Actress Priyanka Chopra, who journeys through the life of a woman from her 20s through 65 years of age in her next release 7 Khoon Maaf, says the film is a kind of black comedy which Bollywood has not seen in a long time.

"This is not a drama or suspense thriller. There is humour and wickedness... a black comedy not seen for a long time," Priyanka told reporters here last night.

The Vishal Bhardwaj directed film is inspired by Ruskin Bond's short story, Susanna's Seven Husbands. Priyanka described her lead character Susanna as "difficult and complicated."

"7 Khoon.. is Susanna's journey to find love. Ageing on screen was the most difficult part. I modelled my older look on the physical appearance of my mother," the 28-year-old actress said.

Priyanka said the experience of working with Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan and Annu Kapoor, who play three of her seven husbands in the movie, was "nerve wrecking".

"I had never worked with them before. Annu Kapoor is a friend of my father but I had not worked with him. I did a workshop with Naseeruddin Shah before the film went on floors.

I had to learn a lot from Irrfan as an actor," she recalled. "We shot the first schedule with Irrfan where Susanna's age is 37-40 years. I was so nervous and relied a lot on my director," she said.

The Dostana star said she was most compatible with John Abraham as she knew him well having done three films together. "I also shared good rapport with Neil Nitin Mukesh and Vivan during the shoot," she said.

To a question on initimate scenes in the film, Priyanka said the film was based on marriage. "There can be no marriage without intimacy. Love and pain come with several other emotions. I have tried to enact them to the best of my comfort."

adios, but like i said, SD didnt say she was expecting a "rom com", so i dunt get why u keep bringing that up...she said she was expecting something "lighthearted"....everything lighthearted dosent have to be a rom-com...jaane bhi do yaaron is abt politics and bureaucracy, but its considered a "black comedy"/ "satire" because it deals with serious issues in a lighthearted way...thts wht a black comedy means

SKM deals with serious stuff like "murder" and "marriage", but in a lighthearted fashion....and thts the way it was promoted...with the zingy, upbeat darrrrrling music in the background, the "im gonna drink his blood" giggle, the "every wife wanted to once kill her husband" line, a woman marrying a whopping 7 husbands and successfully managing to kill them....all point towards a sinister comedy...

comedy of any kind is considered lighthearted. so i guess thts where shobaa de's perception comes from.

She said lighthearted comedy... when they made it clear its a "dark comedy"... where did it being lighthearted come from?? And it is a rated movie.. what did she expect?? And ofcourse anyone going on a mudering spree.. wont crack akshay kumar jokes.. it would be depressing.. and its not even that depressing.. they have skipped showing literal muders in the movie.. its treatment is not that heavy given the subject.

^precicely, the treatment is not heavy, because its not meant to be...

dark comedy is also considered lighthearted....herz the definition

Black comedy is defined by dark humor that makes light of so called dark or evil elements in human nature. Similarly scatological humor, sexual humor, and race humor create comedy by violatingsocial conventions or taboos in comic ways. A comedy of manners typically takes as its subject a particular part of society (usually upper class society) and uses humor to parody or satirize the behavior and mannerisms of its members. Romantic comedy is a popular genre that depicts burgeoning romance in humorous terms, and focuses on the foibles of those who are falling in love.

source: wiki...

clearly, therz a difference between black comedy and rom-com...both meant to be lighthearted and both are "comedies" at the end of the day...but they entertain in different ways.

This is the definition of "dark comedy" or "black comedy"
dark comedy
n.
1. A comedy having gloomy or disturbing elements, especially one in which a character suffers an irreparable loss.
2. A comedy characterized by morbid or grimly satiric humor.
black comedy
Black com'e'dy (blak kom'ed'y)
n. 1. (Drama) a comedy that treats of morbid, tragic, gloomy, or grotesque situations as a major element of the plot.
it was publicized as a dark comedy.or a black comedy. but this is what miss de is saying....
"Nobody was pre-warned that the movie was dark, depressing and macabre"
sooo by just calling it a dark or black comedy... they did warn the audience.. so i dunno what shobha is talking about.

i think the reason why ppl didnt go to watch it was coz of the bad reviews and also the adult rating (its rated 18+ in australia) , which limits the bracket of audience to a large extent. It also lacked star power to pull ppl to the theatres... kaminey and omkara were dark films too, but did relatively good business because of the word of mouth and the formerly mentioned factors...

kaminey was semi hit and omkara was flop....VB doesnt have any hit films to his credit coz audience doesnt connect with his movies.....

From the first trailer of 7KM, I knew it wasn't a light-hearted fare; dont know why Shobha De thought that way. Anyhoo, I like what she had to say this time.

I didn't find her that rude here. She was actually nicer than most of the critics who reviewed 7 koon maaf!

She must have been on something when she saw the trailers for 7 khoon maaf. Other than that I think she was very unlike her usual catty self in this piece.
