no longer control his sexual passion, one fine night they both made love with one unit member catching them in 'physical interlock'

Another incident concerning the family patriarch Prithviraj Kapoor in Filmfare'. Shashi Kapoor holidaying in London had a British girlfriend[one of many] His father PK decided to pay his son a visit, after meeting his son PK was then introduced to his girlfriend, Shashi's girlfriend also had her 18 year old sister along at the time, upon seeing this 18 year old PK immediately asked his son Shashi to make arrangements because he wanted to sleep with her. Shashi was disgusted turning vociferous he cursed his father
